OpenSUSE Multimedia :: VLC - Backlight Doesn't Turn Off
Dec 17, 2010
unning 11.2 on laptop used as stationary desktop. Normally, the backlight turns off after several minutes of inactivity from keyboard/mouse. However, once video played using VLC, the screen simply blanks while backlight stays on, until system restart. Using Totem does not have this effect, but I like VLC.

Debian Lenny on a Toshiba Portege 350000:08.0 Bridge: ALi Corporation M7101 Power Management Controller [PMU]01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XPAi1 (rev 82)kernel version 2.6.26-2-686On my system, "xset dpms force off" blanks the screen, but does not turn off the backlight. This means that the automated screen off in X does not actually save any power when it blanks the screen.I can turn off the backlight manually using the BIOS tool "vbetool dpms off" (but then I have to turn it back on again manually too).Question 1: is this a problem with the graphics driver interface, or with X, or with the power management driver interface?Question 2: as a workaround, is there any way for me to hook into the dpms off/on that X is doing, and run a script to call vbetool? The best workaround hack I have come across so far is to have a screensaver that calls vbetool, but I was hoping to find something that doesn't require me to run a daemon all the time.

I have a note HP Pavilion 15-p171nr with Deban Wheezy installed
used X = Gnome (gdm3) in classic view
Hardware:
Code: Select allyaroslav@hpnote:~$ lspci -k | grep -E "VGA|3D"
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b)
0a:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation Device 1341 (rev a2)
yaroslav@hpnote:~$
[Code] .....
The problem: backlight is in maximum state and I can not change it.
There are a tons of advices like this:
1 - Open terminal (as a superuser) and type: gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub
2 - In the text file that opens, find the line which says GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" and, inbetween the "", insert the words "acpi_backlight=vendor" (the line will be as follows: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_backlight=vendor"), save and close the file.
3 - Back again in the terminal session, type: sudo update-grub
4 - Reboot.
It does not work...

After upgrading to Mythbuntu 10.10 from 9.10 (clean install) on my combined front/backend I cannot get monitor (Dell 3007) to switch off from remote, I have been using simple script to DPMS force off for years with no problems, it still works, but some random time later the backlight comes back on. I have tryed the more complex scripts that stop and start the frontend and all of the acpi_osi options. Disabling screensaver has no effect. what causes this, or how to fix? Sysem is Abit IP35e (I suspect this board is the problem)
[Code]...
I have 2 remote frontends both upgraded OK. I have tryed installing 10.10 on a 'scrap' P4 machine, DPMS off works fine on it. I would try another install and/or another MoBo but its the only TV system in the house now.

i just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome. In gnome i can't change compiz seetings at all - the windows freezes after i try to click on 'Enable desktop effects', and that's it. It worked fairly well in ubuntu though.

why the bootloader won't show up when I turn on the PC. The only things that come up with search results are 'Why ubuntu isn't on the boatloader' but my problem is is that the boot loader doesn't even SHOW UP.
Installation went completely fine, downloaded a version 10 32-bit iso file and then put in the folder with wibu and it asked me to restart. Restarted the PC, nothing came up so I thought you might have to restart again, restarted again, still no bootloader.
After looking in the 'Add/Remove Programs' of Windows it does say it's installed, so why the bootloader isn't showing up is rather mindbobbling.

I just upgraded from FC10 to FC11 (32-bit) on an old Dell laptop. I set my power management settings (in Gnome) to turn the monitor off after some idle period but always leave the computer running and the hard drives powered. I also set my screen saver to a blank screen. I noticed that the screen saver does come on (turning the screen black), but the monitor back lighting never goes off. I tried different idle times for the power management settings (I usually set it to 1 min, but some other posts implied that 11 mins might work). I should also mention that this is after I've logged into a user account, not sitting at the login screen.
I didn't have this problem in FC10 (the monitor would actually turn off) so I figured it was a bug in FC11, but I can't seem to find a thread addressing this issue. I've found some what similar threads, but none mentioning this particular problem.

i used WUBI to put Ubuntu on an SD card. i ran it off that for a while, and keeping my Vista. then i tried upgrading to to 10.10. there was even a special installer for GRUB in the process.
that's when the problem started. after my comp finished the upgrade, it restarted. but this time, in grub rescue. i tried some of the codes in the wiki, but everything came up unknown command. then someone in the chat told me to use a Live CD and a Super GRUB2 cd.
the LiveCD booted to a screen with a picture of a "keyboard=person with a circle around it". then after a few minutes of just that, lines of text reading:EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3567 EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3577 (and more with consecutive numbers) the Super GRUB2 cd let me get the OS list i usually get from starting up. only Vista would start up without problem. Ubuntu had.. a problem i cant recall right now.
i redid the Live CD, and im back in Ubuntu. i tried the ways of reinstalling GRUB2, as advised by the chats, but nothing seemed to work as described in the reinstallation section of this.
and that is where i stand right now. also, my SD drive's light doesn't turn off now, even when there is no card in it. im kind of worried that when GRUB installed at the 10.10 upgrade, it made that a partisan.

I have XFX ATI-HD5670 and use proprietary catalyst 11.2-1 in 64-bit Fedora 14.
I am not sure when this started, or if it ever did work before, but when I started noticing that the screensaver will not turn off the monitor, I set the gnome power manager to make the monitor sleep after an hour.
Now, the display will not turn back on after it has been in sleep mode. I know the system is still running fine as I can ssh from another PC and see that everything seems to be normal, no error message in dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, etc.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows that monitor DPMS is not detected but still enables DPMS:
Is this a problem with catalyst driver? I know it's not the PC or the monitor, because I have a 2nd PC with the same video driver with the same problem, but others without this driver don't (ati open source, nvidia, etc. all work fine.)
I'm wondering if the problem always existed before, but I just didn't notice it because the display sleep mode was never set? If that's the case, my hunch is that it looked like it worked because the monitor was smart enough to turn itself off when the screensaver kicked in and just showed a blank screen, and the video driver was never involved with sleep mode until I set it in gnome power manager, at which point it started showing this problem of not waking up? And because the screensaver was no longer set to blank the screen, but to show some animation, that's why the monitor will never sleep anymore?

My card Wifi network doesn't turn on, even at loading configuration of the system is failed. I have to wait a long time until the system itself to load.
And when I write ifconfig or iwconfig is displayed in the console interface wireless card.
And when I come in the panel on the network card, it immediately pops up a window that you can not load the network card modules.
I don't know what could have happened, I do not recall that I recently messed with the system.

Shouldn't it be simply connecting the HDMI cable finding the source channel on the television and then I get sound and picture..

Which package do I need to install to get this to work?

My K3B doesn't seem to recognise a blank CD in the drive tray.
I'm on OS 11.2, K3B & codecs from 11.2 packman, and 11.2 KDE4 factory (ie kde4.4).
When I put a blank cd in, the kde4 device notifier shows me a blank cd and offers to create a project with k3b. I create a data project & click burn, the burn dialog has a greyed out Burn button, and the media selector dropdown says please insert an empty or appendable medium.
If I eject & re-insert the disc at this point, the device notifier again tells me I've inserted a blank cd, k3b's dialog freezes for a second (seems to notice something has happened) but still does not list my cd and remains as it was before.
k3bsetup reports no problems. Burning from commandline (cdrecord) works fine. Dolphin also knows about the blank cd. I've burned to these discs before with no problems (K3B used to work quite recently, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks ago). Updates have been applied in the meantime.

If I play the file from a terminal with gmplayer no errors are reported...

doesn't bring about anything sound-like.
