Fedora :: F15 Hangs During First Boot On Virtual Box / Sort It?
Aug 24, 2011
I am installing Fedora 15 as a guest machine on virtual box. the installation completes fine, but it gets hanged on the date and time screen during first boot. Even on clicking "Forward" button it doesn't work and just gets stuck there.
I am using windows 7 as the host machine and I have given 1 GB ram and 8 GB hard disk to guest fedora OS.
Before the installation, I checked the media also it was shown to be correct. The media I am using is virtual clone drive for DVD ISO image. VirtualBox version 4.1.2 was used.

I use an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card as my work machine, mostly at a desk, using a docking station to link it into a monitor. I upgraded to Lucid last weekend. When using the integral screen on the laptop the graphics have been fine, but when using a monitor I initially got some very poor contrast, brightness and gamma output, described in this bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...ux/+bug/548709
According to the advice in that bug report, I upgraded the kernel, with Kernelcheck automatically updating me to 2.6.35-candela. Now, rather than poor graphics with the monitor it just hangs on the splash screen, displaying the words Ubuntu with the dots underneath.
Reading around, when similar problems have been seen in previous versions of Ubuntu it has been a graphics issue, which fits. One piece of advice I've seen quite commonly is to remove the "quiet splash" from grub, which I've tried but doesn't work. I am tempted to try and work through the different grub commands these guys used to tackle a similar problem with the live CD:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472054
But am a bit reticent as I don't know what they all do.
As an aside, the 2.6.35-candela kernel brings up a bunch of errors on boot, described at the link below, but reading that thread they don't look like they would cause my problem:

I recently installed VirtualBox 3.1.8 r61349 from the deb file virtualbox- .1_3.1.8-61349~Ubuntu~lucid_amd64.deb onto a recent clean install of Lucid Lynx on my HP p6210f (6144 MB RAM, AMD Athlon II X4 620 CPU). I then imported a friend's VM and tried to boot it. The VM consistently hangs with the following showing on the console (this is the last 3 lines, for context):
NetLabel: protocols = UNLABELED CIPSOv4
NetLabel: unlabeled traffic allowed by default
NET: Registered protocol family 2
I thought initially it was a problem with my friend's VM, so I decided to create a new VM from scratch, and boot from a CentOS-5.4-i386-DVD instead, which I have done before with previous versions of VirtualBox. When I do that, I'm able to select my installation method (so I know it's booting from the CentOS ISO), and then it hangs at exactly the same point. I couldn't find any other mention of this problem, but it's a pretty recent release of VirtualBox - I think just days old.
The VM: OS Type=RedHat (presumed 32-bit), 1 processor, 1024 MB RAM

I've been using linux for a long time, and I just ran into a problem that has me stumped. Any time I mistype a command, it says "Command not found."... yea, I know that's normal. But it doesn't return me to my # prompt. I have to press Ctrl+C to get back. code...
I know I do have one issue with this computer, I have 2 blown caps on my motherboard. This was a dual boot system, but after a virus with winblows, I decided to switch it to strictly linux. (roommates... *grumble*) I think I was running fc10 before I wiped the hd & installed fc12. Fc12 does seem to be running slower, and I still haven't got my sound card working properly... but that issue is for another topic...

Having a problem with my system hanging after updating Fedora 12. Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
6 gig Corsair DDR 800
1 x 160 gig SATA (OS)
1 x 500 gig SATA (data)
I have my system configured for dual boot with Windows 7. After installing F12, I can reboot with no problem. However, after I install the kmod-nvidia drivers, my system hangs on reboot. If I press any key on the keyboard, it will start to load, the freeze until I press a key again. I have tried both Fedora 12 x64 and i386 with the same results. Here are the steps that I took to install the kmod-nvidia drivers code...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

After some time (thirty second - a few minutes) computer hung (screen froze, I couldn't switch to console, only hard reset helped). From log message I suspected graphic card and I replaced it to some other based on PCI Express (GeForce 6200). It's better. Computer works fine during office work (OO, Firefox, ...), but after being a few minutes in 3D mode (e.g. game with graphics 3D) hangs in the same way.
The last messages in log are always code...

I made some hardware upgrades today: installed a new video card, a new CPU cooler, and a DVD burner. Everything seemed fine, but every 10-15 minutes the computer just freezes. Freeze is actually the wrong word since I can still move the mouse's cursor, but it has no effect. Keyboard input is useless and I just have to reboot. On the 3rd reboot fsck checked the root partition and made some changes.
I have checked system/CPU temperature to see if maybe the cooler wasn't working right and checked it's mounts. Everything there is great.
The system hangs whether I'm using the burner or not. (It's an ASUS)
The hangs seem to happen when scrolling a window or changing desktops, but I'm constantly doing something to that effect so it's hard to say if that's the cause.
The card is GALAXY Geforce 240GT. I've never used a Galaxy card so I'm leaning towards that, and have gone back to the old Geforce 9400 in the meantime, but while I'm waiting to see what happens, I was wondering if maybe the filesystem getting modded in the fsck check might point to a filesystem error causing the hangs, or if it seemed more likely that the filesystem was corrupted by the hangs.

My fedora 12 laptop will no longer boot properly. i get my bios screen, then the fedora intro screen (with the f / infinity symbol on a blue background) after a brief blank screen, then i get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. i can type things but nothing happens when i do, and the computer never exits out of that screen.
is there anything i can do to correct this problem short of a reinstall? i really hate to lose some of the drivers i went to a lot of trouble to find and install as well as some software and some user files.
p.s.: the last thing i did before the problem was to use yum to install quite a few fonts (xorg-...) but it ran after that and i think even went through one reboot with no problems.

Ok, so i just got fedora 12 all set up in Virtual Box and got the guest additions and stuff so i can have max screen res. I went to set up compiz following this site (google Using Compiz on Fedora 12 as Linux Guest in VirtualBox) installed dkms, rebooted and now after it loads the bar at the bottom that says fedora 12, it gives a blank black screen with a solid white line at the top like a c prompt curser. Whats the deal here? did dkms break my install or something? Its on a vm so no big loss but id still like to know.

I tried a number of times to install dual boot with Win2k. I keep getting errors at the stage of setting up the partition for the install. When I try to choose ext4 it says Fedora cannot be installed on a bootable drive, fix the problem. I don't see how to fix it...it does not say what to do or change.
I have had other linux installed in the same partition without a problem. What gives?
150GB drive for both OS's Separate drive for data, not involved in the install.
| 72GB NTFS Win2K | 76 GB free for ext3 and swap |
LBA support on in Bios.

Downloaded Fedora.iso the other day. Burned a cd so I could hopefully load either the cd or iso. into a virtual machine. Neither one works. As a virtual machine have no BIOS issue, so that's not it. I did burn and not just copy files, so that's not it either. Anyone have any ideas?

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

I have been using F10 since its release and have not had any trouble until now. During my last session, I ran an update. Today when I boot my desktop (single boot btw), it hangs just after the boot loader. The only sort of warning is:
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, 1pa 0x45E1
I have browsed the forums to no avail. Other have the same issue, but with no posted solution. I have tried disabling NetworkManager, but I think it may be the service that runs after NetworkManager.

Boot-up hangs at black screen with blinking cursor in upper left corner for over 2 minutes before continuing. I select F 14 with grub hit the enter key and go straight to a black screen with blinking cursor. Hitting the esc key does nothing until boot-up actually starts. Afterwards, boot-up is perfect. I had this problem a few upgrades ago and the fix was simple but I can't remember what I did. I've searched every phrase I can think of and can't find a thread that addresses my problem.
I have a F 13 kernel on my machine and have no problem booting it.
Dual-boot, F 14 and windows 7, 64 bit.

After doing a reinstall, and then upgrading, I have a problem: as the boot script comes to ATD, it hangs. Someone suggested doing an interactive start ---- and it worked! Just say no to ATD, and boot goes well. Of course, I don't really want to do that each time. How do I remove it? That is, get it out of the init.d or rc.d boot procedure

I recently tried to clone a RHEL 4 system and migrate it to some different hardware (IBM Blade to an IBM x3650M2 rack mount). I'm getting an error when it tries to boot up. It gets past the grub part, but then errors out quickly with this error code...
I've done this before, but the other system I migrated didn't have a separate "/" and "/boot" partition. I think this may be why it's having an issue. It seems like "/boot" is actually /dev/sda1 and "/" is /dev/sda2 (from booting up RHEL rescue disk). I've tried changing fstab and grub.conf, but I think I may be missing something.

Few days back I have installed VirtualBox in my ubuntu 9.04. Then in VB I have installed one distro of linux based on ubuntu 8.04 ( BAISHAKHI LINUX). Since then my system ( i.e., host ubuntu 9.04,) started hanging and behaving quiet irregularly. The GUI package manager of my host ubuntu 9.04 does not responding each time I start it from system>administration; rather its gets hanged and I have to use "force quit". I have installed Virtual Box 3.1.

I am having a problem getting my virtual console back after starting XWindows. The display goes blank when I press Ctrl-Alt-F1. If I press Ctrl-Alt-F7 I get the X session back. I have tried setting vga=x31A on the linux boot up. Also tried rdev -v /vmlinuz -1, and rebooted. I have tried two different monitors, same problem. One is a an LCD (Philips 170S6Fb/27, the other a Samsung Sync Master 750s. Originally the Samsung worked fine. I could switch between X and VC no problem. Now that I have the LCD monitor working after changing the XF86Config, I have this problem.
My kernel is 2.2.15-5.0, Redhat 6.2. Here is the output of lspci for the video card:
00:0c.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage II+ 215GTB [Mach64 GTB] (rev 9a) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 4755
Flags: bus master, stepping, medium devsel, latency 0
Memory at e2000000 (32-bit, prefetchable)
I/O ports at b400
Memory at e0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled]
Hopefully there is someway to control how linux sets the video mode when switching consoles.

I have just completed a dual boot installation of FC10. The install was done from CD's I downloaded from the Fedora website. The installation (seemed to have) went fine, and the machine still boots into XP if selected from the menu. The Fedora installation does not complete the boot process. I have three bars that move across the bottom of the screen, and the Fedora 10 graphic tuns white, and then the system hangs. I have let it sit at this screen for as long as 30 minutes. The screen will blank occasionally, but returns to the same place if I hit a key on the keyboard.
I have it installed on an old HP E800 netserver, running dual P3-866mHz processors, 2GB ram, a ATI Radeon 7000 video card, and three 36GB SCSI drives, non-raid. I know FC10 will run on this machine, as I have a friend running it on another E800 without any problems. This machine does have on-board video that is disabled only by plugging a different video card in (Phoenix BIOS).

In F10 the boot sequence hangs just after loading anacron. I booted with interactive mode and after saying 'yes' to starting anacron I'm prompted to start 'local'. When I say yes, my system hangs.
I've seen quite a few posts regarding very similar issues that people were having. None of them seem to have a clear cut solution.
Some posts mentioned about the wrong video drivers, however I've been using the same video drivers for a couple of months now and never experienced this problem.
I looked at /etc/rc.local and all it has in it is 'touch /var/lock/sybsys/local'
I also looked at the file above and there is nothing in it.
Any ideas/solutions? Everything was working just fine the other day. so I'm completely baffled.

This is one of those newbie questions about where I look to find error messages so that I can understand what the issues might be. My Fedora 12 setup invariably always hangs whenever I login following a cold boot. I login to x/g-nome, the screen clears and the initial background appears and then that's it.
I've been getting out of this by switching to another TTY (CTRL + ALT + 2), login as root and issue "shutdown -r now". System re-boots and I can login normally. I can see a stream of messages, I think relating to x scroll up the screen rapidly after the shutdown command. I'm not fast enough on the Pause button to read them. My question(s) then is... is there somewhere I can look to see what those messages might be? From the symptoms described initially, anyone have any thoughts on what the issue is likely to be?

I have just upgraded my F11 x86_64 system using the DVD ISO.
After rebooting as requested:
1) Cupsd fails to start - it can't find libaudit.so.1 (this doesn't worry me in itself).
2) Boot process proceeds until starting hald. This gets an OK response, but then the process hangs. No further output appears on the console. Pressing [ENTER] just causes a blank line to appear on the console. Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL causes a reboot, and the same symptoms re-occur.
I'm tempted to boot with the rescue disk, save a few critical data directories, then start afresh with a clean install, but is there anything I can do to salvage the upgrade?
