So I've install Ubuntu 10.04 onto my hard drive which had window vista installed first. After I've finished installing Ubuntu, i found out that there is only Ubuntu available on the GRUB and my Wiindow Vista is gone! What can I do to put or install back the Window Vista boot?

Recently, I reinstalled(recovered) Vista in my dual boot (with FC12) HP Laptop. After Vista recovery, I did not find any option to boot FC12. I tried to install grub in rescue mode from my Fedora DVD with command "$grub-install /dev/sda", but could not succeed. There was a message like 'grub-install not found in /sbin'.

Now I installed from the Live-CD and everything went fine, only problem came after the installation when I noticed GRUB didn't find windows at all.
Now I did fdisk -l and here's the result:

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a Compaq Presario V3000.
To prepare the install, I freed about 15 GB of space, booted from an USB. I chose "use largest continous free space" when it got to that point and then proceeded with the rest.
Now when I choose vista it will not load properly, here's what happens:
1.Windows says loading windows files.
2.After a while, I have to choose a language.
3.Windows looks for operating systems to repair.
If I choose not to, it will take me to a menu where I can choose to fix boot problems, command line, etc...
Linux is running very well, vista is the problem here, I have a recovery disk*, but I wanted to ask you guys if that is the correct move. I really need to keep windows to run some windows only apps.
*This disk was burnt on another computer, an HP from a friend who has the same vista edition. Will this work? This computer's burner is broken..
This is actually something for my gf, she has an account on my computer(only ubuntu on it) and uses it often (Mendley, Zotero, and sciency things in general). She loved it and asked me to install a dual boot with her win system. She use SPSS for whatever kind of statistical analysis it does and she likes ms office better then open office, and I would like to leave her with the choice....
I'm trying to change my Login window and have trouble so far I've downloaded a tar.gz with GNOME art and i cant seem to find a way to install it?

I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04/32-bit desktop on a system with a working Vista x64 installation. I had problems installing Ubuntu. I tried wubi, which didn't work at all... just booted right into Vista with no ubuntu boot option. I tried doing a full Ubuntu install, and it never gave me the "install side by side" option. Finally, I shrunk my Vistax64 boot partition to give some room for Ubuntu. Ultimately, I installed Ubuntu 10.04/32-bit desktop. I had to use the "Manully create partitions" option during installation, and created an ext4 root partition and a swap partition. The Ubuntu install worked but now I'm unable to boot into Vista x64.
After the Ubuntu 10.04 / 32-bit desktop install, the Grub2 boot loader came up. It boots into Ubuntu just fine, but when I select Vista I get a very fast blue screen, then it reboots. I tried "last known good" on the vista boot, didn't work I tried a safe mode vista boot, but get the blue screen right after it loads the "crcdisk.sys" file.
Can Ubuntu install and boot from external HD while still booting windows off internal HD?In an attempt to spread Ubuntu my friend wants to use ubuntu off an external HD and still have windows fully operational on the internal HD. View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu Lucid on my sisters laptop and it will now no longer boot into Windows Vista.
When Vista is selected, the loading bar is briefly displayed before the screen turns black and returns to GRUB.
EDIT : More specifically, first a long bar is displayed at the bottom of the screen that says something like 'loading windows files' above it. Then the standard vista loading bar, with (c) microsoft under it. Then I get an hourglass pointer and a message "please wait a moment" in the centre of the screen. After a few seconds, the screen then goes black and the computer reboots.
I used a live CD to install Ubuntu and I chose the default automatic option for the dual boot partitioning. All the data on Windows can be accessed from Ubuntu, it just will not boot.

i'm trying to make my imac capable of triple boot.the software i use are:
mac os x 10.5.8
win vista sp1
linux opensuse 11.2

Been trying this by the guess and error method for days.I know about the "Swerdna" post but it is way to difficult for me.I do this every other output from Microsoft, so it is very difficult to rememberwhat transpired. Bedsides it changes with each new distro.I'm tempted to use the VM program that Dedoimodo recommended but I don't knowhow it handles Email and urls. If they are permanent or not.
Setup:
HD1 - Vista - sda
HD2 - Opensuse 11.2 - No boot to MBR - sdb

When I installed it, I used lvm to parition my hard drive and just let it do its thing. It shrunk my windows partition to 150 GB of 250 GB. I assumed it would let me dual boot just like ubuntu let me do but when I booted. It only gave me two options Desktop -- OpenSUSE 11.3 and failsafe -- opensuse 11.3. Those are also the two options it gives me when I look at the boot loader settings. Did I delete my Windows parition or did I just forget to specify to allow for a dual boot and how can i fix this so I can dual boot

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've never tried installing any other operating system on my desktop so I'm not sure if it's a 9.10 bug (probably not), but whenever I choose any of the options after the ubuntu cd has been loaded at startup it goes to a black screen with the underscore at the top, and promptly reboots. At this point in time I can just boot back into windows or get to the same selection screen off of the cd.I've tried burning 3 seperate cd's and at the moment and trying to boot them on my laptop (but not working... hrm). I'm thinking about redownloading the iso in a couple minutes.

Thing is, grub didn't install! I'm pretty sure a full install of ubuntu 10.10 in on a partition that I can't access. To complicate matters further, loading Vista necessitated a restart when it installed a "generic volume driver" by itself. Restarting vista doesn't show any difference (obviously since vista can't see linux formatted partitions).

View 2 Replies View RelatedK well i was trying to remove some partition since ubuntu took a lot of space so i messed around with ubintu until i found some partition editor. i went in system>Administrator>disk utility then i selected my 320 gb hard disk and deleted partitions (i didnt know what i was deleting them from). i restarted my computer and clicked on my vista on boot menu but i got an error which ive forgoten it was something like no disk. after that i clicked on ubuntu recovery and did update grub, then clicked on repair something (i forgot) it took like 30 minutes to repair but after that my vista dissapeared now i have 2 different linux in my boot menu. 1 is a linux 19 the other is a linux 22.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI wanted to start exploring web development and perhaps hosting my own server as well as learning about linux and all the things that go with it so I downloaded the ubuntu 9.1 Server edition and burned it to a CD. I thought to put it on my Dell laptop as it is newer than my main PC and I could bring it to and fro between class. It had Vista installed and I definitely wanted to keep that in the meantime until I got more familiar with Ubuntu. The laptop has a 320GB hard drive with a 10 GB recovery partition. I went ahead and formatted the 10GB to make room for ubuntu. Also I was able to "shrink" the main windows partition by 16GB to make even more room. I could not combine the two small drives but alas. I had hoped to use the 16GB partition for the main install and the 10GB for a necessary swap drive (I am completely new to all this).
So I reboot on the server CD and get to the partition section. I was following this guide here: [url]
It seemed I did not want to do anything "guided" or "automatic" because the options were listing the entire drive and again i wanted to keep my vista untouched. So I go to manual partitioning and although the guide didn't go into enough detail I went ahead and assigned an "ext2" filetype to the larger partition and a "swap" to the smaller partition. Then I went to write changes to disk and after completing one of the two successfully the installer failed to configure the swap drive. I don't know why. I restarted to make sure windows was OK and surely it was not, as I got the dreaded "missing operating system" screen. I ran the windows recovery CD and lo and behold it could not find any drives at all, much less repair them. The data I had on the vista partition were not particularly vital, but it would be nice to have it back.
So my questions are, is there a way to recovery the windows partition? And how is the correct way to configure a dual boot system with Vista and Ubuntu 9.1 Server edition?
I'm stuck with installing Fedora Core I have 2 hard drives both 80Gb I want to install a fresh copy on one of the drives to do a dual boot I have vista on the main hard drive this is where I am at Installation requires partitioning of your hard drive by default, a partitioning layout is chosen which is reasonable for most users. You can either choose to use this or create your owe. Select the drive to use for this installation?
