Jun 16, 2010I just installed 10.4 Server, and dutifully did apt-get update;apt-get upgrade" after installation.
The upgrade hangs at "libc6". I get no keyboard response (not even Ctl-Alt-Del), and apparently no other response, either - pressing the power button doesn't even interrupt it! Usually press Power will interrupt whatever is going on and reboot the machine.

Installing upgrades hangs at configuring libc6 xscreensaver and xlockmore must be restarted before upgrading One or more running instances of xscreensaver or xscreensaver have been detected on this system. Because of incompatible library changes, the upgrade of the GNU libc library will leave you unable to authenticate to these programs. You should arrange for these programs to be restarted or stopped before continuing this upgrade, to avoid locking your users out of their current sessions. I've stopped xscreensaver it is the only session running. I will reboot and stop xscreensaver and then run the upgrade.

Jun 12, 2010I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

Feb 21, 2010I made some hardware upgrades today: installed a new video card, a new CPU cooler, and a DVD burner. Everything seemed fine, but every 10-15 minutes the computer just freezes. Freeze is actually the wrong word since I can still move the mouse's cursor, but it has no effect. Keyboard input is useless and I just have to reboot. On the 3rd reboot fsck checked the root partition and made some changes.
I have checked system/CPU temperature to see if maybe the cooler wasn't working right and checked it's mounts. Everything there is great.
The system hangs whether I'm using the burner or not. (It's an ASUS)
The hangs seem to happen when scrolling a window or changing desktops, but I'm constantly doing something to that effect so it's hard to say if that's the cause.
The card is GALAXY Geforce 240GT. I've never used a Galaxy card so I'm leaning towards that, and have gone back to the old Geforce 9400 in the meantime, but while I'm waiting to see what happens, I was wondering if maybe the filesystem getting modded in the fsck check might point to a filesystem error causing the hangs, or if it seemed more likely that the filesystem was corrupted by the hangs.

Aug 15, 2010I use an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card as my work machine, mostly at a desk, using a docking station to link it into a monitor. I upgraded to Lucid last weekend. When using the integral screen on the laptop the graphics have been fine, but when using a monitor I initially got some very poor contrast, brightness and gamma output, described in this bug.

According to the advice in that bug report, I upgraded the kernel, with Kernelcheck automatically updating me to 2.6.35-candela. Now, rather than poor graphics with the monitor it just hangs on the splash screen, displaying the words Ubuntu with the dots underneath.
Reading around, when similar problems have been seen in previous versions of Ubuntu it has been a graphics issue, which fits. One piece of advice I've seen quite commonly is to remove the "quiet splash" from grub, which I've tried but doesn't work. I am tempted to try and work through the different grub commands these guys used to tackle a similar problem with the live CD:

As an aside, the 2.6.35-candela kernel brings up a bunch of errors on boot, described at the link below, but reading that thread they don't look like they would cause my problem:

Fedora :: F15 Hangs During First Boot On Virtual Box / Sort It?
Aug 24, 2011I am installing Fedora 15 as a guest machine on virtual box. the installation completes fine, but it gets hanged on the date and time screen during first boot. Even on clicking "Forward" button it doesn't work and just gets stuck there.
I am using windows 7 as the host machine and I have given 1 GB ram and 8 GB hard disk to guest fedora OS.
Before the installation, I checked the media also it was shown to be correct. The media I am using is virtual clone drive for DVD ISO image. VirtualBox version 4.1.2 was used.

Mar 2, 2011im trying to install wine1.3 and i need to upgrade libc6-i386 so i let apt-get try to do it, but it hangs at unpacking the deb, normally it has no problem no error occurs just sits there like its a huge deb but its only 3mbs. ive tryed using synaptic and doing the following.
sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
sudo apt-get check

Fedora :: Bash Hangs When Command Not Found / Sort It?
Dec 9, 2009I've been using linux for a long time, and I just ran into a problem that has me stumped. Any time I mistype a command, it says "Command not found."... yea, I know that's normal. But it doesn't return me to my # prompt. I have to press Ctrl+C to get back. code...
I know I do have one issue with this computer, I have 2 blown caps on my motherboard. This was a dual boot system, but after a virus with winblows, I decided to switch it to strictly linux. (roommates... *grumble*) I think I was running fc10 before I wiped the hd & installed fc12. Fc12 does seem to be running slower, and I still haven't got my sound card working properly... but that issue is for another topic...

I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.

Fedora :: System Hangs On Reboot After Installing Kmod-nvidia In F12 / Sort It?
Mar 31, 2010Having a problem with my system hanging after updating Fedora 12. Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
6 gig Corsair DDR 800
1 x 160 gig SATA (OS)
1 x 500 gig SATA (data)
I have my system configured for dual boot with Windows 7. After installing F12, I can reboot with no problem. However, after I install the kmod-nvidia drivers, my system hangs on reboot. If I press any key on the keyboard, it will start to load, the freeze until I press a key again. I have tried both Fedora 12 x64 and i386 with the same results. Here are the steps that I took to install the kmod-nvidia drivers code...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Appeared to work fine.
Restart after install OK.
Ran Update Manager:
It started work on some 300-odd updates, But froze when "Applying Changes" to the following package:
libc6-dev. It was "Preparing to configure" libc6-dev, But couldn't get any further. The Update Manager window said it was at this point: "Security Updates - User-space parcer utility for AppArmor" Total freeze-up.
Forced restart.
Got to password screen OK.
Then to blank screen:

This is all most unfortunate. The computer belongs to someone I know. They were getting fed up with their other operating system. I suggested Ubuntu. I've got their laptop on a promise to set them up with Ubuntu. I don't have long. They need it quickly. I may have no choice but to give it back to them with their old operating system on it. Won't be any skin off their nose.

Ubuntu Installation :: Retrieving Files From A Secondary Reiser Disk
Oct 19, 2010I've been running various releases of Suse Linux on my home PC for about 6 years (currently running Suse 11.2). The old hard disk in that machine is starting to experience read errors, so I bought a new disk to put into the PC which otherwise works fine.
So I figure now is a good time to give Ubuntu a try. I plan to install the KDE version of ubuntu on the new drive, but once that's finished I will want to mount the old disk and copy as much as I can off of it onto the new disk (JPEGs, old documents, stuff under my home directory.
The old disk uses Reiser. I have read various threads concerning problems with mounting Reiser FS disks under ubuntu, but many of them are old so it's not clear to me what the current status of support for Reiser in ubuntu is.
I am planning to do the following:
1) Remove the old disk from the PC, put the new disk in its place.
2) Install kubuntu on the new disk.
3) Put the old disk back into the machine along with the new one with the old one being the slave/secondary disk so that when I power up the machine, it will be running ubuntu off of the new disk.
At this point I will want to mount the old disk so I can then start copying files off of it.
What do I need to do to mount the old disk, keeping in mind it uses the Reiser file system?

Feb 11, 2010I had Lenny installed on my Acer Aspire laptop however I've had to try to reinstall it.The installation stops at 'Retrieving file 811 of 811' from the ftp server and thats it.I've tried a few times with the same result and I have done many installs without any issue except for this time.

Dec 29, 2010After some time (thirty second - a few minutes) computer hung (screen froze, I couldn't switch to console, only hard reset helped). From log message I suspected graphic card and I replaced it to some other based on PCI Express (GeForce 6200). It's better. Computer works fine during office work (OO, Firefox, ...), but after being a few minutes in 3D mode (e.g. game with graphics 3D) hangs in the same way.
The last messages in log are always code...

Feb 17, 2010I have a Server with Webmin, Usermin and Sendmail using pop3s. I have created a seft signed certificate using webmin. Exported it and imported it to the trusted root certification authorities on my client. This fixes the warning message from internet explorer when attempting making a ssl connection to webmin. When attempting to use usermin or retrieving mail I get that warning that this site's certificate is self signed. I look at the certificate and its not the same as the one I created with webmin. My question is. Is possible to have the same certificate be used by each?

Mar 4, 2010After configuring and everything is going well, Ubuntu stalled in the "Finishing the installation - Setting users and passwords... 25%" step.I verified the download with md5sum after downloading, and checked the CD after burning. I then checked the CD again when booting the live CD. So a bad disk isn't an issue. At first I tried to do the good old "open the CD tray and close it again" trick because the status light wasn't blinking. But the CD drive wouldn't open. (its a SATA CD/DVD drive) After trouble shooting and thinking about what I could do to get it to move forward in the installation, I unplugged the CD drive and plugged it back in again and it seemed to spin back up and read. However its been another 10 minutes and the server is still hanging.Is their anything you recommend I do? I suppose I can start the process over again but I don't want it to stop again, and I would rather it just finish the install since its 2 seconds away from being done. May 2, 2010When this happens you have to open a terminal, get the process id for mysql-server-5 then kill that process. Like this:

then from the list of processes that it spits out look at the process id (the number at the beginning of the line) for mysql-server-5.
Now type

sudo kill -9 XXXXX
where XXXXX is the process id for mysql-server, and enter your password. The upgrade process should now resume.

The boot process hanged here:

What I did try to work around is,
1. Set portfast to all the ports connected the PXE server and client.
2. Edit pxelinux.cfg/default, try different setting in "ip=" (I did not find any menu in the internet which explain to to configure this file).
Fedora Installation :: F15 Network Install Stuck On "retrieving Installation Information"?
May 29, 2011i'm doing a fresh network install of f15 from a usb stick. the installation has now been stuck on the "retrieving installation information for fedora 15 - i386" stage for over an hour. on previous releases this stage has only taken a few mins. i can see from my router that there have been thousands of packets sent and received from the laptop. i've searched all the normal places but can't find anyone else reporting this. does anyone know if this is a known bug (and if there is a fix) or if this stage takes significantly longer in f15 to any previous release ? cheers.

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 Installation Hangs On Server With Large Number Of Drives?
Apr 6, 2009I am attempting to upgrade a system from 4.7 to 5.2 using a (now) DVD drive attached to the onboard IDE. Originally I had tried using a remote NFS image and a USB stick but I thought maybe there was a problem with the image. I can get up to the point of the installation of selecting the keyboard for the system and then it freezes and never goes any further. It doesn't appear to be a kernel panic since I can still switch between consoles.
I've got an MSI K9NGM2-FID with 14 drives in it. It serves as a file server for our backup server. It's got a secondary 4 port Silicon Image SII 3114 SATA card using the sata_sil module, and an old IDE Promise FastTrak TX2000. Technically I could have 16 drives but the 750W PS is walking the fine line on tripping it's self-breaker with the 14 drives and 7 fans. I would like to NOT have to disconnect all of this to do the upgrade.
I thought maybe that running the install using the "noprobe" option would help so it didn't detect and load the modules for the Silicon Image or the Promise cards and detect all of the drives but it still gets stuck on the step after selecting the keyboard. The installation info console and the dmesg console don't really provide any useful information. The installation console says:

And the last lines of the dmesg console says:

Feb 4, 2010I am trying to install wine on a Karmic box, but apt-get is trying to upgrade libc6 at the same time. _I know better than to touch the runtime C library. When I boot the same computer with a live session of Karmic, apt-get installs wine flawlessly.What is going on here? _Why is apt-get trying to do this
