I installed Fedora 12 from the Live CD and all is going well. Using most of the defaults, including Gnome.I can't see my WD MyBook World on the network. It came with software for Mac and Win, but for Linux, they just say contact your Linux Provider.
View 2 RepliesThis is a problem I've been working at on and off for quite a long time now. I acquired one of these devices from a thrift store and eventually decided that the drives would serve better mounted in my desktop PC, rather than hooked up to a router where large-scale backups are made unbearably slow.
What I quickly discovered is that these drives don't want to appear to any OS. The Windows installer doesn't see them. My Linux distro (at the time) didn't see them. A GParted live CD didn't see them. DBAN didn't see them. The BIOS, however, saw them, so I banged my head against a few possible solutions.
Martin Hinner's blog seemed promising but didn't have the information I wanted. This blog only had disassembly guides/photos, and no info (that I was able to find) on actually getting the drives to work in a Linux system. I'd love to have an extra 4TB of storage in my desktop.
I have run into a problem using FreeNX in combination with public key authentication. I have Googled myself silly, but I can't find the exact answer to my problem. I am hoping that someone here will know the answer. First, let me tell you what I am trying to accomplish:
- I don't want my ssh server exposed to the Internet with password logins enabled. I only want public key authentication.
- I want to have access to NX server from anywhere in the world.
- I want NX to use a custom keypair, not the default supplied by FreeNX.
My environment:

The login problem persists, whether I am connected to the same network or to another network. Since ssh logins work, I don't think a firewall is the culprit. What do I have working so far: - The ssh server on the remote host only accepts public key authentication and I can login from the client without problems. So far so good. - FreeNX is installed on the remote host, using a custom keypair.
Authentication with this key works. I can login from the client with the nx user and the public key.

I can't seem to set this older server right to deny outside access while I build a website on it. What I am trying to accomplish is deny anyone outside of my network access to the website, but replace the 403 error with a temp page letting them know it is coming soon. I have googled for hours and everything I have tried just denies me as well. Seems to be all or nothing.

So my World Book Network Drive stopped working all of a sudden and I decided to remove it from the enclosure and plug it in via USB. I can see it in Disk Utility, I took a snapshot of it and attached it here. Normally when I plug a hard disk into ubuntu you can see it in places, not the case with this one. I would like to try and retrieve the data from it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am just trying to get SSH working between 2 local machines on OpensSuse 11.4 boxes. I have the SSHD daemon running, the firewall is configured to allow SSH to pass, and I am using SSH's password authentication. However, my machines cannot see each other. Anytime I try to SSH, I get "Could not resolve hostname<hostname>: Name or service not known."
Of course, that leads me to believe I need an entry in my /etc/hosts file. However, I use DHCP, and therefore have a dynamic IP address. Therefore, my hosts names will only be good until the next IP renewal. How in the world do I configure SSH with a DHCP assigned address?
I bought a WD My Book World Network Hard drive and are trying to connect it. I am using Suse 11.2 and have it connect wired through a Netgear WGR614 router.I believe I can use Samba?It is working under Windows and it connected as network drive.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been using a WD MyBook terrabyte USB drive for several months with no problem. Several days ago, I used the "safely remove drive" option but then unplugged the cable before the removal process had finished.
Now when I plug the drive in, the WD SmartWave section of the drive will mount. This is additional software for Windows computers that came with the drive and that I don't use. The main drive itself, though, will not mount. The drive doesn't show up on the left side of a navigation window, either.
I can see the drive using Disk Utility. It is located at /dev/sbd. (a) mount this drive or (b) recover its data so I can format it? I'd much prefer (a), of course. Regarding my level of tech savvy: I've been using Ubuntu for a couple years, but I chose Ubuntu because it allows me to use Linux while still remaining relatively ignorant about things, which is my comfort zone.
On my machine I currently have 2 internal HD's - sata 3 & running in ahci mode. The bios confirms that they are running at 6G/s. For typical every day use, running apps & such, all seems fine & the machine seems speedy. But when I go to transfer large folders, (20G+) I'm only seeing 70M/s top speed, with 20 to 40 being the norm. (Shoot, I got 20M/s transferring to a usb 2.0 drive.) It doesn't matter if this is from partition to partition on the same drive (A or B) or between drives, or the direction.
So my question is, shouldn't this be giving a LOT faster speeds? Even if the drives ARE at the low end of the speed chart, per say? (WD CAVIAR BLUE 500G & 250G 7200RPM) This also doesn't matter what OS's I'm using either. Also, what ARE the the real world speeds on this? What are YOU ALL getting?
I installed Gentoo on my WD Mybook WE II and im forget/dont know the ssh password. I can access Public shared folder but there is no access to change it. Any idea? I need to log in to mybook via ssh to install anti virus on it.

The server is mainly Http / Ftp / Mail server, so I stopped all services, to see which one it is. ervices stopped, still 100Mbps go out like ants in the flood.
I updated the system, made a backup, installed IPtraf. It seems that I have something 'installed' and my server is running something to attack User computers. It seems to try to find something on random IP's random ports. I am a little bit confused now. As long as my sites are running, I'm ~OK~ but sooner or later I would like to have my bandwidth back. How could I try to hunt down which service/app/process got hacked?

Is there anyway to get a 2 terabyte NTFS partition mounted in Suse Linux? Would be better to just mount if possible so I could use the storage for both my Linux and windows pcs.

Want to format and partition the external hard drive for USB storage for DD WRT (i.e. into ext3)The drive is MS-DOS (FAT32) - Using Disk Utility (MAC) i erased what was on the drive.It mounts properly and can be accessed on the Mac OS.Upon plugging the USB into the Mac, the drive does not show on the Ubuntu desktop.Under the USB icon (bottom right) it indicates no USB devices attached however the "Western Digital My Book [0175]" is greyed out.
Going "Places" > "Computer" Only "File System" visible.

im having problems connecting mybook 2 with my laptop. Everything was ok and running perfectly and there was no changes in my laptop or upgrades and it stop working. I was not able to see the computers in my network then I fixed it I can see them but when I try to browse the files the OS tells me that is unable to mount location and failed to retrieve share list from server. The funny part is that if I go to Places>Connect to server and type my mybook ip address, my laptop can connect and I can browse the files. I really dont know what is the problem. My firewall is down so I dont think that is the problem. If anyone can help me with these because I know im able to connect to my mybook but i am unable to connect to any other laptop or my WD-Tv live.

I am running vmware workstation to host my linux web server. i have my VMWare setup to use my second NIC solely. it is bridged and the tcp/ip is disable from the host. i can ping the ip address but cant access tomcat on port 8080 from the outside. i can hit it fine from inside fedora. i have configured my router (wrt54gs with DD-WRT firmware) for port forwarding. so basically i think that the problem is somewhere in between the host and the vmware configuring allowing the port to be forwarded through.

This machine I have is not a server (in fact I know pretty much nothing about web servers).. this machine is used purely for local app development (python PyQt4/ and C++/wx - making games, general utilities, specialized calculators...etc)

Ubuntu 10.10, 32 bit.I've got a 2TB WD external disk which has USB 3.0, and I have a USB 3.0 PCIe card.Plugging the drive into the card has no effect at all. The drive powers itself up, but the kernel log is silent. A USB 2.0 flash disk works properly with the card, and the WD disk works properly plugged into a USB 2.0 port, but the combination of the 3.0 disk and the 3.0 card is completely nonfunctional, even when using a small extension cable to cut off the superspeed connection.
Searching suggested that this is because of a bug which would prevent superspeed from working, but should -not- cause complete failure (highspeed fallback should be OK). I tried the suggested fix for this anyway, which was to install kernel 2.6.37-020637rc1 (was 2.6.35-24-generic). This did not help my problem nor did it correct that endpoint error message.

how to install Ubuntu. I have only ran it as a partition and am not sure the process i need to go through to install it on a newly built machine. My second question is that when i partitioned it ( was kinda giving it a test run to see if i could cope with the change from windows) I remember not being able to run world of warcraft. I couldn't get wine to run it. I want to run starcraft II and I'm not sure how thats going to go over. Is that going to give me a problem? I realize these should probably be separate threads but i figured these could be answered relatively easily.
View 6 Replies View RelatedGot a few servers runnning and they all connect fine to the net. Each are running with a static IP provided by my ISP. But I have one server were I re-installed Debian Lenny - or tried to. At the stage were it wants to connect to a mirror it cannot due to network problems. I tried a new install leaving it behind a router. This solved the problem and it connected. Tried once more directly connected to a static IP and same problem happened - it got to the point with the mirror. Tried changing the settings after the installation through the router. This is what I get from ifconfig :

If I ping it from one of my other servers it shows as OK and can also ping my other servers from the server in question, but if I ping google.com it times out (fails). The IP 92.62.196.77 is in the range that I can use. Checked that with my ISP. Just to make sure I tried disconnecting one of the servers that I have working and changed the server in question settings and still it came out with the same problem.
My mail server stop receiving mail from the outside world. I need to ask you about the required logs, that I need to perform.

View 1 Replies View RelatedA couple years ago I tried to enable LDAP/Kerberos sign-on from Active Directory 2003. Ran into a whole bunch of issues (mostly related to our Red Hat ES3 servers). I'm going to start looking into this again. We still have our old Red Hat ES3 servers (along with AS4 and 5.5).
So my options are basically this:
- Try again to integrate with Active Directory
- Setup an RHDS server (completely separate from AD)
- Setup an RHDS server and sync with AD
I'm looking for a simple method that is reliable. Integrating with AD left a bad taste because of all the weird issues we ran into but I was trying to integrate using LDAP and Kerberos (and as I understand it we can authenticate using LDAP only) . I need to be able to restrict access to groups of users and groups of servers which I know is possible in RHDS. I've read a few documents from Red Hat about RHDS and it sounds like a good product, but there aren't many impressions from actual users on the internet.
Any one know of a world clock applet that can be run in gnome 3, something that you can show or choose from different cities around the world.
