I have 2 PC : Big and Small. On both, there is Ubuntu Lucid. On Big, there is a WLAN PCI card from D-Link, and on Small an USB-Stick USB from TP-Link.
* On Big, the WLAN connection is performed during the boot, and is active even without opening a session (i.e. if one still on the login screnn of GDM)
* On Small, the WLAN connection is activated only AFTER opening a session.
How can i do on Small to have the same behaviour as on Big ?

I just installed 10.04 on a computer I put together, I noticed the button that allows you to switch back and forth to the 'text entry mode' on the nautilus location bar is missing. Is there a way to get this back? I found you can use CTRL+L or use gconf-editor to switch but I used that button quite a bit and want to find a way to get it back.

how to make wifi work. I'm looking for a way to turn it off to save battery life. Aspire One D255, Fn F3 toggles wifi off and on, with an indicator light and, in Win 7, an on-screen indicator. I searched for this, and all I saw was advice on how to make wifi work. Mine works just fine, I'm looking for a way to turn it off to save battery life. Here's what I mean. Aspire One D255, Fn F3 toggles wifi off and on, with an indicator light and, in Win 7, an on-screen indicator. Fn F3 doesn't work in Ubuntu, and there are times I'd like to turn the wifi off. Is there a command to do this? Or maybe something in the menus that I'm missing?

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!

I have an Acer Aspire 5720z notebook/laptop, and got slackware 13.1 x64 installed. Everything works like a charm ( touchpad, keyboard, screenresolution ), but I a problem with the wireless 'card'. When I just installed it (as dualboot to the MS Vista it came equipped with) wicd didn't function. Took me ages to find out the standard Atheros AR5001 thing is fully supported under Linux (hence the very few topics on the card ) But still: ifconfig or iwconfig wlan0 up gave me an error 132 message, which through google I learned: hardware switch is set to off.
Anyway: There's this litte button on the first row of 'special' keys, with a blinkenlights (led ) that indicates that Wlan is on (or there is wlan activity). Under Vista, it blinks and flashes with Wlan activity, Under Linux: Nothing, Not during Boot, not during never! Under Vista, when pressing the button, the Wlan is switched off, and on: The internet connections are lost, and when switched on, network activity is restored. Attention please: It's NOT a switch, just a button. It took me some time to give up getting the Wlan going under linux, rebooted into Vista, noticed the light did flip on,.. and under Vista no problem. I rebooted in to Linux again, and voila: WORKING! Happy! Succes! Profit! Nope: the next day: nothing. I didn't press the button. I could press until forever, but under Linux: nothin. Rebooted into windows, had to switch it on, logged out, rebooted into Linux: Working again.
To cut a long story short: the button doesn't work under Linux. Since it's a ' soft ' button, can I switch it on by a command? Since it apparently switches itself off randomly ( maybe sleep, hybernate or any low power state auto switches it off ) and I can only flip it on in Vista.. not the most desireable way to work.
lspci 06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
uname -a Linux nutella 2.6.33.4 #3 SMP Wed May 12 23:13:09 CDT 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2330 @ 1.60GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux slackware 13.1 x64 Acer Aspire 5720z See button:[URL]...
There are a few ' quick start ' buttons next to it ( which I don't ever use ) to start Internet,Mail ,Bluetooth), dummy buttons with leds for hdd activity, caps and scroll lock and some acer only keys with no funtion under linux either )

I turned my wifi switch off because I was on a plane, and wanted to save battery, but now Slackware isn't recognizing that it's being turned back on. I toggle the switch in XP, and the light goes from orange to blue, like normal, but no matter what I do in Slackware, the light stays orange. Wicd just tells me there are now wireless networks in range. My wireless card doesn't show up in ifconfig, but lspci shows it fine

I decided to wing it and upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 once I developed odd wireless issues (grrr) where I could only get on wireless if I booted up Ubuntu with my wifi switch DISABLED and then right away enabled it once I was logged in. The funny part is, it distinctly said 10.10 available in update manager. I get it done, power up, System - About Ubuntu - 11.04.

i'm running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with an Atheros AR5BMB5 WiFi card.
The problem i'm having is that the hardware switch to turn the WiFi on and off isn't working right. When I hit the switch to turn it off, the light doesn't turn off, and Ubuntu just disconnects from the network and searches for more WiFi networks - it doesn't say that the WiFi has been deactivated, and I don't think it is. When I hit the switch again, it finds my network and connects to it.
The lspci -v | less command gives me the following information for the WiFi:
Code:
08:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. Device 0418
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 21
[Code]....
It lists a different model of card, but it's using what I assume is the correct driver, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I've checked the card itself and it is a AR5BMB5.
I would like to fix it so the switch actually turns the WiFi off instead of just making it search for more networks (I assume it's not actually turning off), and perhaps make the light turn off as it should as well.

I have a hp zd7249cl laptop and have installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

I just installed Fedora 13 on my HP HDX 16 laptop (and accidentally corrupted my vista partition by resizing it so I'm pretty much stuck now. ^_^)
The light for the wifi toggle button constantly flashes between blue and orange (normally meaning the wifi card is on or off). Does anybody know how I can fix this?

I've had a host of problems since upgrading to 11.04 Natty Narwhal, so let's deal with these 1 at a time.
I've got a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion G60 laptop. Next to the power button is a handy wireless on/off button. This has always worked well with previous editions (9.04,through 10.10). first press toggles the wireless off, second press toggles it on.
Not so in 11.04. The toggle off works great, first time. But, it will not toggle back on. Not after any number of tries, not after restarting, not after booting into other OS's (9.10 and Vista) re-enabling it there and then booting back into Narwhal. to further complicate the issue, this feature bypass the network manager, so toggling the wireless off by the switch leaves me showing no wireless adapter in the network manager. I also restarted, switched from Unity to a Gnome session, but the issue still persists.
As my only network options are wireless, this has become a substantial inconvenience.
----
EDIT: so the network util is actually saying "wireless disabled by hardware switch". Also noticed it I enable it in 9.10, reboot to 11.04 (where I inevitably fail to re-enable it), then reboot into 9.10, it will initially be disabled. The key difference is in 9.10 I have the ability to enable wifi using the hardware button. It seems that 11.04 is remembering that wireless is disabled between boots. Is there a place it might be storing this value? If so, I may be able simply to set the value as enabled, since toggling that silly button isn't working.
-----
EDIT 2:
found this thread:"Wireless disabled by hardware switch" bug? - Natty
seems to be a similar issue. I'll be following how that one develops, too.
