I recently upgraded Fedora 9 to Fedora 10 on a triple boot system (Fedora 9, Win XP and Ubuntu 8.04). The upgrade seemed to run fine until rewriting the boot loader, which failed. The old Fedora 9 entries remained. The Fedora 10 installation is found by Supergrub but attempting to boot generates the error:
Error 15: File not found
I installed fedora 12 as second os along with ulimtate vista on 64 bit machine.
I was able finish the install and boot to fedora first time. but after updating the software , i am unable to boot into fedora but am able to boot in to vista.
I am using a HP Pavilion HDX9000 notebook series. it has 2 100gb hdd. vista is on c and fedora is on d. boot info was written to MBR on C drive.
I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 7. I installed wubi and all worked fine until I ran some ubuntu updates. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem. Today I updated from 10.10 to 11.04 and it looks really cool. However, I also have Windows 7 on a different partition. When I restarted after I updated, GRUB looked different. Also, when I tried to boot to Windows 7, the screen would go blank (like it was restarting) and it would just bring me up to the GRUB menu again. I really need to get back onto Windows 7.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was using dual boot (windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10) and it was going well. Couple of days ago I updated to Ubuntu 11.04 and everything was OK. Yesterday I cought some virus in windows, installed Microsoft security essentials which asked to update Windows. After update, dual boot is gone. It boots to windows directly with no option to choose between OS.

I have Ubuntu dual booted on the laptop I'm on, with Windows 7. I'm currently running 10.10. Is it safe to update Ubuntu to the latest version, despite it being on a dual boot? I'm not sure how it would work, but I imagine it'd be fine...I just wanted to double check first.

Now when i choose the newer kernel, booting stops with a blinking cursor but i can boot and logged in on the older kernel. i even add 'nomodeset' and pressed escaped key but to no avail. Actually just when gdm is about to be loaded, i think it crashed.
Ok, so I just finished correcting my driver issue with my wireless card when I'm struck with another problem....after gaining access to the net and updating my packages, ubuntu fails to boot up. It freezes at the boot screen where it runs the 5 orange dots with the ubuntu logo.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded all packages and prepared to update my laptop (Lenovo 3000 N200, F10 x86_64) from F10 to F13 via preupgrade. Everything works fine, until I reboot and go into the upgrade process.
The problem is at the screen which configs NetworkManager. It shows only two interfaces, eth0 and wlan0, but I use a 3G dongle to connect to the internet. I tried feeding random values for the fields, but it does not allow to go beyond without configuring NetworkManager first.
can I work around the upgrade process without configuring NetworkManager? ie. can I do that manually after installing the upgrade?
I'm running kernel-2..32.12 from updates-testing. I have a Broadcom 4312 wireless card, how do I upgrade the drivers so they work with this kernel? There isn't undated versions of broadcom-wl & kmod-wl in updates-testing.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI got a problem while updating KDE from 4.1.2 to 4.2. In our college we can't download more than 20MB officially. So I'm unable to get kdegames which is 32MB from Konsole so I downlaoded it using proxy and I copied it into the /var/cache/yum/updates/packages/ folder and now using this command (yum groupinstall 'KDE (K Desktop Environment)').
I tried to update to KDE 4.2 using Konsole but it is showing:

6:kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386: failure: kdegames-4.2.0-1.fc10.i386.rpm from updates: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
And even by double-clicking the KDEgames rpm file I'm unable to install it is saying GPG (I'm not sure GPG or not, start with G i think) Key missing so it is taking too much time and not doing anything.
I've some problems upgrading to version 10 from version 8. My workstation is certified by RedHat. It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... I've tried to install beta version 11 but after one hour I get a error messages due at a bug

View 2 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the Fedora live dvd iso file, burned it to a dvd. I was wondering if I forgot to do something or did I do something wrong. When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.
View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I ran an "Online update". One package came up with an update available. Quite honestly, I didn't even take note of which package it was. Anyway, I applied the update patch. After that my computer wouldn't boot. Grub ran normally, and some of the drivers, and such would load, but just about the time when kdm would come up, all I get is a blank screen. Monitor says "No Signal". I have to manually restart.
I managed to boot into failsafe mode, log in as root, and then run kdm from the console. That way I can login. However, my computer is very, very slow running failsafe mode. how I can get it back to normal? also, is there any way to check the history of updates?
So I tried installing the nvidia drivers for my GeForce 330M using Jockey after I first installed 10.10, but it did not make it so my desktop was not bigger than my screen. So, I blacklisted nouveau by creating a text file which had in it:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
Then I saved the file as disable-nouveau.conf, then chown(ed) it to be owned by root, and moved it to /etc/modprobe.d/
I then installed the driver for my nvidia card, and everything worked perfectly. But after installing the updates listed in the update manager, my computer won't even boot to the GUI desktop, it just hangs. I can still access the command line, but when press <ctrl-alt-F7>.
All I see is this:

I was updating slackware-current via slackpkg and while it was downloading/installing latest kernel (and other apps) my battery went off and now the system can't boot. I was thinking to boot through a live cd and through chroot command to re-install all the new packages. Would it work?

I made some changes to the disk configuration, involving the addition of a dmraid-controllable fakeRAID card (SiL 3124 I think) and creating a RAID 0 array out of the two drives connected to the motherboard itself (Intel ICH7R). Otherwise the machine's configuration is identical to the way it was when running F10. My problem is thus: when I boot from the installation DVD (64-bit), the boot process doesn't make it even to anaconda. Here is the error I get, right after md devices are autoconfigured:

I have always used apt-get to update the system. Yesterday, I was doing some tests and one of them was to try to update the system using the aptitude command, instead. I ran aptitude update and then aptitude safe-ugrade. I thought that wouldn't be a problem, but I was wrong. This morning I found the computer just can't boot.

I have Squeeze in another partition on that computer. I can access the system through the terminal (the graphic is screwed). Is it possible to try my Lenny from this partition? If not, I also have a live cd for Squeeze. Right now I'm on another computer.
Yesterday I updated openSuse 11.3 on my laptop. Kernel update from 2.6.34.4-0.1... to 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop was included. Yast performed fine and at the end it stated to reboot for using the new Kernel. So I did, but what a bad surprise!! Normally the Grub menu should have been updated, but not this time. Fortunately I know how to handle this, but not all users will be able to resolve this problem, so here's what to do if this happens to you: You will run into the Text console saying: Press any button to continue... Before doing this write down on a piece of paper the text lines visible on the screen, starting with:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi....... resume=/dev/disk........
or whatever it reads for your system. You will need this info to edit the menu and succeed to boot. Now press any key and you will get the Grub menu. The standard option will be highlighted. press "e" to edit that option. Next you will see the Grub menu lines
First press key "o" to add a new line, select it by arrow down, press "e" to edit the line. (In my case it was not possible to edit the full original line, but only the added options like vag=0x317) Enter the line you wrote down, but change the kernel's version number to the new one Should look similar like:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi.......
(it works if you only use the part before "resume=/dev/disk....") After finishing hit Enter and you will turn bach to the Grub menu lines. Now move with the up/down arrow key to the old line, press "d" to remove the old line. Next move to the line with "initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop", press "e" and edit the line so that it reads: initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop press Enter to move back to the Grub menu lines. Now press "b" to boot. After booting log in, open your file manager as root, browse to /boot/grub and open the menu.lst file to edit and change the kernel old version numbers to the new one. Save it and next time it your machine will boot normally again.
Windows won't boot on Grub after I just updated Ubuntu. I tried to follow the solutions to other people who have had similar problems, but I can't get them to work for me. I am assuming you will want to see this code...
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion DV 6500 laptop running Windows 7 and Ubuntu (via Wubi). I just updated Ubuntu to 10.10 from 10.04. After restoring the Windows bootloader (which I need to do every time Grub gets updated), I can no longer boot up Ubuntu. When I select it from the bootloader, it gives me a couple of errors, the final one being: Error: File not found And then reboots the system automatically.

I installed Ubuntu server, after that i proceeded to update it.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo reboot
After the reboot it just boots into a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I can boot into recovery mode if i hold down shift and i tried to follow these instructions for repairing GRUB.

I had XP installed first then i installed openSUSE and configured for dual boot. What do I have to do to reinstall windows? Can i just do it like i normally would and just make sure it installs on the correct partition and doesn't do anything to the others. I don't want it to screw up the bootloader or something else.
Basically everything was going fine, and i was enjoying the OpenSuse experience, then downloaded djl (Games Launcher) , installed some games and found that i had a very very very bad frame rate (about 1FPS), and my GPU is a NVIDIA GTS250 (1GB), and runs most games flawlessly under m$, so i went about installing the graphics drivers for my card. I followed the instructions and was under the assumption that i installed the correct ones, but now i cannot boot into any graphical interface. I think that it should be a graphics issue, as this was one of the few things done before rebooting. I have tried booting into the normal mode, and the failsafe, I have read many other "Not booting'' posts, and have tried their solutions without success, there include: Changing the boot parameters Logging in and manually trying to boot up the gui (init 3.... init 5... etc)
When the computer tries to load up OpenSuse in normal mode, it comes up with the normal loading screen, and then about 90% of the way it stops for about 30 seconds, and then switches over to a CLI, asking for a login, going through the log a couple of things fail, did have these noted down (but cannot find and will post along with other commands that i am asked to do) I want to try and avoid a reinstall as it took me a long time to get the WiFi card working.
I have a 3dsp pci wifi card, and the last kernel it supports is Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-(21-24) I want to update but dont want to accidentally update the kernal.

I had Ubuntu 8.04 & Windows Xp installed on by 80GB Hard Disk by giving 40GB each to Ubuntu & Xp. Due to some problem in Windows Xp (nothing new) i had to reinstall Windows Xp. I had taken backup of all data on Windows & Ubuntu fully knowing that Grub would go haywire.
Now i want to install Ubuntu 10.04 on the 40GB that was earlier occupied by Ubuntu 8.04 from CD.
