Fedora :: Fiddlesticks - Updating KDE Killed GUI

Feb 25, 2010

Earlier today I was simply on my laptop watching videos, I finish, shut my PC down. I reboot hours later only to get greeted by the Fedora Boot Splash Screen and shortly after nothing but blackness, no login screen or nothing, I see the mouse cursor shortly after the boot splash for 2 seconds then it disappears. I made no recent changes to any files besides applying some updates via the package manager, I had to recently reformat due to a self-blunder and lost crucial data, now a week has passed and I've managed to "rebuild" my data loss back up. Now this is hindering my college course work which is done online.

Fedora :: Upgrade To F 11 Killed Screenlets?

Dec 27, 2009

I had screenlets working Just Fine on F 10, but it hit EOL so I used preupgrade to move to F 11. Now, I can't get them working no matter what I do. If I try to run screenlets-manager from a terminal I get this message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/screenlets-manager/screenlets-manager.py", line 28, in <module>
import screenlets
ImportError: No module named screenlets

And, I can't reinstall them because they require python-dateutil which doesn't seem to have a version for F 11. I even tried downloading the tarball and running setup.py, but it crashed because it tries to import a module that doesn't exist.

Fedora :: Yum Update Killed Computer / What To Do?

Jun 10, 2011

I have F15 64 on my laptop, it's been running relatively well, today I decided to do a yum update. There were about 20 updates, nothing major from what I saw, NetworkManger stuff etc. Everything goes well, until the end when I get some error (no I don't recall what it was, yes I should've written it down, and no I don't need a lecture about this) so I manually reboot the computer. And I boot to a black screen, Oh what joy of using Fedora. I edit grub to try and get in with runlevel 3, but encounter an error "Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init" then a few lines down it's "panic occured, switching back to text console /sbin/init:error while loading shared libraries /lib64.libgcc_s.so.1: invalid ELF header"

I'm very frustrated, this comes right on the heels of pre upgrade forcing me to do a complete fresh install of F15. I'm honestly one error away from moving to another distro (Fedora is my first)

Fedora Installation :: Additional Firmware Required Killed F12?

Nov 22, 2009

While doing some basic tweaks, nautilus, panel, display etc I got a pop-up: Additional Firmware Required "to make hardware in this computer function correctly". No more detail than that. Like signing a blank check so I said "go for it". When I rebooted the display was hosed. Like the refresh rate was wrong. So off to xorg.conf to fix it. There is no xorg.conf. After four hours of searching forums and google I gave up and reinstalled (only an hour). This time I made a backup (cp -a) before letting F12 fix the non-existent problem. Tried again very carefully to be sure that what killed the display was the additional firmware. True. That kills my display. Only problem is the backup cp -a when copied back in would boot but would not let me log in!? I could boot "single" change the password, but it said that was already the password.

for me F12 is a "one-day-distro". I have multiple partitions with Ubuntu, Mandriva, SuSE, Slitaz ... My first Linux was Fedora Core 4 and I will try the next Fedora release. For now back to Ubuntu 9.04. I'm still testing 9.10. My graphics is on-board Intel. I think it's 965G chipset. This is a Dell E520N. How would I tell what not to do that firmware addition?

Fedora :: Latest Udev Update Killed System?

I ran update on my ASUS N51Vf laptop yesterday and among the updates there was one for udev. After installing it udev refuses to start at all saying: "iTCO_wdt: unexpected close, not stopping watchdog". Then I get to login but not for long: after several seconds either system reboots instantly or it hangs shutting down display. Is there any way to rollback udev update somehow considering I can't even login into system?

Fedora Hardware :: Latest Kernel Killed WIFI ( Atheros )?

Feb 4, 2010

Last night I installed F12 x86_64 from a liveUSB in my laptop with Atheros wireless. During the install process and after the first boot I was able to surf the web connected to the wireless network (signal was good and all). After I updated the whole system, however, the wireless network is no longer available (Network Manager does not even show the Wireless interface or the network list).

Obviously a laptop without wireless is mostly worthless. What am I supposed to do to get my (perfectly working*) wireless network back?

Fedora Installation :: Installing On New Disk But Killed Old Install Of Fc8 On Another Disk

Mar 15, 2009

I have xp/fc8 on an older ide drive and just installed a new sata 1T and planned to put fc10 on it but in the process I killed my fc8 installation. I told the installer that the other disks were off limits but it was somewhat confusing at the bootloader page. So, I suspect that I told it boot off the fc8 disk. If that is the case is there a way to restore the fc8 install by somehow rescuing the /boot partition on the fc8 disk?

Fedora :: Updating From F10 To 12?

Jan 9, 2010

I have been trying to update from Fedora 10 to a newer version, when I try the auto update thing that pops up occasionally it says newer version available and lists Fedora 11, when I click on the preinstall which I thought was some info on it iyt starts trying to update to Fedora 12. I posted about this earlier (I can not even find the thread any more) and an administrator pointed me to a wiki which stated there is no way to get from 10 to 12. My question is how do I even get to 11, when I tried the preinstall the trouble I ran into was no space in /boot. I tried to remove other installs and when I went to the preinstall again it froze and I waited an hour then switched off the machine. Upon rebooting I got a message missing file and could not boot at all so i reinstalled Fedora 10. Now I am stuck as I tried a yum install as another suggested and could not get repository, and I had a working internet connection. I also seen in your list of laptops that work my laptop works but has some problems with internet. I can not use wireless, in reality I occasionally can use wireless, what I can always use is my sprint cdma broadband card, will I lose this if I try to upgrade, would I be best to try and burn an iso image and if so is there any way to figure out if it has cdma support?

Fedora :: Updating A System That Got No Internet?

Mar 2, 2010

I have a number of systems with Fedora on them, they are connected to a network but are not allowed to connect to the internet. So I am trying to find a solution to patch these systems in a simple way.My solution which i thought of, however, still having a problem with is as follows:

1- Download the files from the "repodata" (e.g. for "update" repository) using a machine that is connected to the internet.

2- Copy these files(e.g. using flash drive) to one on of these Fedora systems into the /var/cache/yum/i386/12/updates (or /var/cache/yum/updates for older versions).

3- Run "yum -C check-update" (-C so it will not try to update and will use the local files). (I am having a problem at this step and I get this message "no such table: packages", the solution that i found on the internet suggested cleaning the cache which is not what i want to do!).

4- After getting the list of needed files I will parse the primary.xml.gz file and grab the actual file names then append the base URL to them and save it into a file.

5- take that file to the online machine and run wget to grab all needed patches.

6- Take the files back to the system and put them in (i think /var/cache/yum/i386/12/updates/packages/) and run "yum -C update" However, now i am having a problem with step 3 and also not sure if step 6 is correct.

So does any of you guys know how to solve this, or if there is a better or easier way to do this??* Keep in mind that those machines are not allowed to connect to the internet or even connect to another machine that is connected, but we still need to patch them and keep them secure.

Fedora :: Crash While Updating F12x86_64 KDE

May 22, 2010

I have a crash that occurred after first install while updating. The update was 1.2GB Had to reboot 5 times to complete the update downloading process. Much of what I read suggests KDE, xorg and qemu as part of what is causing the crash, but I haven't found a similar issue. After the update completed installation the crashes were less severe but still occur when updating.

Code:
yum update
The latest crash occurred after yum update and left a large amount of information in konsole. It disables wireless networking so not sure how the bug is related. During the first yum update I had to reboot the system to get full functionality back. After the first update I just had to wait for system to return to normal.

Fedora Installation :: Updating From F10 To F13 Via Preupgrade?

Aug 21, 2010

I have downloaded all packages and prepared to update my laptop (Lenovo 3000 N200, F10 x86_64) from F10 to F13 via preupgrade. Everything works fine, until I reboot and go into the upgrade process.

The problem is at the screen which configs NetworkManager. It shows only two interfaces, eth0 and wlan0, but I use a 3G dongle to connect to the internet. I tried feeding random values for the fields, but it does not allow to go beyond without configuring NetworkManager first.

can I work around the upgrade process without configuring NetworkManager? ie. can I do that manually after installing the upgrade?

Fedora :: TeXLive Not Updating Due To Missing Dependency

Nov 27, 2009

I (or rather, the Yum auto-update) try to update the TeXLive on my FC11 machine but the update fails due to 'missing dependency', spitting out

Missing Dependency: libpoppler.so.4()(64bit) is needed by package texlive-2007-46.fc11.x86_64 (updates)

And strangely now (perhaps for a combination of reasons) I cannot use my auctex. I would like to finish this update anyway, and tried to find libpoppler.so.4 separately, which I haven't yet been able to locate. Poppler itself is installed and updated, and I do see libpoppler.so.5 in my system. So where would I find libpoppler.so.4 on its own? Or should I perhaps downgrade poppler?
