Slackware :: Alienware Lighting Controls - Alienfx
May 28, 2010
Just thought I'd give you guys a heads up incase you wern't aware, someone over on the ubuntu forums wrote a program in java that changes the lights on your alienware laptop. It may work with the desktop's as well.
I'll just post a link to my build script and you can follow it from there: [url]
Also, if you build HAL against libsmbios (from Dell) You'll get some bonus keys working as well, such as the eject key.
I love this new alienware M15X... It's a freaking beast of a laptop with 2 quad i7core procs....

Today I installed Maverick on my new MBP. I followed the instruction in this Help page:Maverick but seem to be having trouble getting the keyboard backlight hotkeys to work (LCD Brightness, Media keys, and Sound keys appear to work correctly).

I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!
Below is my order list from Dell:

I have xine in gnome on Slackware 13.1. On every other distro I've used, even when xine is in fullscreen, I can still hit 'g' to pop up the controls. But in slackware 13.1, fullscreen hides the controls. Anybody know if it's some strange way the slackware package was built? Or is a xine version thing where this behavior was changed? Or something with gnome? I don't recall the other versions of xine I had on other distros, but even Mint 8 that I have installed right now shows me the controls even in fullscreen.

Everytime my system boots, it displays 4 tux penguins above the text... however; on one of my older systems, it only displays 1 tux penguin... and on another it displays 2...So each time I boot, I have curiosity about this trivial issue, and now I can't take it anymore; I need to find out: what controls the number of tuxes when booting?

I've upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and now the backlighting is completely gone. I actually am forced to shine a very bright flashlight on the screen just to write this. I've gotten xubuntu to install with 11.04 fine but I don't really like it and I've noticed that weather I use a USB, DVD, or upgrade I have no backlighting with regular ubuntu. Oh and it also puzzles me because I upgraded to the alpha 2 a few weeks ago and everything was fine but now the beta 1 is giving me problems.. I really don't want to reinstall and lose all of my stuff!

I don't know why, but the Lighting extension for Thunderbird has been a complete PINA. The package manager version didn't work (Tbird claimed it was incompatible), and I had to get a working plugin from some obscure section of some obscure unofficial site in order to get a version that was compatible with my Thunderbird. I don't remember where I got it or why the official version doesn't work, but somehow I got it working.
I recently updated my system (including tbird) using apt-get update, and the lighting extension is no longer compatible (again). The "find update" option in Tbird finds one, but it isn't compatible either. Where do I go to get a Tbird plug-in that actually works?
I'm using Tbird 3.1.8 on 64 Bit 10.04.

I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu in either text mode or default graphical mode.
Here's my configuration:
1) Intel core i7-960 (8MB L3 cache, 3.2 GHz Bloomfield)
2) 6 GB triple Channel DDR3 (1333 Mhz, 3x2GB)
3) 2x 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity (Crossfire)
4) 1 16X BD-ROM/CD/DVD/RW 1 24X CD/DVD/RW
[code]...
I created two EXT3 partitions (one for /boot and the other for /) and alinux swap partition after leaving 500 GB for my C drive on the HDD. I then booted into linux using the install ISO burned onto a CD. I can see the menu where I get the option to install/run Ubuntu and the option to install in text mode, but when I go ahead,I get the following errors Install Errors After these messages, the monitor goes blank and nothing happens.

My new Alienware M17X-R2 notebook freezes when it's working on battery power and the AC adapter is then plugged in. If I do that while Ubuntu isn't running -- while the computer is booting, for instance --, then it doesn't freeze, so the problem must be with Ubuntu. By the way, I also experience freezing sometimes when booting, but that is linked with plymouth and fsck not wanting to coexist and, therefore, probably unrelated with the other issue.

I currently have windows 7 installed. There are two partitions. The OS is on one and the other one is used for data. Is there anyway this could be a problem?
The only readable error I have gotten is from suse. Said something about an unreadable file system. All of the others have just hung at some point during the live cd boot.
I have now tried live cds of the following and none have worked.
Its a stock alienware that I bought 3 years ago. The only change I have made is updating the ram, which I bought directly from dell to make sure it was compatible. The alienware is an intel core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, 160gb HD, dual sli nvidia graphics cards. not sure about the mother board, could figure it out if its necessary. Is there any reason the hardware wouldn't be supported?

Just looking for some general guidance with regard to installing over the native Windows 7 (x64) installation on my new Alienware M11x with RHEL 5. I have considered other Linux OS's such as Ubuntu Desktop, Fedora, and Open SuSe. However, I am of the opinion that RHEL will - from the jump - most fluidly integrate with the Intel Core i7 architecture, 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M, and other components. I plan to convert my existing Windows XP installation into a VMWare image and run that as a guest on my Alienware M11x (instead of alternatively running RHEL 5 as a guest). However, I am concerned whether it will be possible for the guest (Windows) OS (or any guest OS for that matter) to recognize/use the Alienware sound/video/LAN/Bluetooth EDR/WWAN/etc. (as the drivers were designed for Windows 7).

I am loving the opensource driver as I don't have to switch to "discrete" mode in BIOS to get 3D support as I would have to with Ubuntu. (M11x has switchable graphics which is not supported by the nvidia proprietary driver for linux) I need some help with the audio though. In case of Ubuntu 10.04 I had to download and install realtek HD drivers for linux from
[url]
I cannot do the same for Fedora as I get compile errors.
Quote:
This is after I run the install script as specified in the "Readme".
Here is my system config .
It works. I just realized that sound is heard when the laptop is connected to an external speaker. Internal speakers still don't work. I don't know how to fix this (probably fix the switches somewhere another mixer gui or via command line) and I don't really care as the internal speakers aren't that great and I almost never use them.

My alienware laptop doesn't boot sometimes to the login screen. It doesn't move on from kubuntu screen (the one with the animated dots). This happens only sometimes. When this happens if I press the power button once, the dots start moving and machine shuts down. I also have a nvidia card and don't know if the bug has been sorted where it doesn't show proper resolution during the kubuntu dots screen.

I got a relatively new system and I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu in either text mode or default graphical mode.
Here's my configuration:
1) Intel core i7-960 (8MB L3 cache, 3.2 GHz Bloomfield)
2) 6 GB triple Channel DDR3 (1333 Mhz, 3x2GB)
3) 2x 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity (Crossfire)

5) Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium
6) Alienware Liquid Cooling
7) Alienware MM Keyboard and Tact-X Mouse
650 GB (7200 RPM) Primary HDD 650 GB (7200 RPM) Secondary HDD (Raid-0)
I created two EXT3 partitions (one for /boot and the other for /) and alinux swap partition after leaving 500 GB for my C drive on the HDD.
I then booted into linux using the install ISO burned onto a CD. I can see the menu where I get the option to install/run Ubuntu and the option to install in text mode, but when I go ahead, both my monitors stop receiving any input at all and go to sleep!

It's hard to tell for sure if this is related to a recent update or not. There've been a bunch for sure In any of the GUI the title bars, there used to be 3 boxes on the right end. Minimize, Maximize and close. They're gone. Totally vanished for all users.
L click on the icon near the left end of the title bar or a R click anywhere on the title bar brings up a menu with such options (and others), but I sure do miss my 'close' button!

I took the courage yesterday to install ubuntu 9.10. Internet was working absolutely fine (wireless), but brightness controls were not working (they still don't). So I went to this page https://wiki.ubuntu.co/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting, and ran following command(s) killall gnome-settings-daemon gnome-power-manager Now since then I cant get the internet working, and cant see the wifi connection on task bar. I have restarted the laptop but no avail.
PS: any help on how I can reduce the brightness of monitor. I am using SONY VIAO VGN FZ38M, with Nvidia 8400M GT. I have tried several threads and tried all sorts of things, like xbacklight, or somthing to do with sudo .VGA/LCD/brightness.etc.

I upgraded from Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.4. After the upgrade I noticed the entire title barding the window controls to minimize/maximize/close a window disappeared.Resizing/moving a window is not possible either. At first I thought something went wrong with the upgrade, so I did a full reinstall, but using the same home dir (sda5 mounted to /home). The problem remains.
I can temporarily fix it by changing the visual effects to normal or extra, but each time I restart I have to do this again. The controls appear at the right side, opposed to the left side which I would have expected from this release.I realized that this must be something in my home dir, so I created a new user. For this new user, everything appears as expected, so it's most likely some configuration file left from 8.10 which 9.4 doesn't like

I am considering installing Ubuntu on one of my desktop pcs used by my daughter. It's currently running Windows 7 32bit in a LUA, but is not as stable as I'd like. I am using Cyber patrol as a parental control system - which could be causing some of the instability. Is there any Parental Control software available for Unbuntu?

I can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there. Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 - all updated as of 1/2/2009 Firefox 3.5.6 On a Lenovo Thinkpad R400
It has never worked. About to pull my hair out and/or reinstall Ubuntu Completely since no one else seems to have to problem.

a widow with 4 kids - 2 of whom have severe depression & signs that one may be suicidal and is taking interst in some dark garbage on the net. Overall still a pretty good kid, but he surely doesn't need help online to get further in a hole. The 15 year old boy is highly intelligent (whole family actually) and knows how to get around software parental controls with peer to peer, live disks, etc. There are several PCs - both windows and mac, and an X-box.
I want to set up the household with a router or similar solution that is smarter than the kid and his friends. I figure protecting the network is the most tamper proof, all-encompassing way to go. In the short term, I really want to lock that home net solid, while still allowing mom to do her facebook and the oldest to use the web for schoolwork. Dlink Securespot technology seems to be the best overall solution I have found so far. If there is something better, I'm hoping someone here can steer me to it.
