i am installing onto a serperate partition so that one is windows and the other is linux. im in the meddle of creating it right now but im stuck on the mount point. were should the mount point be? also should file system type be ext4? and under additional size options should it be fixed size, fill all space up to______, or fill to maximum allowable size?

At the end of the disk, I have specified a partition as ext3 104855 MB (sda9) and swap 8192 MB (sda. What should the the mount point of sda9 be? Should I specify a partition for /, /boot, /home, /tmp, ...etc? Or it is ok to make mount point '/'?

Last night I let the automatic updating of packages ran on my Fedora 10 installation. It has been a few months since I ran the updating and so it took quite long. I did not monitor it closely so I am not sure which packages were updated. After the update was completed, when I restarted my computer it halted during the boot up process at the point when it was trying to mount the root file system. The error message is "mount: missing mount point".
I booted the computer using the F10 DVD and used the rescue mode to look into the /boot directory. The kernel that was booting by default was 2.6.27.25-170.2.72.fc10.x86_64.There were two older F10 kernels in /boot and so I tried booting with them. The boot process went further but I was still not able to boot up F10 successfully. There were many error messages about not being able to touch files in /var/lock/subsys as it is a read-only file system.
I'm just setting up a partition on a seperate HDD in my system. I plan to use the partition to backup the important files on my main HDD (to guard against HD crash).
The question I have is about where would be the typical location to auto mount this partition? Which would it be normal to go for:
1. /backup/
2. /media/backup/
3. /mnt/backup/
4. /home/chris/backup/
I have a Pc with 2 hard drive, yesterday I installed ubuntu lucid but I forgot to set a mount point (let's say /datas) during partitioning, and now I have the hard drive icon on my Desktop. I would like to set the mount point during boot, what I can I do? Insert a fstab line? If I do that, the desktop icon si still there, so, what does ubuntu do when I configure a mount point on a secon har drive during installation?!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to mount /NFS as nfs mountpoint on two servers ( A & B ) having OS OEL 5. After mounting the nfs filesystem, both of them behave normally for around 10 mins and after that the NFS file handle become stale and the mountpoints dont respond. While executing df -kh, the output hang out and the /var/log/messages show the following message:

i do so, then i get an error message from ubuntu saying that it failed to fetch several packages from the disc listed above.
when i check the mount point of the /cdrom/ it has now been changed to media/apt/ so i'm guessing synaptic is looking for media/cdrom/ but cannot find it. how do i get it to stop changing the name of the mount point and why is it doing this? could it have something to do with my modem? as i have noticed that for the first time since i have been using ubuntu (since ver 7.10, 8.04, 9.04) ubuntu 10.04 is listing my modem huawei e220 (usb hsdpa modem) as a disc drive.
I'm installing Ubuntu 11.04 beta and partitioning into 3 parts. One for root, one for home, and one for swap.In the partitioning utility you can go into during installation (at the beginning of installation actually) there is a drop down box for selecting the mount point of the partition. I'm good on the first two but am not sure what to select for swap. I'm searching on the Internet too but am not seeing what I need right off.

This works just fine for Fedora 14 but on Fedora 15 the mount point disappears on reboot ie there is no /media/a500 folder. a500 appears under devices in Nautilus and mtpfs is ok as I can mount the device via the command line by creating the mount point setting ownership and running

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am installing 11.04 on a test PC. My standard drive layout, developed over many years and many distros is as follows:
sda1 /
sda2 /home
sda3 swap
sda4 /data
/ and /home are relatively small. I put most data files on /data to facilitate hot backup of important data to another drive or machine.
/ and /home are periodically cold backed up with g4l. That said...I noticed that the install partitioner in 11.04 only allows me to select from a list of mount points. / home var etc. I can not type in a mount point of my liking as I have done since I started using Ubuntu about 6.4.Is this Canonical's idea of an improvement?Yes I can manually format the /data partition after install and add it to /etc/fstab. Still I would give Canonical three thumbs down on this enhancement.
p.s. The above seems to be a moot point as the installer refuses to install the boot loader. I have filed a bug report. It makes no difference if I partition the disk manually or allow the installer to partition it to its defaults. If it ain't broke, break it.
I encrypted my /home partition in my last installation F13. For some reason, I have to reinstall F13. After I login, I can not access /home. I followed some instructions like

I have set up an encrypted ext4 partition on a new external USB HDD. When I plug it in, some sequence of a daemons and scripts cheerfully puts up a dialog to ask me for my pass phrase and then creates a mount point and mounts the drive in /media. I'd like to know how to configure this process to change the name of the mount point (right now it's an unwieldy hex string), it's permissions and ownership. I'm sure this is straightforward, but I just don't what the relevant programs and files are.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just been gifted with a Linux dedicated server for the next six months, with an option to renew after that time has expired, and I'd like to set it up for FTP/P2P use. I do have some familiarity with Fedora from work, but only as a pre-installed desktop OS. The company providing the server has asked me to choose a OS, so of course I picked the one with which I already have some knowledge. They've also asked me to provide partition and mount point information, and it's here that I'm having some problems. I've spent most of my free time today reading everything I could about partitioning for a server, and I'm still not comfortable making this decision on my own.
The server comes with two drives - one 500GB and one 1TB, and 8GB RAM. My thinking is to use the 500GB drive for the OS, and the 1TB for media storage. I know I still have a good bit of learning to do, but I just want to get the blasted thing set up so I can get on with the hands-on part of figuring out how it works.
I have 9.10 installed and working like a charm, due to the problems I had last time, I decided to leave an empty space to try and test upcoming editions, but I can't install it!
I get two error messages and can't get past the point of partition assignment.

I am having problems with grub. Originally I was having trouble installing Service Pack 2 for vista and I made the fool's mistake of changing the active partition in disk management from the boot partition to the windows partition. This blew up grub. After restarting I was dumped at the grub terminal i.e.
grub>
so I thought okay, I will just reinstall grub. I ran setup (hdx,y) but now when I restart first of all the splash screen is different, rather then the blue background with the big words in white, fedora 11, it's black and I get a error saying unable to read any images. I can see the different OS' I have on the grub screen but attempting to load any of them gives me
error 17 cannot mount selected partition.
I am currently running the Fedora 11 xfce spin live cd. From the terminal here, here is some information. sda3 is my fedora 11 partition I am not sure maybe it is because of ext4 but I can't seem to mount it using mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/xxxxx.

When I attach my ipod it gets automatically recognised and mounted to "/media/user's ipod". This is great but I would like to change the mount point to just "/media/ipod/" as it easier to use with gnupod (command driven ipod access oh yes!!) I've had a look around and I know how to mount devices but I'm at a lose as to how things in fedora are automatically mounted... I use gnome so from what I've read hal, dbus, and udev yeah? but I'm not sure what configuration files need to be changed. At the moment I'm just wanting to change the ipods mount point but I would like know more so any technical how-to or articles, or things to look at (I'm thinking X), to understand auto mounting would be nice too.

First, installed Ubuntu 10.4 on the entire disk (40GiB of size). Then, shrink the Ubuntu installation to equal size to free up space for fedora.

Gateway m275 laptop with builtin smartcard reader. I've done modeprobe - <mmc module of all types> after having removed modprobe.conf file. I see that there is a pcmcia rules, Do I add all modules to this list so hat it can be probed. Once pccardctl is working, how do I find the volume and mountit or set fstab to create the mount point or to have it automatically mounted in media.

A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:
--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition
B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)
C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector
D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:
1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'
Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.
Symptom:

* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.
How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).
On SUSE 11.2 when a CD or DVD is automounted (in the /media directory) it appears that the mount point chosen for the disk always has extra blanks at the end of the mount.
For example, if the label on the CD was DISK-001, the mount point chosen by SUSE is
/media/DISK-001 /
In 11.1 (and earlier) the mount point would have been
/media/DISK-001/
I'm assuming that the trailing blanks are filling in unused or blank chars at the end of the CD label.
Is there any way to change this annoying behavior? I much prefer NOT to have trailing blanks in the mount point.
I have servers installed with RHEL 4 2.6.9-89.0.9 ELsmp. I tried using uuid and label in /etc/fstab to automount usb drives to mountpoints that I specify after reboot. Unfortunately, it just does not work in all my RHEL4 servers. After every reboot, /etc/fstab will be automatically modified and all configurations related to my USB drives will be changed. Irregardless of whether i use UUID or LABEL in my /etc/fstab.However, it works on RHEL5. But, upgrading is not an option in my environment. I have been googling around looking for alternatives but everything seems to point back to using UUID or LABEL in /etc/fstab. Anyone has tried something that works? Please help me, thank you.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have tried to install Debian from various .iso files over the last couple of days. However, the installations always get stuck on "Partition disks" section. On the screen, the progress bar for "Starting up the partitioner" keep getting stuck at 50%, and refuses to progress further. I understand that it might take a little time to scan the hard drive, so as an experiment, I left it on over night. However, it is still stuck there when I woke up 6 hours later.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've just bought a HP mini compaq laptop. The laptop doesn't have any CD/DVD "reader". So i was forced to download the .iso file to install ubuntu in addition to Windows XP that was present when i bought it. To do so i used UNetbootin, and i used my only hard disk as a live CD. But when i wanted to install ubuntu, they told me to create a partition. The problem is that i can't. I have only one partition sda1(nfst) which covers the whole stockage memory, and an empty space(8Mo). I can't acceed to any of the resizing or modifying options to edit the nfst partition. The only options are manage flags and umount. When i click on this one, they tell me : # umount /cdrom : cdrom is busy.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently used a GParted CD to resize my partition with Vista installed on it in order to make room for another partition in which I installed Linux onto. I, unfortunately, did not back up my data. My Vista partition now does not show up in Grub and when I set it to just boot to the Vista install it will never boot and is stuck in a loop.
I tried using this guide to try to get it back. My problem comes about halfway through this guide when I go to repair my Vista installation nothing shows up under installations. I would really like to get my data from the Vista partition. I guess if I'm SOL then at least I'll remember to backup my data next time..
I recently installed Squeeze and it was simple and is running great. I have a usb fat32 drive that shares data on 3 partitions with winxp. None are listed in fstab. They all are mounted in /media.2 partitions, Video and Music, are shown in gparted as mounted by their volume labels, which is what I want; eg /media/MUSIC. The DATA volume is mounted by its' uuid. This is how it is displayed on my desktop. The other 2 volumes display the way I want: MUSIC and VIDEO. I have changed the mount point in /media to the label name:/media/DATA but it returns to its' uuid after reboot. How can I change it to display the label name? It works fine, but I have a need to "tidy up" my desktop.
