Sep 1, 2009
I have recently installed Fedora11 and have managed to get the printer side of the above multifunction machine working but not the scanner . The computer recognises the scanner and sane, xsane, sanelib's etc are all installed . When I try to open it it gives the following:
Failed to open device 'brother3:bus5;dev1': Error during device I/O

I just installed an all-in-one Brother MFC-8670DN in Ubuntu 9.04. The printing works great but I cannot get the scanner recognized. I tried brscan, brscan2 and brscan3 from the Linux section of the Brother website to no avail. Previously had a lower model Brother MFC working fine. I called Brother and they said that "I need to call Linux for help with the scanner." Anyone who can help with the Brother MFC-8670DN? It would be very much appreciated. This printer may go back to the store if I cannot get the scanner working in Ubuntu 9.04.

I have a Brother MFC-6490CW network Scanner. Had it installed and working great in Gutsy. Upgraded to Natty 11.04 the other day, and the scanner stopped working. Printing is still ok. When I try to open a scanning program I get:
"No Devices Found"
I tried reinstalling the drivers, no luck.

Have a Brother MFC-9440CN the Scan function of which operated perfectly in Fedora 11. Have upgraded to Fedora 13, now when the Scanner Tool is activated (XSane .997) an error message is returned "Error during CMS conversion. Could Not open scanner ICM profile: (null)". Has anyone had and solved this problem, I have tried everything identified on the Brother web site. The scanner works perfectly when accessed through the Simple Scan application.

I have a Brother MFC-7345 Printer/Scanner and I got the printer working but the scanner won't work. I've installed all the drivers from Brother and followed all their instructions but still nothing. sane-find-scanner gives me
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
[code]....
and scanimage -L gives me No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

I have a DCP 7030 multifunction printer. I have installed all proprietary drivers from Brother (printer an scanner drivers). [1] Printing works but unfortunately both Simple-scan and X-Sane do not recognize the scanner. Brother provides some scanner settings [2] - but unfortunately not for Fedora 13. I have tried the settings for Fedora 12 but they do not work. [URL]

I'm using 9.10 on x86 architecture. I've searched the forums and anything related to scanning talks about editing /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules which doesn't seem to exist on my system. Judging from the dates most of these posts probably relate to intrepid or jaunty. XSane just says 'no devices available'. Printing works fine.

Failed to Open Device 'Snapscan:libusb:005:002' Invalid Argument.
I tried the gnome image scanning software too but it didn't recognize the scanner at all. The only software that worked is vuescan but unfortunately it is non-free software !!!!

During installation of Ubuntu 10.04, there was no driver found for my Brother MFC-665CW printer/scanner. However, I recently learned on the Forum that there is a printer driver available for the MFC-665CW through Synaptic that can be accessed by searching on printer name. I got it, and it works great. I've not been successful in locating a driver for the scanner part of the MFC-665CW. Does anyone know if there is a driver available on Synaptic that will work for the scanner on a MFC-665CW, and if so how to get to it (i.e., what to search on to locate it)?

There is a problem with scanning on Brother multifunctional under Debian Squeeze/Sid. I get things smooth and good under root (both scanimage and xsane), but under user it gives
Code:
scanimage: open of device brother3:bus6;dev1 failed: Invalid argument Obviously as under root works fine, lsusb has no problems with detection.
Code:
Bus 005 Device 010: ID 04f9:01ea Brother Industries, Ltd
Already fixed /etc/fstab:
Code:
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,devmode=0666 0 0
but it is useless anyway. I had already used the scanner under simple user in ubuntu and it all worked.

I have a Brother MFC-240C inkjet printer & scanner. On installation of Maverick Meerkat v. 10.10, my scanner function failed. I added the same line into the file as for Lucid Lynx v. 10.04 and the scanner has scanned perfectly. The lines Brother gives are for the following file: Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04
1. Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules" file.
2. Add the following two lines to the end of the device list. (Before the line "# The following rule will disable ..."):
# Brother scanners

I have installed a new network multifunctional device Samsung CLX-3185FN using the drivers provided by the manufacturer (Samsung Unified Driver). The printing over the network works fine, I can administer the device using browser. The only problem I have is using scanner over the network. It works fine if I disable firewall, but is blocked with firewall enabled. I can not figure out which ports or port-range I must enable for this scanner. Do you have any information on this one or how can I found out the necessary ports to open?

Recently got a Canon Canoscan 8800F after looking it up on the SANE site and said it was completely supported for Linux.
I have downloaded the pixma drivers and have compiled the command line program, but it can't find the scanner.
lsusb returns a Canon scanner Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04a9:1901 Canon, Inc.
and sane-find-scanner returns:found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1901 [CanoScan]) at libusb:001:005
but scanimage -L (under my user login or sudo) returns only the webcam. No other scanner found.
My system is running Linux Mint 7, ia64 kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

I am trying to get Canon MP250 printer and scanner working in OpenSUSE 11.3 and so far I've had limited success. Both components work up to a point, but aren't fully operational.First of all, I installed the drivers from Canon website for both parts of the multifunctional device. Here's the report on the versions (it's localised, but it shouldn't be hard to understand ).
The printer works for the most part. But it fails to set images to greyscale when I request the driver to. There are some guides about that for Ubuntu, but none for openSUSE that I could find. Also, what does the setting "Amount of Extension" in the printer options do?It would also be nice if I could set the printing quality as well. Right now it seems to print everything with the default quality setting, but personally I like using lower print quality since that saves ink and makes it a little faster.
The scanner, however, is hardly usable at all. If I try to use Canon's ScanGear MP to scan, I can hear that it operates the scanner, but the program itself freezes and after a while gives me the "Cannot communicate with scanner" error. On certain settings I can also hear that the scanner itself doesn't complete the scan (the indicator on it also reports an operation in progress, but it never gets completed). If I try to use Acquire images, the native KDE scanner application, I can get it to scan, but only on very specific settings: it must scan it in colour and the resolution must be equal to or over 300 dpi. If I try anything else, the resulting image file is completely blank or I get an "Error during device I/O". And, of course, it can't save PDF files.

I am having the oddest issue with the network scanning on my Brother 8080DN. When I click scan (primarily scan to e-mail) from my Brother Control Center on my computer, the scanner works fine. However, when I go to the actual printer/scanner and attempt to scan the printer does not scan, but these error messages come up on my computer:
"Failed to connect to device... MTW005" and "Scanning Failed... CC031"
This is an issue because the scanner (which is networked to several computers) is not in the same room as my computer, so I have to run back and forth between rooms in order to scan multiple documents.
What is puzzling me is that the scanning works when I initiate the scan from the computer (so obviously the scanner is networked to the computer), but not the other way around.
I tried installing updated drivers and reinstalling all Brother software on the computer and neither has worked.

Just acquired a slide/negative scanner (Traveller TV6500) which is reputed only to work under Winderz. Anyone know of a way to get it to run under Fedora 12?
I'm running
Linux Fedora-Blue 2.6.32.21-168.fc12.i686 #1 SMP Wed Sep 15 16:25:04 UTC 2010 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
lsusb shows
Bus 001 Device 019: ID 05a9:1550 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. VEHO Filmscanner
I've tried running it in a VirtualBox Windows XP, but it doesn't appear to work - goes off & churns but doesn't appear to get a picture back.

I can't get the scanner to work. I get this:
[pedroski@fangshan ~]$ scanimage -L
device `v4l:/dev/video0' is a Noname USB2.0 1.3M UVC WebCam virtual device
device `hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_1050_J410_series?serial=CN0CN3H3CZ05HW' is a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet_1050_J410_series all-in-one
and this
[pedroski@fangshan ~]$ scanimage -d hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_1050_J410_series?serial=CN0CN3H3CZ05HW -T
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_1050_J410_series?serial=CN0CN3H3CZ05HW failed: Device busy.
Fedora came with 'Simple Scan' That also returns 'device busy'. Can this scanner work under Fedora? I have tried turning it off, then on. I have rebooted. I have hpijs and hplip installed also hplip-gui. I have put myself in the group lp.

I got a Visioneer One Touch 9020 USB scanner at a local thrift store and I can't get it working. At the store they said it works. Not tested with Linux. It was only $3 so I figured I'd take the plunge -- proceeds go to local charities. Running sane-find-scanner outputs this:
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.
# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.
[Code]...
says no sane devices found, as does the Xsane program when I try to start that. Should I take apart the scanner and see what chip it uses? On a side note, the same thrift store has a Mustek scanner that has only a USB connection, apparently drawing power from the USB bus. But I'm skeptical about this because all the scanners I've seen require 1.25 amps of current and USB provides only 0.5 amps. Has anyone any experience with this scanner and would it be worthwhile to purchase it and try to get it going? I have two scanners that work well with Linux but they are both the multifunction type that copy, scan and print. I'm hoping I can find a regular flatbed scanner. And I should also mention I have Python-imaging-sane installed for flatbed scanners.

I just received a Canon Pixma MX320 as a gift.
I am currently running the Ubuntu 10.04 OS
I was able to get the printer up and running by downloading the printer driver for debian linux (3.1) from the Canon site without any problems.
Unfortunately I am not having the same luck with the scanner.
I tried downloading ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) (1.3) from the same Canon site but have not yet been able to get the XSane Image Scanner to recognize this scanner driver for my Canon.

I have a problem here where sane no longer detects my scanner.
Code:
lsusb
reports
Bus 007 Device 002: ID 03f0:5b17 Hewlett-Packard
Code:
sane-find-scanner
reports:
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [Hewlett-Packard], product=0x5b17 [HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi MFP]) at libusb:007:002
Code:
scanimage -L
reports
No scanners were identified. xsane reports no devices detected (I have it in French, "Aucun p'rif'rique disponible"). I get the same when I launch xsane as root, so I doubt it is a usb-rules issue. It used to work; I checked /proc/bus/usb, but that is empty.

OS: CentOS 5.6 yesterday i bought a new HP network printer/scanner (OfficeJet Pro 8500). It installed correctly using hplip drivers. I can print and scan without any problem, very nice and fast device. I did some research where the information where the device port is stored in sane, but cannot find anything. I tried to remove my old network device port for my Brother scanner, but did not find the config file where this information is stored. Neither /etc/sane.d/* nor ~/.sane/xsane/* contains this information.
