I booted to the live distro of FC13 on my flash drive. The wireless card isnt present. Searching the internet i can only find a few posts lamenting the incompatibility.
How do i check whether the hardware is supported? The card is a DW1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card
I am loving the opensource driver as I don't have to switch to "discrete" mode in BIOS to get 3D support as I would have to with Ubuntu. (M11x has switchable graphics which is not supported by the nvidia proprietary driver for linux) I need some help with the audio though. It works. I just realized that sound is heard when the laptop is connected to an external speaker. Internal speakers still don't work. Just looking for some general guidance with regard to installing over the native Windows 7 (x64) installation on my new Alienware M11x with RHEL 5. I have considered other Linux OS's such as Ubuntu Desktop, Fedora, and Open SuSe. However, I am of the opinion that RHEL will - from the jump - most fluidly integrate with the Intel Core i7 architecture, 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M, and other components. I plan to convert my existing Windows XP installation into a VMWare image and run that as a guest on my Alienware M11x (instead of alternatively running RHEL 5 as a guest). However, I am concerned whether it will be possible for the guest (Windows) OS (or any guest OS for that matter) to recognize/use the Alienware sound/video/LAN/Bluetooth EDR/WWAN/etc. (as the drivers were designed for Windows 7).

When i press hotkey for increase or decrease brightness i see the bar increase and decrease on my screen but brigthness don't change and stay maximal. I have tested a live cd ubuntu and it's work.

I currently have windows 7 installed. There are two partitions. The OS is on one and the other one is used for data. Is there anyway this could be a problem?
The only readable error I have gotten is from suse. Said something about an unreadable file system. All of the others have just hung at some point during the live cd boot.
I have now tried live cds of the following and none have worked.
Its a stock alienware that I bought 3 years ago. The only change I have made is updating the ram, which I bought directly from dell to make sure it was compatible. The alienware is an intel core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, 160gb HD, dual sli nvidia graphics cards. not sure about the mother board, could figure it out if its necessary. Is there any reason the hardware wouldn't be supported?
This AirLink101 AWLL5088 Wireless N 150 Ultra Mini USB Adapter would work on the 11.04 os. Meaning that I can access the internet, because I don't think it has a broadcom driver but realtek one.

To sum up, my problems are:
1. When running the proprietary driver, Fedora becomes cripplingly slow.
2. When running the open-source driver, video playback is unreliable. Video players crash if maximized.
3. I cannot connect my HDMI TV to my computer.
4. When running the open-source driver, my .xsession-errors file sometimes grows explosively.
Right now I am using the open-source driver because of problem #1. Last December I was told that there were new drivers coming out "soon" that might help. Does anyone know if anything has changed since then? Are there new drivers that should work? If not: Can I improve compatibility by changing to another version of Linux? Either upgrading to Fedora 14, downgrading to Fedora 12 or trying another distribution?

I created two EXT3 partitions (one for /boot and the other for /) and alinux swap partition after leaving 500 GB for my C drive on the HDD. I then booted into linux using the install ISO burned onto a CD. I can see the menu where I get the option to install/run Ubuntu and the option to install in text mode, but when I go ahead,I get the following errors Install Errors After these messages, the monitor goes blank and nothing happens.
My new Alienware M17X-R2 notebook freezes when it's working on battery power and the AC adapter is then plugged in. If I do that while Ubuntu isn't running -- while the computer is booting, for instance --, then it doesn't freeze, so the problem must be with Ubuntu. By the way, I also experience freezing sometimes when booting, but that is linked with plymouth and fsck not wanting to coexist and, therefore, probably unrelated with the other issue.

I am having issues getting a 32-bit environment to run something on my computer. Most people think this is a lame game, but I rather enjoy it and would like to continue playing it on this computer. I am running F11 x86_64 on an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+ Black Edition (OC'd at 3.4 in case anyone is wondering). I TRIED running yum to get the shared library referenced in the following message, but it gave conflicts on installation. Is there a way around this, such as installing a separate environment directory for just this game? Or is it just a lost cause?

The new problem is highlighted in the terminal output. I've searched the web for this issue, and it seems to be caused by an older lib included with glibc.i586, though I don't know how to verify or correct this. I tried a lot of things before finding this list.
How's the X2 in terms of compatibility with F12. I see some deals that tempt me to pick up a cheap small desktop and those desktops use that AMD chip (along side an ATI Radeon) I prefer sticking with intel and maybe build my own, but I am curious about how AMD holds up in performance and/or compatibility with Fedora

I have no experience with anything but standard Wine, and I haven't even used that in quite some time. Crossover and Cedega are both built off of the Wine codebase, and they both cost money. can POL do everything that wine can do? in other words, do i need to install them both or POL will do good alone?
The title pretty much says it all. I installed 10.04 on my m17x. I have sound from the laptop speakers, but when I plug in the headphone jack, it all goes quiet.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy alienware laptop doesn't boot sometimes to the login screen. It doesn't move on from kubuntu screen (the one with the animated dots). This happens only sometimes. When this happens if I press the power button once,the dots start moving and machine shuts down. I also have a nvidia card and don't know if the bug has been sorted where it doesn't show proper resolution during the kubuntu dots screen.

I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!

I have an e-machines flat pannel monitor and I often find it's not supported. That, or I have to use 800x600 resolution. I'm on XP right now on a compaq and I have to settle with 1024x768. Which is stretched out. I also use a linksys USB adapter for internet and it must work with-out effort on my part. It works with the latest versions of ubuntu, puppy, Damn Small Linux and a few others. Are there any distros that might work for me? And by the way, I get the correct resolution (I can't remember what it is) with my e-machines W3052.
