Feb 22, 2010
i have an hp zv 6000 laptop. I cant get the wifi button to turn on. It sees the card has drivers loaded but because the quicklaunch will not function i cant get the thing to turn on. is there a way to force the hardware on by bypassing the buttons. Some of the button do work though. the music button brings up the media player.
My system is a dual boot with xp. buttons work with xp. wlan on in bios. if windows is not running i cant make the button work. just so you know i am kinda a noob at ubuntu. used to run redhat back in compsci days. been a while.

how to make wifi work. I'm looking for a way to turn it off to save battery life. Aspire One D255, Fn F3 toggles wifi off and on, with an indicator light and, in Win 7, an on-screen indicator. Fn F3 doesn't work in Ubuntu, and there are times I'd like to turn the wifi off. Is there a command to do this?

I searched for this, and all I saw was advice on how to make wifi work. Mine works just fine, I'm looking for a way to turn it off to save battery life. Here's what I mean. Aspire One D255, Fn F3 toggles wifi off and on, with an indicator light and, in Win 7, an on-screen indicator. Fn F3 doesn't work in Ubuntu, and there are times I'd like to turn the wifi off. Is there a command to do this? Or maybe something in the menus that I'm missing?

I have downloaded the driver installed it, and it works fine. But i can't get to turn it off. I do have the ability to unload the driver's kernel modules and the sysyem does not see my card after that. That's ok, but i'm thinking it still uses my battery power. The wifi led is always on no matter what i do. The fn+<wifi key> doesn't to anything.

I own an Acer Aspire 5552g. I have installed 2 systems on it: Windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10. Everything works fine except wifi. There is a lot of threads connected to this topic, but none has solved my problem yet. The problem occurs when I hibernate Windows and then load ubuntu - I get unable to turn wifi on. As rfkill says - it is hard blocked. It wouldn't be a problem if i had a hard switch for wifi. but I only have fn+F3 for that, which somehow fails to work in my situation.
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:~$ rfkill list
1: phy1: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
If I reboot Windows and then start ubuntu - everything's fine and working. fn+F3 turns wifi on and off as expected. I will provide some more info: when wifi's working:
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill1$ cat state
1 when it doesn't:
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill1$ cat state
2 some additional info:
Code:
igor@igor-Aspire-5552G:/$ lspci -nn

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!

For some reason my button to turn the wireless on or off turned itself off. It's orange when off and blue when on. I tried rebooting but that didn't work. I need to turn it back on to get my wireless working again.

Is it possible to have the power button emulate the press of a key? On my media centre I have XBMC running and it doesn't recognise me pressing the power button. If I press S (on the keyboard) the shutdown menu pops up.

I have installed Debian 8.0.0 64bit with KDE 4.14.2.I managed to install Skype. But the video call didn't work. Actually when I'm receiving a video call it works, but I cannot initiate a video call. Then I installed libv4l-0 package (which has been installed to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libv4l) and found here URL...) that I have to do something with this Code: Select allLD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype in order to make video calling work. I went thought some results on google but I couldn't find any hint. Probably it's very simple to do with this I cannot get.

I recently had a problem develop with my slightly more than a year old Lenovo S10 Idea book, that the only way to fix it was to do a hard drive wipe and install. Previously it was running windows, and before I decided to install ubuntu 9.10 from a cd, the wifi was working. Now I cannot get it to work, I've downloaded drivers from the disc. My means of connecting to the internet is with usually the wifi automatically detecting the signal source and then entering passwords as needed etc. How can I get it to do this again?

I have an Acer Aspire 5720z notebook/laptop, and got slackware 13.1 x64 installed. Everything works like a charm ( touchpad, keyboard, screenresolution ), but I a problem with the wireless 'card'. When I just installed it (as dualboot to the MS Vista it came equipped with) wicd didn't function. Took me ages to find out the standard Atheros AR5001 thing is fully supported under Linux (hence the very few topics on the card ) But still: ifconfig or iwconfig wlan0 up gave me an error 132 message, which through google I learned: hardware switch is set to off.
Anyway: There's this litte button on the first row of 'special' keys, with a blinkenlights (led ) that indicates that Wlan is on (or there is wlan activity). Under Vista, it blinks and flashes with Wlan activity, Under Linux: Nothing, Not during Boot, not during never! Under Vista, when pressing the button, the Wlan is switched off, and on: The internet connections are lost, and when switched on, network activity is restored. Attention please: It's NOT a switch, just a button. It took me some time to give up getting the Wlan going under linux, rebooted into Vista, noticed the light did flip on,.. and under Vista no problem. I rebooted in to Linux again, and voila: WORKING! Happy! Succes! Profit! Nope: the next day: nothing. I didn't press the button. I could press until forever, but under Linux: nothin. Rebooted into windows, had to switch it on, logged out, rebooted into Linux: Working again.
To cut a long story short: the button doesn't work under Linux. Since it's a ' soft ' button, can I switch it on by a command? Since it apparently switches itself off randomly ( maybe sleep, hybernate or any low power state auto switches it off ) and I can only flip it on in Vista.. not the most desireable way to work.

There are a few ' quick start ' buttons next to it ( which I don't ever use ) to start Internet,Mail ,Bluetooth), dummy buttons with leds for hdd activity, caps and scroll lock and some acer only keys with no funtion under linux either )

I just bought a new Dell Studio 1558 and I can't turn the wifi on when logging to my account, the wireless card is installed correctly but the button (F2) doesn't work to turn the wifi on.
[You can see the keyboard shape here]
On windows there is a program from dell that associate these keys (wifi -F2- and Eject optical drive) to their functions.
I wonder how can I achieve this under OpenSuse.

I have a hp zd7249cl laptop and have installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. The main problem I am having at the time is the wireless button will not turn on so there for I have no internet access. The switch works fine in windows, but not in ubuntu. The switch didn't work with the live cd either, but I thought it might after install. The wired card that is in the laptop is no good and quit working a couple of years ago so all I have is wireless now.

I have a Dell Latitude E6500 running Opensuse 11.3. As far as I can tell the module for my wireless card is loaded correctly and it's working:
Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i wifi
0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100
Code:
[ 556.642557] iwlagn: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link AGN driver for Linux, in-tree:d
[ 556.642560] iwlagn: Copyright(c) 2003-2010 Intel Corporation
[Code].....
The funny thing is that it works fine in a Fedora installation, which has an older kernel and older drivers, on the same laptop. The fact that the indicator light doesn't come in when the physical switch is turned on suggests it's something to do with that switch.

I just installed Fedora 13 on my HP HDX 16 laptop (and accidentally corrupted my vista partition by resizing it so I'm pretty much stuck now. ^_^)
The light for the wifi toggle button constantly flashes between blue and orange (normally meaning the wifi card is on or off). Does anybody know how I can fix this?

My laptop has an internal wireless device and a button to turn it on/off, but since it has bad reception I use an external USB wireless adapter. The problem is that if I turn the internal wireless device off using the button, it also turns the USB wireless adapter off.Is there anyway to use the killswitch (the button) only for the internal wireless device? This only started to happen in Ubuntu 10.04.
