Slackware :: Random Hangs / Sort It Out?
Feb 21, 2010
I made some hardware upgrades today: installed a new video card, a new CPU cooler, and a DVD burner. Everything seemed fine, but every 10-15 minutes the computer just freezes. Freeze is actually the wrong word since I can still move the mouse's cursor, but it has no effect. Keyboard input is useless and I just have to reboot. On the 3rd reboot fsck checked the root partition and made some changes.
I have checked system/CPU temperature to see if maybe the cooler wasn't working right and checked it's mounts. Everything there is great.
The system hangs whether I'm using the burner or not. (It's an ASUS)
The hangs seem to happen when scrolling a window or changing desktops, but I'm constantly doing something to that effect so it's hard to say if that's the cause.
The card is GALAXY Geforce 240GT. I've never used a Galaxy card so I'm leaning towards that, and have gone back to the old Geforce 9400 in the meantime, but while I'm waiting to see what happens, I was wondering if maybe the filesystem getting modded in the fsck check might point to a filesystem error causing the hangs, or if it seemed more likely that the filesystem was corrupted by the hangs.

I have about 1000 text files and I need to view each, and move it to a folder if it's the correct one. I can only do basic sorting by length/size, and I can't grep because the text is random. How can I do this besides manually openiing + saving each in gedit.I'm on Ubuntu Linux.I've already done all the sorting I can based on ize, wordcount, greps, date, etc. This is what's left over. I'm trying to find an easy way to view +save/ignore the rest.

About a week after I installed F12 on a brand new system, a friend came over and went on to play poker on facebook. At some point he yelled that the PC froze. I was working on another machine at the time and tried to ssh to the supposedly hung system, but couldn't; Except for playing poker he had audacious open and about 3 seconds of the song that was playing at the time of the hang, kept looping. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Backspace nor any of the Alt+SysRq combos had any effect whatsoever, so I had to press the reset button (and I have to say this was the first time I had to do so in linux after almost a decade of using it, save for a hiccup with my first gentoo kernel).
The system usually freezes if there are two or more sound streams, but that is not always the case. The best way to get the system to crash is by playing something in audacious or rhythmbox while seeking through a video in mplayer or vlc or having flash content appear in firefox (I am using adobe's latest 64-bit flash plug-in and have been using it without any problems -though on other systems- since F10). Also most but not all the times the system is going to hang, there are a few skips in audacious every ~10-30 minutes. I've been getting the lock-ups with every kernel released so far.
My system logs don't contain any useful info after each hang; there are however certain problems mentioned in syslog which I thought they could be relevant, but they always appear whether the system works fine or not, namely the following:
Code:
I used to get a lot more of these with previous kernels:
Code:
Code:
This one appeared every now and then until Dec 25:
Code:
And this one is always there:
Code:
Finally, at every boot I get this from abrtd, but it doesn't seem to be related:
Code:
Yesterday, I devoted the entire day to hunting down the culprit, but I couldn't get the system to hang; I had rhytmbox, audacious, totem, vlc, mplayer and vlc all playing music and videos simultaneously from local disks, network shares and through upnp, I got myself a facebook account in order to play that zynga poker thing, I upgraded alsa-lib to 1.0.22 from updates-testing, rebooted countless times, but the system didn't hang nor did any of the above messages disappear.
Today as I was browsing through some web pages, one of which had an interactive flash ad, while listening to music and the system froze again.

I recently installed CentOS 5.3 on a Dell PowerEdge 1800 server that used to have Microsoft Windows SBS 2003 on it. Everything seemed to be going fine until a few days ago. Here's the sum of it all...
- System seems to randomly hang, at which it becomes unavailable on the network (can't be pinged, monitor won't come back on, and you can't wake it up... have to reboot, the scroll lock and caps lock keys flash at the same time)
- Received this error message...
Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason a0.
You probably have a hardware problem with your RAM chips.
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue.
...it doesn't crash at this point though. I ran memtest86 twice and did not experience any problems. I updated the BIOS to the newest version, which contained a few bug fixes, but still experienced the same problems

I get the newest fedora 13 dvd install & the live cd. Put on the disk and try to install. But the installer hangs on random times, so i cant install the system. Sometimes hangs on the anaconda start, others in the partition tables, others in the language section.
i try to run the live cd and install from there. Ok the first time the cd boot very nice . But when i try to install , the pc hangs again. Other times the boot from live even finish, when the last percents r coming, hangs again.
I all hangs, the dvd drive stop's and never return. So the Fan of cpu start to run very quickly and stay there forever until my patience permits.
So i use the ubuntu installer ( almost 4 years with u fedora, and need ubuntu installer!?shame on u) and search some information about the case. Yes, the last ubuntu boot, install, and run out of the box very quickly!
I see others with Dell & others brands still have problems with hangs and freezing , in boot and installs, so the first thing i search was the kernel parameters and try to use some flags.
I think the source of this kind of problem is the acpi . When i check the flag pci=noacpi or acpi=off , i have see that on the pre-anaconda start, when u choose the english language in text mode, clicking next the installer cant anymore find the media DVD, and the hard disk with the partition table. Sometimes the installer brings me the option to search in the ubuntu partitions, sometimes no.
How to debug and search the source of the problem? Any way? code...

I am installing Fedora 15 as a guest machine on virtual box. the installation completes fine, but it gets hanged on the date and time screen during first boot. Even on clicking "Forward" button it doesn't work and just gets stuck there.
I am using windows 7 as the host machine and I have given 1 GB ram and 8 GB hard disk to guest fedora OS.
Before the installation, I checked the media also it was shown to be correct. The media I am using is virtual clone drive for DVD ISO image. VirtualBox version 4.1.2 was used.

I've been using linux for a long time, and I just ran into a problem that has me stumped. Any time I mistype a command, it says "Command not found."... yea, I know that's normal. But it doesn't return me to my # prompt. I have to press Ctrl+C to get back. code...
I know I do have one issue with this computer, I have 2 blown caps on my motherboard. This was a dual boot system, but after a virus with winblows, I decided to switch it to strictly linux. (roommates... *grumble*) I think I was running fc10 before I wiped the hd & installed fc12. Fc12 does seem to be running slower, and I still haven't got my sound card working properly... but that issue is for another topic...

I use an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card as my work machine, mostly at a desk, using a docking station to link it into a monitor. I upgraded to Lucid last weekend. When using the integral screen on the laptop the graphics have been fine, but when using a monitor I initially got some very poor contrast, brightness and gamma output, described in this bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...ux/+bug/548709
According to the advice in that bug report, I upgraded the kernel, with Kernelcheck automatically updating me to 2.6.35-candela. Now, rather than poor graphics with the monitor it just hangs on the splash screen, displaying the words Ubuntu with the dots underneath.
Reading around, when similar problems have been seen in previous versions of Ubuntu it has been a graphics issue, which fits. One piece of advice I've seen quite commonly is to remove the "quiet splash" from grub, which I've tried but doesn't work. I am tempted to try and work through the different grub commands these guys used to tackle a similar problem with the live CD:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472054
But am a bit reticent as I don't know what they all do.
As an aside, the 2.6.35-candela kernel brings up a bunch of errors on boot, described at the link below, but reading that thread they don't look like they would cause my problem:

Having a problem with my system hanging after updating Fedora 12. Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
6 gig Corsair DDR 800
1 x 160 gig SATA (OS)
1 x 500 gig SATA (data)
I have my system configured for dual boot with Windows 7. After installing F12, I can reboot with no problem. However, after I install the kmod-nvidia drivers, my system hangs on reboot. If I press any key on the keyboard, it will start to load, the freeze until I press a key again. I have tried both Fedora 12 x64 and i386 with the same results. Here are the steps that I took to install the kmod-nvidia drivers code...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

After some time (thirty second - a few minutes) computer hung (screen froze, I couldn't switch to console, only hard reset helped). From log message I suspected graphic card and I replaced it to some other based on PCI Express (GeForce 6200). It's better. Computer works fine during office work (OO, Firefox, ...), but after being a few minutes in 3D mode (e.g. game with graphics 3D) hangs in the same way.
The last messages in log are always code...

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

This is a new (Less than one month) old netbook that is just running Slackware 13.1 with KDE.Now, every 10 or so minutes I'm getting a "Battery disconnected/Not found" error and it's insisting I plug in.Now, the battery itself is fine since by ignoring these messages, I'm getting 5-6 hours battery life easily but none the less. It's a concern. It appears to be software related rather than a bad battery.Has anyone experienced this and/or know of a solution?

IIRC, we had this same problem with VLC a version or two ago, but it was with Xfce. Now in KDE 4.9.5, VLC 1.1.6*, will freeze if you click on, "Media" then "Open File." However, if you click on "Media" and pick a selection off of the "Recent Media" list, it plays said media just fine.

I have checked all logs but there is no problem!
Neither in syslog, nor in messages. The inittab is set to runstate 3 ...

Again when I was working under Xfce system hangs up. Earlier I had similar problems but under KDE so I blamed KDE for that. I am sure that there is something wrong with an access to external input devices. Some kind of a broken connection. I am using a USB keyboard but the same happened with PS/2 keyboard. Two flashing leds, I guess, indicate that device is no longer supported by the system. The only hope for an access to the system is via external wired connection. The other possibilities, I am thinking of, are hardware problems with PCI-bus or a virus affecting on a hardware level.

After the bunch of updates with current, my custom kernel (2.6.33) can't boot.
The error is:
/sbin/e2fsck: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda6
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
The /dev/sda6 is ext4 and is ok since it can boot with official huge smp kernel 2.6.33.
My custom kernel can boot before this bunch of updates in current.
What i missing in kernel?

I have been using slackware for quite some time now and love installing software in it. Since you get to know whats actually going into your system adn all. Anyways I have been trying to download and install Rosegarden all day now. I installed all the dependencies listed here:
ladspa_sdk
dssi
liblo
liblrdf
[code]....
i have to physically stop it because my computer hangs up so bad and it sits like that for hours! Granted this is Rosegarden 10.04.1 but i have also installed 10.04.2 under my downloads section and ran into the same problem. Now i know that slack 13 dropped QT3 and went to QT4. Rosegarden 10.04.2 was supposed to run on QT4 but i get the same code and the same hang up every single time. No matter what version i try to install. I only tried 10.04.1 thinking that maybe it would work on the slack 13 kernel since thats the number that was for this build in slackbuild.org and 10.04.2 was in the 13.1 tree but neither of them install and just hang up on the computer. Is it a qt3 to a qt4 issue?
