i have an alienware M11X and i have installed fedora. I have a problem with brightness. When i press hotkey for increase or decrease brightness i see the bar increase and decrease on my screen but brigthness don't change and stay maximal. I have tested a live cd ubuntu and it's work.

I have installed kmilo, modprobed nvram and added line: KERNEL=="nvram", MODE="0666", GROUP="nvram" to 91-permissions.rules. I used command addgroup nvram and add me ( user tomasso ) to nvram group. Kmilo works fine but I am not able to change brightness of my laptop in kpowersave or by using fn key on my laptop keyboard. I am in powerdev group too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd been trying to get into Linux before I bought it so I figured that I would try to get it onto my new Mac so that I could use it wherever I am. I decided to try Debian Lenny 5.0.3 a whirl after reading about all the different distros available. I've successfully installed it and I can get to it with rEFIt, and I have quite a few things working such as the video drivers and wifi. However, I've had trouble getting it to a level where it'd be usable away from home. Here are the main problems I'm worried about:
1) I installed pommed but I still can't use the brightness keys to change the screen brightness. I'm not sure if there's some other workaround for this?
2) I tried some recommended power management packages (gnome-power-manager) but it doesn't seem to be accessible or functional right now. I don't have any way to control it or get to it that is obvious to me. Is an icon or anything supposed to appear on the task bar when you install or what? Getting some sort of power management on here is important because it gets really lousy battery life otherwise.
3) Being a Macbook, there's no right-click button. Multitouch would be really nice (two-finger scrolling!) but I'd be OK with ANY way to right-click with the touchpad. I have a wireless USB keyboard/mouse combo that works at home at least . . . right out of the box too!
4) I've seen some packages called the Mactel PPA, but they are made for Ubuntu. Since Debian and Ubuntu are so similar, is there any way to make those work on Lenny? I think that if I got those to work, I could fix some of the problems above. Or do I have to install Ubuntu?
5) I just noticed that the sound doesn't seem to work yet either.
I have installed Fedora12 on Dell Inspiron laptop. Here are my key details of my laptop.

I'm having trouble locating a way to adjust the screen brightness on fc10... It is only possible to use the monitor's control for now.Yeah my monitor make an annoying whining noise unless you turn it on 100% brightness, but that hurts my eyes.It is so crazy that they didn't put a brightness control in! ( or rather they destroyed working ones of year past, Why? )

Firstly, I had a little problem with nvidia drivers and wireless because I installed from a normal CD, but then I repaired it installing drivers from the web page and updating the system. However, I continue having a problem with changing brightness even with the Fn buttons or with the gnome configuration control. It works. I just realized that sound is heard when the laptop is connected to an external speaker. Internal speakers still don't work. I have an issue with Debian 7.8 (wheezy) on my laptop. I've had to reinstall Debian on my laptop and since then I've had issues getting brightness controls to work properly.

I have installed Xubuntu 11.04 on a HP Probook 4510S and the FN Keys of brightness only works when I on the login screen (gdm). Until I enter to my desktop the FN Keys stop Working. This is a XFCE Issue? I have another Laptop, a IBM THinkpad X40, with the same Xubuntu 11.04 and the FN Keys works perfect! Even the keyboard light Works! I think this is a ACPI related problem, I google it the problem with out a specific issue like this. The only thing that I can do it is use of xbacklight when I'm on my session.

I have acer Aspire 5742 with mint 9 {64/32 bit both} installed.. I cannot adjust brightness of my laptop in any of them.. The shortcut keys are working fine as increasing or decreasing through keys show icon increasing or decreasing brightness but it is not affecting brightness in anyway.

The brightness controls have stumped me though. The screen is on full bright and the brightness controls (FN+F5 & FN+F6) make the applet display change but the actual screen brightness does not change. I have also tried the brightness applet in the panel and that also has no effect on actual screen brightness.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with the brightness control on my sony vaio laptop, at virst when i upgraded the driver for the VGA card the whole screen went blank, I had to port a bin file from windows and write my own EDID file to get it to work (nVidia GT 230M), but I am having problems with the brightness, although ubuntu does read the input from the keys (FN+...), the brightness refuses to change, adding the brightness applet to the taskbar does not work either. I really need to be able to change my brightness because the battery usage is off the charts.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus P50IJ-X2 and in lucid the backlight cannot be adjusted. The panel app doesnt work, when I click on it and try to adjust the slider it just disappears. When I reopen it the slider is at the top left corner of the screen.
The function keys seem to be detected alright, but when I press them I get the notification that the brightness is going down but nothing happens. Also after the first press the notification gets extremely laggy. If I press the brightness keys again it takes 30 seconds or more for the notification to show up. Also after the first press my volume function keys have the same behaviour in the notification area as the function keys.
Also messing with the controls in the power settings doesn't do anything. The strange thing is all of this worked perfectly in Karmic. The function keys, auto dimming, everything just worked out of the box. I have no idea where to start trouble shooting this so can anyone give me some direction?

Today I installed debian-8.1.0-amd64 on my older Samsung Laptop (Model r560). The installation without a desktop environment worked fine and the system booted without any problems into the virtual console. There was however one problem: when I was away from keyboard for some time, the screen turned black and when I came back and hit a button to wake the system up, the laptop immediately restarted. Later I installed the gnome desktop environment. This also worked fine.
But whenever I try to change the screen brightness in the gnome-shell, my system immediately restarts and successive attempts to boot debian fail. Some time later and after countless attempts to boot debian, it finally does boot again. By "debian fails to boot" i mean the following: The initial ram disk is loaded and fschk runs. Usually the system suddenly reboots at this point. SOmetimes, however, the video mode changes, the console font is changed and some services are getting started, but then at some point the system also restarts. I don't reach the point where a login prompt appears, or the graphical environment starts up.
Assuming, it has something to do with buggy acpi implementation of my hardware, I tried the following:
I tried to disable acpi completely by using the kernel parameter "acpi=off". This doesn't work and causes the kernel to hang
I tried to start debian without using a GUI using the single parameter. This also didn't work.
acpi_backlight=vendor also did not fix the problem.
Every once in a while my laptop screen gets stuck on the lowest brightness setting. I go to the brightness setting, and it tells me it is on the highest setting. When I reset my settings, nothing happens. And I notice this usually happens after I have put the laptop in suspend mode.

For volume it's ok (fn+f11/f12), and if I go in the system settings I c an change manually the brightness (I use kde so there is a bar with which change it). But when I'm outside and the screen brightness is low I found difficult to find the menu settings and the hardware buttons would be better.I've tried adding to the kernel the "acpi_osi=" command but doesn't work.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi had slackware 13.0 on my dell vostro 1320 and it was all good, but since the upgrade to 13.1 i cannot change the screen brightness with ctrl+up and ctrl+down keys..i'm not even sure how to start with this problem. from what i understand these keys 'call' a bios function...? so that would mean that some kernel module is not being loaded?or has the desktop environment lost the key mappings and that is causing my trouble?

I also have a visual impairment which makes it that my eyes take a very long time to adjust to darker situations. I need to be able to easily dim my screen so that using my computer doesn't keep me awake as much and doesn't prevent me from doing other stuff.
I will accept both a hotkey based solution "like on most laptop" as a timed one. My main monitor lacks simple brightness/contrast controls. f.lux doesn't suit my needs, since it only changes the screen's color temperature. I'd like the solution to work regardless of the make and model of the video card involved. Wearing sunglasses is impractical, since they make it hard to interact with objects around my computer.
I bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.
I know there should be some way to change brightness and contrast in Totem, but I dont think I can find it there.
