Hardware :: Brother MFC-8670DN -- Scanner Not Working In Ubuntu 9.04?

May 11, 2009

I just installed an all-in-one Brother MFC-8670DN in Ubuntu 9.04. The printing works great but I cannot get the scanner recognized. I tried brscan, brscan2 and brscan3 from the Linux section of the Brother website to no avail. Previously had a lower model Brother MFC working fine. I called Brother and they said that "I need to call Linux for help with the scanner." Anyone who can help with the Brother MFC-8670DN? It would be very much appreciated. This printer may go back to the store if I cannot get the scanner working in Ubuntu 9.04.

Judging from the dates most of these posts probably relate to intrepid or jaunty. XSane just says 'no devices available'. Printing works fine.

Ubuntu :: Scanner Driver For Brother MFC-665CW?

May 18, 2010

During installation of Ubuntu 10.04, there was no driver found for my Brother MFC-665CW printer/scanner. However, I recently learned on the Forum that there is a printer driver available for the MFC-665CW through Synaptic that can be accessed by searching on printer name. I got it, and it works great. I've not been successful in locating a driver for the scanner part of the MFC-665CW. Does anyone know if there is a driver available on Synaptic that will work for the scanner on a MFC-665CW, and if so how to get to it (i.e., what to search on to locate it)?

There is a problem with scanning on Brother multifunctional under Debian Squeeze/Sid. I get things smooth and good under root (both scanimage and xsane), but under user it gives

Code:

Code:

Already fixed /etc/fstab:

Code:

but it is useless anyway. I had already used the scanner under simple user in ubuntu and it all worked.

Long story short, my HTPC has a keyboard, but no mouse.I'd gotten pretty good at working the machine with no mouse, but after my upgrade to Natty Narwhal today, the Ctrl+Esc shortcut to open the Applications window no longer works. Alt+F2 only works when another application is already open.I can get to the Applications menu using Ctrl+Alt+NumLock and mouse emulation, but it's pretty painful.Have I messed something up here? My install went a little messy, but I've managed to get everything else working and I doubt a keyboard control would be a bad install/upgrade.

Slackware :: Sane - After Upgrade To 1.0.22 Cannot Find Scanner

Mar 24, 2011

I have a Samsung SCX-4200. It was working pretty good with sane 1.0.21. I'm using slackware current, keeping updated (almost) every day. On the Mon Feb 28 update sane was updated to sane-1.0.22-i486-1. After that update xsane (as user) cannot find my scanner. I was able to find it running sane-find-scanner as root, but scanimage -L (as root) wasn't able to find the scanner. Now I have updated to the last sane package, named sane-1.0.22-i486-2 . In the changelog I can see that this rebuild should add libusb support.

In fact, now there's no way to find the scanner. And now also sane-find-scanner (as root) is no more able to detect the scanner, also running the command as root. I've tried running sane-find-scanner -v -v and scanimage -v -v -L but I can't get no useful hints. I have checked the sane configuration files but always seems good (the row with USB IDs is not commented in the backend file, which is xerox_mfp, and the backend is listed in dll.conf).

Ubuntu :: Epson NX420 Printer With Working Scanner

Dec 5, 2010

I've been trying to get my Epson NX420 printer to scan for about three months now, and I finally got it working. Here's how:
1. Go to [URL] and search for your printer. Select distribution and version and answer a couple of other questions.
2. Download pipslite_1.5.0-2_i386.deb, (or the 64-bit version), and all the iscan*.deb files (again, appropriate to your system).
3. [CRITICAL] Go to [URL] and download this 8.04 package which worked just fine for me on 10.10.
4. Use the Software Center or GDebi or sudo dpkg -i the .debs in this order:

1) libtdl3, which is a dependency for Step 2.
2) pipslite
3) iscan-data
4) iscan-network
5) iscan
(If you use a USB connection, you don't need the iscan-network file.) This got my NX420 scanner up and running just fine. Installing libtdl3 was the key; in fact, I used the Debian Lenny package.

Ubuntu :: Epson Stylus Cx4300 Scanner Not Working?

Jan 4, 2011

I have an Epson CX4300 on Ubuntu 10.10 and I can't get it to scan. I loaded the driver for CX4200 since CX4300 isn't listed in [URL]

sane-find-scanner finds the scanner but scanimage doesn't:
ilan@ilan-main:~$ sane-find-scanner -q
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8, product=0x083f) at libusb:003:002
ilan@ilan-main:~$ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different, check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

XSane also reports No Devices available and number 4 in their possible reasons is The backend is not loaded by SANE (man sane-dll). I get: ilan@ilan-main:~$ man sane-dll No manual entry for sane-dll

I do get a man for sane-epson so that hints that the epson driver exists. The fact that sane-dll doesn't seem to exist is probably the problem. I'm using libsane in the Synaptic Package Manager and that is supposed to supply the backends. Should it include sane-dll?

Ubuntu :: Natty - Upgrade To 11.04 From 10.10 On CD

Apr 30, 2011

I'm on Natty since yesterday but I started the day before. My first impression was great. I now had an option top upgrade from 10.10 and not loose my data! So I did. It all went fine until the point where The Upgrade tries to restore my applications. It failed and returned the message:
unbalanced group option, expect badness.

And that was it! And I would have been waiting a very long time if I wasn't looking the details of what's going on because from here and after a 3rd try, I went to sleep online to find out I was still expecting badness the next day. I did a hard reboot and tried login in. I reached the login screen with success but could never login. I was using the encryption options which it seems comes after the restoration of application.

The symptoms are those of a wrong password. I finally did a clean install and restored my data from my backups (wouldn't try something new without a backup). Otherwise, I like Unity. I see a few things that needs polishing here and there but I don't mind using it. I think that voices from people liking it need to be heard as well because they usually don't have a reason to complain and it then looks like every body think Unity is not good.
