I just installed Fedora 13 on my HP HDX 16 laptop (and accidentally corrupted my vista partition by resizing it so I'm pretty much stuck now. ^_^)
The light for the wifi toggle button constantly flashes between blue and orange (normally meaning the wifi card is on or off). Does anybody know how I can fix this?
I posted this on Launchpad under bug# 569445 and though I'm certain someone in our heroic development community will have a look at it eventually, maybe someone can help me here in the meantime, or at least provide some background info. Maybe a little reassurance that Ubuntu isn't broken for my Wifi is all I need.

I'm having a bit of trouble with my wifi. Every time the network has activity, it blinks between orange and blue. The normal behaviour of the LED is to be blue when wifi is enabled and orange when disabled. Often it blinks rapidly between the two, sometimes appearing white the change is so rapid. You can see how this would be annoying (as well as raise some concern over the life of the LED's)...
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. My computer is an HP Pavillion dv7 1135nr. Wifi hardware specs: Realtek RTL8101, Atheros AR5007.
When i try to install Fedora 15 on a clean machine it freezes as soon as the pixelated load bar with the white, light blue and dark blue colors show.
I have tried several different versions of Fedora (64bit and 32bit) and have tried to burn it to a CD and/or DVD (For the larger version) and copying it to a usb pen with universal linux usb, liveUSB creator (from Fedora) and last one i don't remember the name on.
I don't really have any Linux experience. But I wanted to try it out. Now I'm afraid I did not set this up properly. Grub gives me 3 options:

When I select <Other> to boot into windows... it starts to try to boot... but then flashes a quick blue screen & restarts. I tried to boot into Window's normal mode, safe mode, and command line... all just restart fdisk -l gives the following:

View 1 Replies View Relatedthe system was off and now it won't boot up. It have power because the monitor is showing the orange light as if the tower is off. I'm assuming it may be the PSU went dead. Well, today, I've changed the PSU which should be a good working one and still no power to the tower system. I dont overclock. As far as I can tell the fan is not spinning since this has happen. This is an Intel C2D, Biostar motherboard, 320gb WD HD & 2gb memory.

I understand that Ubuntu typically has some disk activity even when idle, but I believe that I have a problem that I am worried is affecting my disk drive - which has recently become quite loud. The system disk activity light flashes about twice per second, all the time, when idle. iostat shows a Blk_wrtn/s of between 10 and 40. I am running Lucid x64. The system disk uses ext4 for root and ext4 for /home. The disk activity starts before I even log in. There is no disk activity if I drop to the root shell in recovery mode - as seen by no flashing light and iostat writes = 0. I have tried killing my media server processes, Mediatomb and Squeezeboxserver. I have unmounted the ntfs data drive. There is nothing else running beyond the vanilla install to my recollection other the services above that I stopped. How can I determine which process is causing the constant writing? I do not have this issue on my laptop which is running Karmic, and as I mentioned earlier, I think this non-stop activity is damaging my drive.

I have a Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv6000. I had no issues before the upgrade, but after, my wireless driver refuses to turn on the wireless at all. I've seen in most of the posts, people can see the wireless networks but not access them. I can't even get my little orange wireless (off) light to turn blue (on). The "additional drivers" option in "administration" was a bust and I've tried reinstalling the kernel from my original disk iso.

For me the light glows orange when the wireless is OFF and blue when the wireless is ON. In Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) the light was always orange, even if the Wireless was on, but my wireless worked right out of the box so I was grateful for that, but since upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) I've noticed that my wireless light alternates between orange and blue frequently and sometimes flashes madly when wireless activity is occurring.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this as it can get quite annoying, the light sometimes stays blue for a while but will ultimately keep going back to orange and vice-versa, my friend who also has a Compaq Presario CQ61 (Revised model of mine) has his wireless light constantly blinking orange and blue no matter what.The wireless itself works fine, I can connect to any wireless connection and use it without having to install anything else, so it does work out of the box, which again, I'm grateful for.The wireless adapter is a Atheros AR5001 Wireless network adapter. I had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week.
I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related.
I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want.
I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?

How do you toggle between the button and text-based location bar in Nautilus in Lucid. I can only get Nautilus to show the directory path as buttons and not as as text based in the form of /home/Desktop.Previously there was a button to toggle between them.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS. My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX1210AU (TX1000 series). After disabling the touchpad using the toggle button and reenabling it again, it stopped working. I tried restarting my laptop and the mouse worked again only up to the Login Screen. After logging in to my account, the mouse froze again. I tried making a new account and tried logging into it (I'm using it now) and it's now fixed. Does Ubuntu change any user settings everytime the touchpad toggle (on/off) button is switched? Maybe I could just reenable it myself.

Then the terminal turned into a light blue background that says "Package Configuration" with a grey text box titled "Configuring sun-java-jre" and then has the java license agreement.I pressed enter assuming that would accept the agreement but it did not. How do I accept the license agreement so the installation can continue...?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using the linksys wmp300n with ndiswrapper to connect to a belkin wireless router with a static ip (192.168.2.3). The rest of the PCs in the house have .2, .4, and .5 only running windows XP and 7. This one won't stay connected during large file transfers within the network or over the internet in Ubuntu. I made a script to restart ndiswrapper but I have to do it every 2 or 3 min during a file transfer. I can't play online games at all. No ssh sessions for more than a few min... so on and so forth. None of these issues happen in Windows 7 but when it was first installed it had to do something with dhcp before it would stay connected. Windows wouldn't tell me what was going on though. code...

No wifi 'on' 'off' hardware switch on machine
Prior to the install of Xunbuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) the machine carried MSXP. The wireless card came with the machine. The machine used a cable connection by previous owner. Connection's been working fine in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackelope and Puppy Linux. Wireless card appears to be functioning. The system scans for the network, shows that connection is established by both icon in tray and message saying that a connection is made. The card shows both green lights active. The light that indicates a connection is on and randomly flickers. Tested Firefox for connection. Firefox is not receiving anything from the system. I have got the network manager functioning enough to say that I have a 'connection' but still cannot connect to server.

Help menu in 10.04 is listed as help menu for 9.04 so don't know if applicable to 10.04 debugging. When 'troubleshooting' wireless connections, I did a *sudo lshw -C network* command on terminal. The results *do not* show 'Claimed, Unclaimed, Enabled or Disabled as help menu indicates. The line that would show that information (*-network) doesn't have 'Claimed, Unclaimed, Enabled or Disabled'. I can send image of this query. I have tried two other wifi cards with similar results, no connection.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 online today. I was using 10.04 32-bit before, and the network drivers were easy to find and install. Ubuntu did the job for me and they worked flawlessly. It was a relief I didn't need to search around.
Even though 10.10 (64bit) found the drivers for me, both ethernet and wireless, they do not seem to be working alright. I installed both, made a restart. I found that the WiFi light on my laptop stays on, even if the wireless network is turned off using either the key combination (Fn+F2), or manually turning it off.
Issues with the ethernet? I am right now using ethernet but it does not care to detect the connection. Empathy won't connect automatically as a result- says no network connection. But here I am, posting this. Evidently, there is a connection, right?
Issues with the wireless? The WiFi light stays on all the time, and it isn't able to get hang of the connection I have at home. It just won't show any wireless connections available. When I tried to connect by giving it the SSID and the encryption type and password, it didn't work. Just kept asking for the password again and again (I have checked with the router- the password is correct).
One - where is the setting so when I click into a file it opens in the same Window instead of a new one?
Two - how can I toggle the side bar on and off like Ubuntu/SUSE nautilus have?
i have an hp zv 6000 laptop. I cant get the wifi button to turn on. It sees the card has drivers loaded but because the quicklaunch will not function i cant get the thing to turn on. is there a way to force the hardware on by bypassing the buttons. Some of the button do work though. the music button brings up the media player.
My system is a dual boot with xp. buttons work with xp. wlan on in bios. if windows is not running i cant make the button work. just so you know i am kinda a noob at ubuntu. used to run redhat back in compsci days. been a while.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 5720z notebook/laptop, and got slackware 13.1 x64 installed. Everything works like a charm ( touchpad, keyboard, screenresolution ), but I a problem with the wireless 'card'. When I just installed it (as dualboot to the MS Vista it came equipped with) wicd didn't function. Took me ages to find out the standard Atheros AR5001 thing is fully supported under Linux (hence the very few topics on the card ) But still: ifconfig or iwconfig wlan0 up gave me an error 132 message, which through google I learned: hardware switch is set to off.
Anyway: There's this litte button on the first row of 'special' keys, with a blinkenlights (led ) that indicates that Wlan is on (or there is wlan activity). Under Vista, it blinks and flashes with Wlan activity, Under Linux: Nothing, Not during Boot, not during never! Under Vista, when pressing the button, the Wlan is switched off, and on: The internet connections are lost, and when switched on, network activity is restored. Attention please: It's NOT a switch, just a button. It took me some time to give up getting the Wlan going under linux, rebooted into Vista, noticed the light did flip on,.. and under Vista no problem. I rebooted in to Linux again, and voila: WORKING! Happy! Succes! Profit! Nope: the next day: nothing. I didn't press the button. I could press until forever, but under Linux: nothin. Rebooted into windows, had to switch it on, logged out, rebooted into Linux: Working again.
To cut a long story short: the button doesn't work under Linux. Since it's a ' soft ' button, can I switch it on by a command? Since it apparently switches itself off randomly ( maybe sleep, hybernate or any low power state auto switches it off ) and I can only flip it on in Vista.. not the most desireable way to work.

There are a few ' quick start ' buttons next to it ( which I don't ever use ) to start Internet,Mail ,Bluetooth), dummy buttons with leds for hdd activity, caps and scroll lock and some acer only keys with no funtion under linux either )

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running a Latitude E4300 with the Intel 4500HD integrated graphics. Lately, the display has started to flash on and off several times an hour. Usually all I have to do is move the mouse or hit a key, and the display comes back (the back light is on when this happens).
Once and awhile, my monitor goes into standby when this happens, but if I turn the LCD (a Dell 2007FP) off and back on, the display is back. This happens when using the internal LCD at 1280x800 or my external monitor hooked up via E-Dock.
I've tried a couple different monitors, and they all work fine. I have another hard drive for this machine that I have Windows 7 loaded on, and it works for hours and hours without exhibiting any video related errors.
