Ive always had luck doing any kind of updates to my system. I let it auto install the security updates lastnight. Today when I rebooted the machine it just hangs. I would like to attempt to boot only to a command prompt so that I can atleast use vi to edit files and fix the system. Do I have to edit grub to do this or is there keys I can press during boot up?
View 5 RepliesSo i have a fresh install of the server edition of Karmic, i'm running the Xfce desktop. When I attempt to manage users and groups through the GUI, I am prompted for what I think is the root password, the reason I say this is because the account I am currently logged in has sudo privileges and it does not accept that password at all, but I read that by default the root account is 'locked,' (to be honest it was so long ago since I last installed Ubuntu I completely forgot if it is or isn't, my current desktop installation has su access) is it asking for the root password? why doesn't my current user account password work if the root account is 'locked'? I can perform all other administrative tasks with sudo no problem.
the funny thing is, I have the exact same setup in a virtual machine, the same problem happens, except for some strange reason after changing the password on the only account (besides root), the password required to administer users and groups stayed the same after the change. (at the time of installation I just put both the user and root password the same and now that it is setup), i'm now ready to change the passwords. except now I read that the root account is locked by default, but this strange problem occurs.
I know there is a way to do this... What do I need to install to give me this option from the login screen?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Maverick Studio on a new hard drive, and am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE GPU. If I boot into the 2.6.35-22-generic kernel, everything runs fine, but if I try to boot into either the 2.6.35-20-Low Latency, or 2.6.33-29-Realtime kernels (installed from Synaptic), the computer boots straight to a command prompt instead of the desktop. Does anybody know what causes this? I need to be able to use one of these kernels for doing music production.
View 1 Replies View Related2nd and 3rd might be linux kernel problems but may help someone else so I included here.1st -- run level 4, /etc/rc.d/rc.4 and xdm -nodaemonJust installed 13.1 on an odd system, including building a new kernel.One thing I do is have the system boot to a command prompt and then run /etc/rc.d/rc.4 to start XBut I found that the rc.4 uses xdm -nodaemon flag and it was causing problems so I removed and all is pretty good. I still see some odd behavior with the virtual ttys sometimes.2nd -- when building a new kernel, I found I need the device-mapper butcouldn't tell if that was a linux kernel issue or something to do with lilo, I didn't want and don't need multiple disk devices like for LVM or MD so I didn't plan to have this enabled.3rd -- CONFIG_EXT4_USE_FOR_EXT23 When that kernel config option was selected and I have only an EXT4 filesystem, the filesystem was mounted as an EXT2, even though the kernel had no EXT2 feature. /etc/fstab specified EXT4 but the mount command showed EXT2. A silent problem that could leave an unpleasant surprise since EXT2 hos no journaling.4th -- I had to run lilo -C by hand in a virtual tty before finishing the install. This was what I had to do when installing 13.0 on different hardware. It seems that the lilo part of the install needs some sorting out.

I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was deleting some space off my C Drive and I believe I may of accidentally deleted Fedora, or some of it! I have a dual boot with Fedora and Windows XP so when I started my desktop up it would load into fedora by default or I could press a key to load XP! (It rhymes!) Now, however, it instantly loads up into "Grub"
And that's it! Run, Or Exit, or anything really, doesn't work! Except Reboot! So I'm a little stuck. It's an old PC and the Windows XP disc is long gone, if I ever had one! I had this thought that perhaps if I reinstall Fedora from a CD it many bring back the old command prompt and let me get back into XP again? Or, is that crazy talk??

I'm trying to install F11 in my new laptop [URL] and I'm unfortunately about to give up, but I want to give this option. What I want to do is use the live cd (on a usb stick) to boot on a text-only session. Supposedly the way to do that is type "linux text" on the boot prompt but the problem is that I can't even get there. After booting I get the grub menu with two options: boot, and verify and boot. Hitting esc doesn't bring me to the boot prompt. I can get to the grub menu, but I'm not sure what to do from there. And I can edit the boot and kernel options, but I'm not sure whether that will allow me to log in a text-only session.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have set up a user to login remotely to our Red Hat 5 server via SSH. A rule in our department firewall enables this user to login from a single static ip address. The ssh port on our server is 22. I am able to login to port 22 from locations within our department firewall. Our administrator says the firewall configuration is unchanged. The remote user had been successful logging in. But now the remote user gets a Connection Timed Out message, before being asked to authenticate by the server.
I regenerated security keys, but the remote user still gets the connection timed out message. (I can login locally with the new keys). I suspect either a firewall or an authentication problem--inclining a firewall problem. Am I correct? Is there a Linux command to check whether port 22 is available or blocked, prior even to authentication, for login from the user's remote location?
i could manage to install fedora 12 on my laptop (asus f6a) using the iommu=off option, but when i try to boot it i just reboot without even seeing the fedora logo, i just see the the prompt for 5 seconds and then it reboots.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy FC12 laptop won't boot. During the attempted boot, after blue/white progress bars finish displaying on the bottom of screen, nothing more seems to happen. The screen isn't totally blank in that I seem to have a text cursor and keyboard input is displayed. But, no prompt, no login prompt, X isn't running, etc. If I hit ESCduring boot, it displays the boot messages and the boot sequence stops after "Starting atd". I'm not sure if it's related, but I had previously experimented with creating a new xorg.conf file by running "Xorg -configure' and was testing the new file with "X -?? /etc/x11/xorg.conf.new" (I forget what the -?? option was). I assumed that this would not overwrite the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and that if I ran into problems, that the original xorg.conf would be in place. how I can get this miserable thing to boot?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIt disappears too fast! I'm using the netinstall spin of the Fedora 13 x64 disk. As far as I know, I still need to tell it to load Anaconda from the network. Is that correct? Anaconda loads from the CD, but I would prefer to use the downloaded image. Should I just let Anaconda go through its paces then tell it where I downloaded the image to on my network?
The documentation is woefully inadequate when it comes to using the netinst spin (yes, I am already thinking about providing help on the install docs based upon my experiences).
Can't boot at all. At first, was able to boot using LiveCD USB but now whether I plug it or not, computer freezes at blank screen with blinking cursor at the top left of the screen.

There is no network connectivity so the client can only be loaded with Linux from CD or DVD media. The crux of the matter is that I can not automatically install the Linux software on client WITHOUT typing linux ks=cdrom:/ks.cfg at the boot prompt.
I want to avoid any user prompts and just have the software install with the RPMS that I need for this client pc at the boot prompt. Actually, when the boot prompt commences, I would like the software install to start with no user intervention. I've tried several different methods in isolinux.cfg, but the OS always wants boot prompt for the cdrom. Can the boot prompt information be read automatically from the isolinux.cfg with out user intervention? I'm looking for the same behavior as a LIVE CD that kicks off with no boot prompts after a few seconds. Here's a copy of my isolinux.cfg

My buddy has a computer with a problem and hes asked me to see if I can retrieve the data documents from the computer. The subject computer is a COMPAQ PRESARIO SR5030NX with a Pentium 4 cpu, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB RAM, running Windows Vista Home Basic.
His goal was to create a dual boot computer UBUNTU and Vista. What he did was to install UBUNTU, partitioning the computer in two partitions. The computer is now giving an error code of 21 when GRUB Loader starts up. Is there a restore disk or some kind of utility that can undo what was done to the computer. He has no backup disk.
I tried Recovery Commander Ver. 3 made by Avanquest but as their website indicates it�s for XP. They never updated it for Vista and Windows 7. Is there a utility that can undo some of the changes that were made to the machine when UBUNTU was installed, albeit, unsuccessfully.
(1) I have an HP PC running XP professional and I was wondering if I take the hard drive out from the COMPAQ and rig it to my HP via a SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter device would I be able to see the contents of that COMPAQ computer that had Vista and now UBUNTU.
(2)What about attaching the COMPAQ internal hard drive and attaching it to my HP as a slave drive.
(3)Can the UBUNTU disk going to help?

I was attempting dual boot my computer (ubuntu 11.04 and windows 7) and when I got to the stage to allocate drive space I accidentally formatted the largest partition of my hard drive to a linux swap. My computer froze while it was formatting the drive and I was forced to power off my laptop. Windows was my original operating system and was installed on the partition that is now formatted (or maybe not because of the crash during the formatting) as a linux swap. Therefore my windows no longer works and I cannot restore my computer for a backup because it wont let me restore it to the partition that is now a linux swap. Now when I boot from the linux install cd I get an error and am not able to install ubuntu or format/allocate drive space. Is there a way I can reformat and fix my harddrive so I can them restore windows.
