View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed some updates this morning to my F14-64 system. Both Thunderbird and Thunderbird-lightning were updated. Now, Thunderbird won't start at all. The process is running, but no window ever appears. The only thing I've tried at this point is running 'thunderbird -safe-mode' from the command line to disable all plugins, but the result is the same as just running 'thunderbird' -- it just hangs. It doesn't *appear* to be a plugin problem

It's a HP xw6600 with double processor Intel Xeon 5405 2.00 12M/133 QC and graphic card for dual screen Nvidia Quadro NVS 290 PCle. In my OS library I found version 8 to install. It has been installed successfully! However; I've read about advantages for workstation on version 10. Thus, I've downloaded Fedora ISO ver.10 and I've tried to install it in my WS. Here I found a problem: Just in the moment it try to start anaconda, the screen remain black. After three failed intents, I have tried to upgrade my version through the 'yum':
# yum -y update
# yum install preupgrade
# preupgrade
It ran perfectly till anaconda try to run again. Then, I've tried to upgrade to ver.9 from ver.8 and I getting the same problem. I've downloaded the Live CD and that is blocked as well. Of course, I've installed all drivers of my WS before upgrade but I get the same problem. So... How I can fix this problem?... I really need move to version 10. Ah!... I've tried to install beta version 11 but after one hour I get a error messages due at a bug
I installed SLIM and rebooted. gdm failed to start so I went to the terminal and ran gdm manually from there. Then i logged in and removed slim package, reinstalled gdm and rebooted. Gdm still fails to start at boot up. When i try to manually start it, i get the following warnings:
Warning: unable to load file 'etc/gdm/custom.conf'
Warning: unable to find users: no seat-id found
I just play around with apache and php, everything was working right, but, suddenly nothing works, I tried to open a terminal and nothing, Firefox and nothing, then I realized that the OS was freeze, my next step was restart the PC, and guess what, nothing happens, then I Wait, and wait and wait and finally turn off the PC, wait 30sec and turn on, then it shows the PC manufacturer, Ubuntu logo, Ubuntu wallpaper, and nothing else!!! :'( Where in the name of god is my login screen??

View 13 Replies View RelatedRunning openSUSE 11.3, installed a month ago, and the only change I did from the default install was to update to kde 4.5 (along with usual updates).Since the upgrade, kmix doesn't start. When I click it, I see the bouncy kmix icon, and a new slot is opened on the task bar which reads 'kmix', but it shows nothing, and after a minute or so it disappears, along with the kmix bouncy icon.No error is given, so I tried to run from shell. I install UBUNTU 1104 on HP Desktop PC, but now it doesnt start. Just appears a Black screen with this msg: Error Code = 1001.
I want reinstall but PC is not reading CD, But the CD drive is working.
I install UBUNTU 11 in other 6 PCs, and work fine.
PC inf.: HP Compaq dc5800 Small Form Factor
I never install Windows on this PC. The original OS was UBUNTU 9.04 and updates.
How do I get into safe mode of something of the sort? I thought all I had to do was tap F6 as the computer boots up, it was running perfectly untill I updated it, when I pressed restart it started to shut down and then it just got stuck in a black screen with a small white cursor flashing, and there it stayed I've restarted it a load of times and no luck, I was getting ready to reinstall it when I remembered that I have no other cd burner in the house other than the one on the machine that's just packed up and though I could use a flash drive neither of the 2 I have with me are big enough, the bigger ones are both at work along with my ubuntu instalation CD.
On a second probably unhelpful note I'm getting really fed up with ubuntu it's proving to be about as unreliable as windows, every other week for whatever reason it fancies it just packs up and more frustrating for me is that while I know my way around windows and can usually sort it out I haven't got a clue about how to sort Linux problems out and before anyone mentions it yes it was a relatively new instalation, all I had installed on it other than the OS was the updates up unlit now and XBMC and it all had been working flawlessly for 2 weeks or so!
A couple of days ago my girlfriend and I were using my laptop to watch Hulu on my tv. I've been able to do this in the past with some frustration because it is not exactly clear what settings to use so that the tv works and doesn't distort the picture. While we were using it, the update manager came up and I let the computer update while we were watching Hulu. It came time for the computer to request that I restart and I selected "Restart Later," which I didn't exactly do after we were done watching. I shut the computer down and the next day when we were about to turn the computer on to watch again, it turned itself off after selecting Ubuntu. I tried again and caught a message that it couldn't find the drive that Ubuntu was on. I haven't done anything else to the computer aside from updating it. I am running Vista 32 (shudders) as well as Ubuntu 10.04. I am currently on the Vista part of the computer and can see the folder for Ubuntu on the computer.
My question is: Is there any way that I can go into that folder and change something through Windows so that I can get Ubuntu back? Or do I have to reinstall Ubuntu, and how would I go about doing that?
Edit: I should clarify that I use the S-video out for watching tv - not sure that it matters.
I just recently updated my Ubuntu's software on 10.04. I restarted my computer and everything was fine. The next day I tried to get into Ubuntu it just goes to a black screen and restarts.
I am currently dual booting with windowsXP/Ubuntu. Everything was working fine until just a few days ago. Now I am unsure what to do. When given the choice to boot between WindowsXP and Ubuntu only windows works. When I click on windows it loads up windows. When I click Ubuntu it just goes to a black screen and then restarts and prompts me again to select between them.
Please help. I am unsure what is wrong as I am still very new to Linux and using this type of OS. I am not sure if I need to re-install, but this would obvious be the last option.

I am using an Acer Aspire 5536 AMD dual core laptop with a 64bit installation of Susie 11.4. Using 11.2 I had no problems connecting to the wireless router. As soon as 11.4 was installed, clean install, and the laptop rebooted, network manager failed to start, until manually invoked and then enabling networking through the system tray. Even after this it will not connect to a wired or wireless network sometimes for more than 30 minutes.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.
After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.
I am installing in Kubuntu (I cant stand ubuntu anymore) But when i try to use dd to install to a USB, I cant because Ubuntu got rid of the root and when i sudo it, It doesnt seem to work!
Here is the message i get:
I have coriander-2.0.0-1.fc14.i686 installed and it does n t work anymore as it used to with my IIDC compliant ieee1394 camera.
I understood that raw1394 and video1394 modules are now deprecated. So firewire_ohci and firewire_core are loaded when I plug in the camera. There is no more /dev/raw1394 and /dev/video-0 streams, but now there are /dev/fw0 and /dev/fw1.
When I run Coriander, I receive: Erreur de segmentation (core dumped)
If I create the following link: ln -s /dev/fw1 /dev/raw1394

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am fairly new to Fedora or rather use it only for some school exercises I get. I have to setup a Samba server with some basic settings and it doesn't want to work. I first tried it on the Fedora VM I got from school (version 11). It somehow worked, but extremely bad ... the Windows client had to wait for over a minute to get either access or an errormessage, that the server was not found (but when entered the ip in the adressfield on top it worked (with a minute or more to wait)). I tried updating the VM - no improvement. So I decided to download Fedora 12, installed it and the Windows client gains instant access on first glance. But when I try to get access to a specific share, it only tells me, that I am not allowed to access it Oo.
Here is my config:

I even turned off iptables and Windows firewall.
The funny thing is: I tried exactly the same config on my homeserver (copy and paste), which runs Arch, and it works with no problem. But on Fedora I cant access it from nowhere. Not from WinXP, Win7 or any Linux. Simply won't work.
I dont have any gui on Fedora
I have laptop ASUS X51RL with Intel pentium dual core inside processor. As mentioned here:I tried to install i386 FC12 on it. When the instalation was completed, there was a message to reboot. So did I, and while the BIOS was still loading, of course, removed the DVD in order not to repeat the instalation. Fedora started loading with the three varioants of the blue color bars and suddenly on the screenappeared a long message finishing with the words: "kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt " and that was all - the system stopped untillo there and never loaded For the last 2 days this is about my 12th attempt to get linux. Before I had tried about over 6 times with ubuntu, finishing the same way after the first reboot, 1 time knoppix and 2 times Debian. Only debian succeeded to load succesfully after its instaltion was complete, but I didnt linke it and a friend of mine strongly recommended me FC12. So what am I supposed to do??? I guarentee, my hard disc is not corruted as I read 1 hundred times on google, I had benn running windows 7 before I started trying to get linux and everything was OK... the install DVD is also OK, I tested it in the same beginning of the instalation and the test was successfull.
