View 9 RepliesI can't connect to the internet as the wifi hasn't worked since I reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10...It might be a hardware problem as this problem occured, when I tried to install Windows 7 but it didn't work on my computer...than I decided to reinstall Ubuntu 10.10, but than the wifi just wasn't working...but it was working before the win 7 installation and during the installation win 7 recognized my wireless connections...and even when I tried installing win 7 AGAIN it still recognized them...but every time I want to install Ubuntu 10.10...wireless just doesn't work.

I'm on 11.04, im on a macbook 6,2 i7. The wifi worked when i booted from cd but now it doesnt work once i installed.
I have an HP DV6 3143se which has a Ralink 3090 wifi card in it.the only thing that doesn't work at the moment is the Wifi. I tried installing the Linux backports module, but the trouble is that sometimes, my home wifi network is shown on the list of available networks and most often, it's not. when the network does show up, and i click on it and enter my WPA2 password, it takes ages to handshake and then it tells me that my password is wrong. the same password works in windows 7 so something's not working.
when i try to disable and re enable wireless network on the network manager applet, i get a Wireless device not ready or Network manager not running message.

i'm running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit on an Acer Aspire 3050 laptop with an Atheros AR5BMB5 WiFi card.
The problem i'm having is that the hardware switch to turn the WiFi on and off isn't working right. When I hit the switch to turn it off, the light doesn't turn off, and Ubuntu just disconnects from the network and searches for more WiFi networks - it doesn't say that the WiFi has been deactivated, and I don't think it is. When I hit the switch again, it finds my network and connects to it.
The lspci -v | less command gives me the following information for the WiFi:
Code:
08:04.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2413 802.11bg NIC (rev 01)
Subsystem: AMBIT Microsystem Corp. Device 0418
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 21
[Code]....
It lists a different model of card, but it's using what I assume is the correct driver, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I've checked the card itself and it is a AR5BMB5.
I would like to fix it so the switch actually turns the WiFi off instead of just making it search for more networks (I assume it's not actually turning off), and perhaps make the light turn off as it should as well.
The auto connect feature of NetworkManager Applet (version 0.7.997) isn't working on my system. If the WiFi connection dies, Network Manager doesn't detect that the connection has been lost and try to reestablish the connection. I have to manually click on the WiFi hotspot to reestablish the connection. This appears to be the case both while the computer is running and when I first boot it up (i.e. when booting, if the first attempt at establishing a WiFi connection doesn't succeed, Network Manager doesn't retry or try another hotspot). Is this "normal" behavior for Network Manager? If not, does anyone know a fix? Here's some more info about my system:
Computer: Dell Inspiron 1318 laptop
WiFi Chip: Broadcomm BCM4238
Kernel Version: 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64

Recently I have installed Fedora 14 on my other laptop. It's a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything worked perfectly fine, networking included, until my friend didn't accidently turned off the wireless by pressing a wireless button on the laptop. Since then the wireless on Fedora doesn't work. It does on Windows thought. I've tried restarting the laptop few times, but the wireless still doesn't want to work again.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy eeepc 900 works well in general, i am very happy with it, and mostly with lucid. But I suddenly ,3 days ago, discovered that my left click button doesn't work anymore. Could it be software related? It happened on my 700 surf for a little while, but before I could really get worked up, it had resolved itself. btw my 900 is maybe old but has not till I aquired it seen much use, I doubt it could be from overuse, but then again, you never know..

I use it as a headless server and the power button had always worked.at first, I updated from 10.04 to 10.10 and everything was working great but I decided to reinstall the os on a new HDD. then when I want to shutdown the server, I need to login with ssh and shutdown it with "halt -p", the power button doesn't do anything. I connected a monitor to the server to see what's happen on the screen but nothing... no message. nothing in the error log.I tried to add apm force_off=1 in the /etc/modules but still not working.

It would be nice if I could skip back in Nautilus too, but it doesn't work. (Alt+LeftArrow & Alt+RightArrow as keybord equivalent) Is there a possibility to use this buttons in Nautilus too?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 via the online upgrading method I had much trouble getting wireless to work but after following the instructions at .Driver/bcm43xx it burst into life, that is until I powered off and now I have to sudo modprobe b43 before the hardware button for the wifi will work and and then I am able to get online. This is for every power on session!! Once enabled it will switch on and off via the hardware button and the light is operational. Before the sudo modprobe b43 the buttonoes something as evidenced by sudo rfkill list after each press of the button. Is there any way to have the command sudo modprobe b43 inserted somewhere in the power on sequence? This was a working function on 10.10!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to install Linux on my laptop. I started with Arch but 4 hours later, I'll take anything so now I'm trying Ubuntu. It appears that the keyboard function button that corresponds to my wireless does not work, and perhaps is windows dependent?Every time I try to interact with wlan0, I get the error "Operation not possible due to RF-kill". And as I've looked around online, it has been suggested in other forums that the only way to resolve this is to reinstall windows and dual boot, so the FN key will work.
I think this is ridiculous. There must be a way to persuade the RF-kill to be turned off again, shouldn't there?I don't have a recover disk for this laptop and I don't want to go through the trouble of requested one from acer. I reformatted the whole disk while attempted to install arch.
Just bought this toshiba laptop m645-s4114 today @ bestbuy and I installed the ubuntu 11.04 successfully erasing the MS OS on it but later realized my wireless network doesn't work. I have tried and followed everything that was given on some linux ubuntu forums with no avail.
View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I boot my machine, some of the playback values in alsamixer are set to 0 and are muted, so I have no sound.
The thing is, I have tried setting these to normal levels and then run sudo alsactl store. Then, if I run sudo alsactl restore after I reboot, the sound comes back up. However, if I have alsactl restore in /etc/rc.local, it doesn't work: I still get muted sound when I reboot. I have to run sudo alsactl restore manually each time.
I have already checked whether /etc/rc.local runs at startup, and it does. Also, I know that /var/lib/alsa/asound.state contains the correct values, because when I run sudo alsactl restore, the sound returns to normal levels. So what remains is either alsactl restore doesn't work in /etc/rc/local, or something runs after it and mutes the sound.
After update to latest phonon (4.4.0-37) - with kde 4.4.1., it doesn't recognize pulseaudio anymore. I am using xine backend, but I can't find 'PulseAudio Server' device entry in phonon configuration
Is there special pulseaudio configuration so phonon will regonize it? code...
I cannot authenticate on my wireless network. it keeps asking me the WPA key (which I correctly enter everytime it asks me to). I COULD do that before rebooting. Now I can't. Nice.
What can I do? I've read somewhere that in the RC there where problems with the network applet I don't know what... can this be reconducted to that?
I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my IBM thinkpad a30p.
now everything seems to work fine, except for the wifi card (edimax ew-7708il) i have.
PCMCIA modules are loaded, but the card just doesn't appear in the network devices...
