Mar 23, 2011I am not sure where to post this so move please if its the wrong place. A few weeks ago i decided to try out Ubuntu, so I installed it as a dual boot, along with Windows 7. Now i have decided to switch fully to Ubuntu, so I have formatted the windows partition. Now however i am not sure how to allocated the unallocated space and expand the Ubuntu partition. Is even possible?

Feb 24, 2010I successfully before install Ubuntu on my last laptop along with windows vista and it was rather easy because ubuntu allowed me to partition the disk so simply. However, on my vaio, my whole hard disk is partition and there is no unallocated space. It will not allow me to partition the disk and when I boot up the ubuntu live cd to install, the partitioner doesn't look the same and I'm hesitant to make any changes because I'm afraid I'm going to damage my data. I have a 500GB HDD in which I want to use just 60GB for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows 7. Also, I'm running 64-bit Windows if that matters at all.

Jan 4, 2010I recently installed Bio-Linux 5.0 as a dual boot system with XP for some bioinformatics applications, but Im having some problems with the amount of disk space which can be allocated specifically for the Ubuntu install.
I partitioned a 250 GB portable hard drive into:
/dev/sdb1: 154.76 GiB (with 30 GiB allocated for Ubuntu)
/dev/sdb2 : 78.13 GiB
Ive been using blastclust to analyse some very large data sets, which keeps on crashing due to filesystem running out of disk space.
When I installed Bio-Linux 5.0 from the live cd, the maximum size I could allocate to the install was 30 GiB, and I havent been able to find a way to change this.
Ive tried using System->Administration->Partition Editor using the live cd, and can view / delete the partitions, but I cant find a way to specifically alter the disk space allocation for Ubuntu.
How do I increase the filesystem size to larger than the current 30 GiB?

Mar 20, 2010my home partition is an extended one, and when i want to create an unallocated space the space will stay in that extended partition. but there is also an 7 gb unallocated space which i want to merge with the other unallocated space. I also cannot extend that partition over that 7 gb. how can i overcome that problem?

Nov 25, 2010I am using fedora 12. I got "no space in root directory" warning from the system. When I went through it, I found many of the space has been occupied by /var/log/httpd/error-log file. So I just deleted the file but when I check the space with "df -h" command. It shows 0% availability. The same problem occurred before but it solved when I restarted the system. But how to regain the space without restarting the system?

Jun 12, 2010I have an external 800GB USB drive I used for storage for both files from Win XP and Suse 9.0.I can read and write my data from Win XP o.k but when I try to write any files from Suse side it gave me 'read only file system' . This drive from Unix is mounted in /media directory with root owner with executable and read only. When I changed to become root and issue chmod 777 'FreeAgent Drive'.I got error chmod: changing permissions of 'FreeAgent Drive':Read only file system.
From unix, reading any file on this drive, using gui application, I can not access the drive at all but I can see all files on the drive using a command with quote (cd /media/'FreeAgent Drive')
Fedora :: Create A New Partition In Unused LVM Space
Jan 10, 2010I just installed Fedora 12 in a laptop with a big hard drive and used LVM for it. The thing is that I used just a fraction of the LVM total size to create the "/" partition and decided to leave the task of creating the other partition (the data partition) with the rest of the LVM space after F12 got installed. Unfortunately I found that Gparted is apparently unable to perform that task of creating a new partition in unallocated LVM space. Is there any way I can create a new partititon in that unused LVM space?

Nov 8, 2010I'm trying to run preupgrade to upgrade to fedora 14 from fedora 12 and get a message saying there is not enough space in /boot/upgrade. I've found some instructions on how to make more room in the boot directory but I get an error near the last step as I have noted below:
Method 1: Free up space
First, try to remove any kernel packages not currently in use on your system. The kernel-prune.py script can be used to identify kernels that may be safely removed. If you choose to remove additional kernels, be prepared with installation media should you be unable to return to your previously installed system.
The installer will need approximately 26M of free space in /boot. Use the following command to determine the amount of free space in the /boot partition:
df -h /boot
To identify kernels that may be safely removed, run the following from a command line:
curl -O '[URL]'
chmod a+x kernel-prune.py
./kernel-prune.py
Now, to actually remove the kernel versions listed by the above command, run the following as root:
# PKGS=`./kernel-prune.py`
# echo $PKGS
# yum remove $PKGS
Next, adjust the number of reserved filesystem blocks using the command tune2fs. You'll first need to identify the block device for your /boot file system. In the example below, /dev/sda1 is the block device for the /boot filesystem.
# mount | grep "/boot"
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext4 (rw)
I get this far and get the following Error:
[root@localhost ~]# mount | grep "/boot"
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)
[root@localhost ~]# /dev/sda1 on /boot tupe ext3 (rw)

Now, adjust the number of reserved blocks for the /boot filesystem using the command tune2fs. Normally, a small amount of space on ext filesystem formatted partitions is 'reserved' and can only be used by the system administrator; this is to prevent an entirely full partition from rendering a system unbootable, and allow the administrator some space in which to work in order to clean up 'full' partitions. However, neither of this cases really applies to the /boot filesystem, so removing this reserved space is safe.
# tune2fs -r 0 /dev/sda1

Fedora Installation :: Unable To Create Partition - Not Enough Free Space
May 17, 2010I just downloaded the new fedora and proceed to install it into a free space of 11GB on my HDD. As such the partitioner is unable to create more than 1 partitioneven if free space is available, it reports not enough free space seen if its present. As such it can create only one of the three partitions i.e., swap or / or /home duw to which cannot proceed ahead.' Some more details me running Xp as the other OS on my system.

Aug 7, 2011Two nights ago I installed the KDE Spin of F15 and it all went smoothly. Then, I decided to try and use Windows' bootloader (it was a dual-boot) instead of GRUB. So I booted into Windows, spun up EasyBCD, added the correct entry for Fedora, and overwrote the MBR. I rebooted and tried to boot into Fedora, only to realize that the Windows Boot Manager had a failsafe that sensed when it didn't boot into Windows, and it stopped me from booting into Fedora.
At first, I booted into my live USB and tried to get GRUB back. After a couple Konsoles full of GRUB telling me that it couldn't mount the drive and install itself, I decided I was probably doing something wrong and it would be much easier to just reinstall Fedora.
I deleted the Fedora partitions I had made earlier from Windows (because it was already running). Then I booted into my live USB and tried to install Fedora. I clicked "OK" to make a partition (that would mount at /boot) that was 500 mb. It told me there wasn't enough space, but sitting right next to one of the already installed partitions was more than 190000 mb of space. So I tried to redo the partition with 250 mb, then I tried to make the swap partition and the main one (that would mount at /). I kept getting the error. I decided maybe it was a problem with the USB, so I rebooted into Windows and reinstalled the ISO onto the USB (with unetbootin) and repeated the process, only to get the same error.
P.S- I tried to use the option to "Use Free Space" as well as doing it manually and got the same error. Also, I saw another thread where a person with my same type of compute (a Lenovo Y560) had a similar problem. It might be possible there's a hidden partition for Lenovo's purposes? Anyways, the other user's solution was to move the an extended partition somewhere. I'll be posting an fdisk soon, in case I have the same problem as the other user. The other user used GParted, but it looks like I can use Easeus too, which I already have installed.

Aug 14, 2009I got a new computer (core i7, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd).I first installed Windows 7, because I remembered how Fedora 9 created a dual-boot screen nicely, while if I installed XP on a system with Fedora 9 it would just take over the boot and boot to XP.Anyway, so Windows 7 is installed, and I got the Fedora 11 DVD install.I partitioned the hdd as thus (on win7 installation): 93gb windows system, 300gb media partition, 90gb unformatted.When I boot the installation and select the "use free space" I get an error that there isn't enough free space on the disks to create the layout.I also tried to create a custom layout, but after a few errors I gave up on that what should I do to get Fedora 11 installed?

Feb 7, 2010I am implementing a strategy to organize my data among the several machines I work with and thought that getting some ISO images out of it could be a good idea because that way data would be 'read only' thus allowing for easier synchronization.
At first I thought of using the "dd" command to create the ISO out of a directory, but it fails code...
So, I have two questions:
Is the ISO 'format' capable of storing complex directory structures with long filenames (pretty much as any Linux filesystem does), or are there some inherent limitations?
Supposing the ISO format is not constrained, which command would allow me to create an ISO file out of a directory?

I am trying to add new users, when I use the command: # useradd newuser
I get: useradd: cannot create directory /home/users/newuser
I went to my /etc/skel and when I use the command ls it displays:
home
and when I go into /etc/skel/home I have the two directories that I created.
I am logged in as root, and when I ls cd / it shows /home, when I cd into /home everything looks normal.
How do I get this error to stop so I can add new users?

Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".

I have a total of 80GB Hard disk.Out of 80 GB,I have freed 8GB for Linux.But during Installation after "selecting language for keyboard" and then choosing "Create Custom Layout", while giving partitions I have alotted 4GB for '/' and 2GB for Swap.
Initially space was created for root(/)...but it is unable to create space for swap and all other boot,home etc...
It is showing the error msg as "Could not create partition as there is no space left for /(root)"...

I want to set a quota on each domain folder. The quota sizes will vary per folder. Is there a way to do this without creating a user for every domain?
