My system already has Winxp, Vista and Ubuntu. I'd like to try F11 on my system with about 50 GB free space. How do I set up the installer so that it will install F11, configure the boot loader to recognize all (multiple Oss) so I can load any one of them? I know Fedora has no problem to boot winxp and Vista, but how to set things up so it can also boot other Linux OS on the same system?
View 4 RepliesI am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... I am stuck at this screen shown in the installation screenshot...I get this screen however I dont get the options back or next or its that I am unable to see this options on the screen at all and mouse gets hanged and even keyboard doesnt work...

Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...

when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...
I have given up (for now, at least) the idea of a raid solution but I will still have 2-3 hard disks available for my workstation. If I choose to reinstall from scratch,can I have essentially two different homes?

View 2 Replies View Relatedso I get my t410 today. the hdd is 250g with three primary partitions: 1) 1.17g 2) 221g win7os and 3) recovery 9.7g. I plan to install a windows vista, opensuse 11.2 and fedora 12. I know first to shrink the partition to make room. but i still don't know exactly. say, i shrink win7os partition to 40g and create an extended partition of 221-40 =181g, and then add partiton /boot, /swap, /home, /... and a number of partitons for vista and a number of similar partitions for fedora. But I doubt I wouldn't be able to install vista when opensuse installation is done.

I could not find a way to get multiple Operating systems, so I tried looking on the net a bit, and installed EasyBCD. This gave me the option of choosing the boot up OS. But when I choose Fedora in the options, the screen changes to GRUB4DOS which lists Fedora and Other as my two boot options.Selecting either one of these options results in Error 22 No partition found.

I'm facing this problem since a month on Fedora 10. I have some 45 packages for upgrade through KPackageKit which belong to KDE.
While I give it to upgrade, it gives me a strange message which says
Multiple packages exist that are not compatible with each other.
This is usually due to mixing packages from different software sources.
When I press the details button, I get these details.

I get this message only for the KDE packages. I have libkwalletbackend.so.4 in my /usr/lib directory.
I have a home network with 6+ x86_64 machines, all with similar setups. In the past (FC10 and before), I've had common package repositories (e.g /var/cache/yum/fedora/packages) shared via NFS with all the machines (and with keepcache=1 in /etc/yum.conf). That way, a given RPM only got downloaded once; the other machines would then pull it from my local package repository. And I don't mind the disk usage of keeping one copy of all my old RPMS around.
It seems that while DRPMS is great for a single machine, it doesn't make sense in my case. If I have to download the DRPM 6 times (and take the time/CPU hit to recreate the RPM 6 times), I might as well have downloaded the RPM once and been done with it. Is there a not-too-convoluted method to keep a common package repository across multiple machines even with DRPMS? Or, better, to have that first downloading machine pull a DRPM, generate the RPM, then save the RPM in the local shared repository?
I am trying to install 2 or 3 versions of linux on my hardisk of 500GB capacity.The configuration of my machine is Intel Dual Core, 4 GB Ram, 3.0 Processor Windows XP is not installed on this.I tried to use a tool called GParted but was unable to use as it was not able to bring up the XServer So I booted the machine with fedora14 installation CD and chose "Custom Layout" After reading about the partitions needed by Fedora I created 3 partitions in /dev/sda
/dev/sda1 the boot of 500MB formated as ext4
/dev/sda2 the swap of 6096MB formatted as swap
/dev/sda3 / size 150GB formatted as ext4
The installation went well and fc14 runs well on this.
However when I went to install the other linux version ....the installer was not able to recognize the unallocated space of nearly 350 GB on the hard disk.....So I am not able to create new partitions and then install the new linux on the newer partition.As a result I am unable to make use of the remaining space on the HDisk.I think I should have created /dev/sda4 /dev/sda5 etc when I installed fc14 itself....
Would appreciate some tips on how to install the other versions of Linux on this HDisk....
I quit using Fedora when FC4 came out, but I decided to switch back now that F11 has come out. I'm liking everything so far, though it is different from what I became used to (Ubuntu). My main question so far has to do with language support, and I cannot seem to find an answer anywhere for this. I need to have language support for several languages (including support to enter complex characters) for all applications for which it they are available. How do I install all the language files at once for, say, Korean, rather than installing each library one by one?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI triple boot with XP on the first partition, sidux on the second and third and Ubuntu on the fourth. sidux controls grub2. When I boot into XP or Ubuntu, my clock gets set ahead 4 hours to UTC time (I'm on Eastern daylight time).
Is there a way for all three OSs to display the right time?
What I'm trying to do at this point is setup VNC so I can remote into the system via my windows xp systems. I have VNC installed on those computer and I was able to get GNOME's remote desktop operating when I log in on level 5 and actually logged into my user account. However, when I'm not logged in on level 5 it will reject connections entirely. Ultimately I want to remote into the system using tightVNC and view the level 3 (command line only) thing, and allow me to telinit - 5 to switch to gui if I need it from VNC on the windows system. This way I don't need a monitor, keyboard and mouse plugged into the server. Right now that's what I'm having to do.
The problem is that it doesn't run in level 3 at all and level 5 (gui mode) doesn't work if i'm not logged into an account. So how can I get this to work at as a constant running server no matter what level and login point i'm at? Ultimately for this Linux admin class I have to setup a working server and I figured I'd get a base setup with VNC support that I could log into from school to work off of instead of having to use the local connection. Once I get VNC working on my network i'm pretty sure I can get it working beyond my local network.

As you can see I'm having issues with the libstdc++ lib being detected. I have it installed, but apparently not everything is setup properly. I also have an RPM file for VNC and I've tried to install it with the gnome shell but it gives me an error: "Can't install /home/[user]/Download/vnc-4_1_3-x86_linux.rpm as no transaction" I'm not sure what that means. I installing Fedora 12. I did ALL the same as in the installation guide, GRUB installed into MBR. And after installation and rebooting - nothing happens, after BIOS messages there is nothing - computer hangs. GRUB seems to be not installedI have 2 hard disks. At first I tried to install on the 2-nd drive(it is slave). Afterward I detach one disk and try with only one hard disk(it is master). Nothing changes - computer hangs.

Now I would like to keep one old kernel when I update to the new one. I had a lab rat that never got rid of old kernels and that was too much. It is possible to keep the last working kernel when you update, isn't it?

I'm a native spanish speaker, so I currently use my system in spanish, but when I see the option at log in to change the language, I'm wondering if that will change the system language as well. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 11.1 on a computer. I updated it yesterday. Now K3B, VLC, and XDVDShrink are all broken. Possibly other programs broken as well. VLC refuses to uninstall via Yast. These are high-priority programs for this computer. Multiple people use this computer for multimedia and there is not much to entertain ourselves with in our very cold climate. In other words, it is mandatory that K3B, VLC and XDVDShrink return to operational status.
Should I just upgrade to 11.3, try to fix the broken 11.1? I prefer using KDE3, not KDE4, but I can sacrifice.
On Ubuntu 10.04 when there are more than just one user logged in, if one of users logs off system hangs with a black screen.
After I reboot the machine and log in again, just after GDM login screen I get a window with a message about PowerMeter crash, with suggestion to 'cancel' and 'log off'. Only 'Log off' works, i.e. I'm successfully logged in.

- phpmyadmin installed and configured
- munin installed and configured
- mysql server with some predefined users and passwords
- same users created with existing ssh keys. also ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file with pub key inside
At the moment I use some bash script to create the users and sync the keys. Basically I need to install predefined packages and remove some other packages configure some config files (or copy working configs). I have looked at cfengine and puppet Server. And I am asking my self if this tools are overkill for this task.
I want to build a custom system and I need your opinions. I have an old laptop which I want to configure as a system for troubleshooting purpose, my idea is to have multi-boot system with multiple root file systems, e.g. one root file system has only BIND to work as DNS server, another root file system has only Samba, etc., and I can choose which system to boot into from grub, or a custom menu after booting grub.
I thought of setting multiple partitions and install a full system on each one, but I thought that there might be a better way to do this, I'd like to hear your opinions.
I need to receive a number of raw ethernet packets (say, 100 packets) into a user-mode accessible buffer large enough to hold all the packets. The way I have done this so far is by looping over the recvfrom() system call 100 times, passing an incremented pointer addressing the location in my buffer to store the packet. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with 4 harddisks and one ssd drive, presently PC boots from the 1st harddisk and other harddisks (sometimes 1, 2 or 3, depends upon the requirement) are used for the storage. Now i want to boot the PC from SSD and use the other harddisks for the storage only. My problem is that when system boots it takes 1st harddisk as sda and SSD as sdb, if i am using only one harddisk, and if i use 2 harddisk it takes sdc as SSD. So i am not able to give fix boot point in menu.lst file, if i wish to use root filesystem from SSD.I am using 2.6.33.7 kernel and grub bootloader. I have tried using initrd with udev but not able to include and start udev properly in initrd. I am trying to boot from UUID or LABEL, but no success. Am i missing something in kernel to get the UUID or LABEL.
