Fedora :: Disable Apic In Grub?
May 28, 2010
Can somebody tell me how to disable apic in the grub? I've already edited the grub text file and added "noapic" in the kernel line. Now is there something similar to "sudo update-grub" that I have to run (I ask because it's not saving when I reboot)? I know in ubuntu you have to run that command in order for the changes to the text file to take place in the grub. Is there a command similar to that for Fedora?

A friend of mine has a problem on Karmic - he cant get past the screen just after the select the OS screen(grub screen) it says something about apic, but when he puts in the live CD, and presses F6 and selects expert and checks "no Apic" his computer boots.
MY question - is there a way to get into the installed ubuntu on the HDD) to set the no apic so that he can boot from the installed distro.

I'm trying to install Fedora 11 on a Dell Latitude c810 (PIII 1ghz, 256mb ram, GeForce2 GO)
When trying to boot from the Live CD it goes to the first fedora boot screen where it counts down from 10 then tries to boot.
It then says "IO Apic resources could not be allocated" then moves onto a fedora loading bar which completes... but the next screen is completely black, I've tried letting it stay there for 10 or so minutes but nothing happens.

I was able to copy the iso file and tried the installation however I stubbled upon the same problem I had when I tried installing Fedora 11. The message I received was "(1) (0.048001) MP-BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC (2) (0.064001) Kernel panic-not syncing:IO-APIC + timer doesn't work Book with apic debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'no apic-option'.

I fed the kernel commands, noapic , noioapic but that didn't work .

The "MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC" error message shows up on boot on at least one of my RHEL servers, and I'm not quite sure what to make of it. My understanding of the situation is that the timer is located elsewhere on the motherboard than where the kernel looks for it. Is this correct?
I've come across people suggestin one should disable APIC by adding "noapic" to the kernel boot options, but which consequences does this imply - in SNP setups only one CPU will be used by the kernel?

I have some virtual machines running with CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) and everything works as expected. To test a possible upgrade I took one of then and did yum clean all yum update after rebooting I get a kernel panic with the following message:
MP BIOS BUG : 8254 timer not connected to APIC IO I know that I can change the boot command not to use APIC and after that the machine boots again but I doubt that there has been any change to the virtual APIC implementation during the upgrade of the OS. Is there anything that iI should exclude from upgrading while working in a vm? I use VMWare Player 2.5.3 build-185404 on a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04 as host.

After searching other similar posts I have not found an answer. I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.4.1 after reformatting the computer from the previous Ubuntu Edgy. When rebooting get this msg (in title). I used the live CD to get into the grub files to see if I could ad 'noacip' option. But was looking for 'menu lst' file and found none. Currently when I boot I don't get any menu list and therefore no options at the bottom. Should be an easy problem to resolve Powerspec B364/160gb/856Ram/ATI raedon 200 express onboard/Geforce 8400GS PCI-e

I've just reinstalled 10.04 LTS, after my update from 9.10 to 10.04 made some weird errors. So everything is good now, the problems before were fixed by the reinstall.By the reinstall, grub2 were installed aswell. Before, I ran grub1 (I guess) and at bootup it didnt show the list of boot choices you have, like safe boot or other OS if you have multi boot. It just booted up and I could press ESC if I wanted the menu. That disapperead after I installed grub2, so how do I get this function back, I kinda liked it.
One more question, after the reinstall I setup the taskbar and by mistake I remove the sound control. How do I get this back, it's not in the "Add to panel" when I right click on the taskbar.

I have two linux boxes A and B. Each of them have serial ports (ttyS0 on both) and these ports are connected using null modem serial cable. "A" box is always on and it has getty process on its ttyS0 (I need this getty for serial communication). If I reboot box B, it doesn't boot default entry - just displays grub os select table. After some investigation I realized that getty process on A sends some data to grub on B while it's booting and grub behaves the same way as if some key is pressed during timeout period - it doesn't boot default and waits for interactive user response. I need to reboot B remotely so its no good for me.

I'm trying to prevent users from accessing the grub menu, but setting the timeout to 0 doesn't cut it because a user can hold down ESC during boot.At the moment, it seems that my only option is to set a password for grub. But I was hopping that there is a better way where I can disable that feature completely.

I've found that my USB mouse causes some I/O bug BIOS, but in operation system it works fine. Problem is freezing GRUB caused by fake input from the mouse. Possible decision is disabling any input for grub, but I don't know how to do it.

I just started using linux (newb) on a dual boot with windows VISTA. I need to disable data prevention execution whenever I do boot Vista through GRUB but I don't know what command to use nor exactly where to put the command. On a single boot windows machine, all you would do is type the following at the command prompt and reboot: bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOffAlso, GRUB lists my VISTA boot option simply as "other." Is there a way to change that?

Just wanted to share this with anyone wanting to know.If your headless server crashes, GRUB2 (at least on Ubuntu Server) is designed to force the GRUB menu to load up next time it starts up, which means you are locked out of SSH until someone physically makes a kernel selection on the PC.To prevent this do the following change to your grub.cfg file.#nano /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I was looking for a solution for this for a long time and found no hel with google. Let me know if there is a better way.I aware this file will get overwritten and need reediting if the Kernel gets updated.

since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file

I created a new partition in Windows Vista which, after rebooting, screwed up Grub. I believe that I need to reinstall Grub and everything should be fine, and I remember reading the command to do this on this forum, but I can't find it. When I boot, I now get a black screen with white letters instead of the Grub boot menu. It says something about "Minimal Grub" at the top and gives me a prompt that looks like this.
grub>
I can boot the live CD and I have internet access with it, but I can not remember the terminal command to repair Grub. Can someone tell me this command?

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)
so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)
completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27
[Code]...

I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?

Code:
grub-install -v
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)
I loaded GRUB, and now when I reboot it goes straight into the 'grub>' command line. Initially GRUB had the root as (hd0,2), whereas the boot is on (hd0,1)...(hd0,2) is my '/home' partition, and (hd0,1) is my '/' partition... So on a bootup I ran...
Code:
root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)
Now when I boot I still get the 'grub>' command line, but now the root is correct.
From 'grub>' I can type...
Code:
grub> configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst
GRUB will then show the menu, and I can click the listings to load them. All's fine, but why doesn't GRUB just load the menu.lst without my prompting? How can I automate this process of typing 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' each time I boot?
