CentOS 5 :: Anacond - Hangs At Blue Screen Of Garbage / Sort It?
Sep 12, 2009
I'm attempting to install CentOS 5.2 x86_64, on an HP Pavilion/Intel Core Duo.
The DVD boots, anaconda starts, displays blue screen with "Loading usb-storage driver", and then hangs at a blue screen of garbage.

I'm a bit of a nube with Linux. Have had it installed and Acer Veriton for a while but after last yum update it now hangs on the blue screen with the F bubble in the middle. I can login remotely OK but am not sure what to look for. It seems to be something X11 related but I'm not sure. I would post the relevant logs but am not sure which ones are associated with this problem.

I have installed Fedora 11 and have been using it for about a 4 months now. Everything has been working just fine until this morning when I booted up the computer and it hung at the blue screen with the F bubble in the middle. I waited about 10 minutes without any change to the system. I held down the power button to power off and tried starting the computer again with the same result.

For the first time, I booted up a Kubuntu live CD on a laptop (850 MHz, 40 GB HD, 256 MB RAM). Earlier releases (< 9.04) boot up fine but it does not. It hangs up right on the splash screen and I can view nothing but a blinking cursor on the console screen. The screen hangs when the loader reaches about 10% in the blue bar. No further information can be provided when there is just a blinking cursor at the console. The CPU shows no activity. The CD boots up fine on other computer. How do I go on installing Kubuntu? Is it a good option to use the Ubuntu Server CD and install all the Kubuntu desktop software on it once it is installed (Server edition is not live disk, and I do not have an alternate install CD)?

I am rebuilding my server with Centos 5.3 and is using a RocketRAID 1740 card. Pop in the Centos DVD, which I have used on my other installs. I typed in "linux dd" to allow me to install the RocketRAID drivers. After selecting the drivers and skipping the test for the media. The screen would be just blue and no progress was seen. I left for hours... and still nothing happens..

I had VNC working with accounts that were logged in. Then I went thru the procedure for vnc-itsp-config (step 5 of the how-to-centos5 vnc server wiki) so that I could log in remotely to an account that was not already logged in.
All went well until....I tried to log in and all I get is this X11 window with a X cursor and a black screen.
I have restarted the vncserver service but I suspect it is a x11 issue (just a guess).

I had a perfectly well running CentOS 5 system but with an old crappy monitor. I replaced the monitor by a bigger one, i did a monitor detect to make sure that CentOS would recognize the highest possible resolution. Then changed the display rsolution for the current user.
Now when i login as root just a black screen appears with a white mouse pointer and then nothing. I already deleted all the contents in the home directory /root but no improvement.
When i login as a new user X is starting perfectly.
Anyone have a clue what i need to do or delete to get X working again? I can nuke the whole box and do a reinstall but i'd rather not.

With 10.04 final i still have the issue with a very distorted screen. Works with RadeonHD driver but performance is utterly crap so no good solution. Also when adding new panels they become invisible and only a logout and login makes them visible around the border. Errors somehow related? How do i file a bug report?

I actually have two reasons for posting this. One is to see if there's an actual name for characters like this:Hopefully that will show up correctly for you. If not, it's a little box with four numbers in it, one in each corner. I don't know their name or their reason for showing up, so it's hard to look for help.
My main problem, though, is that I wrote a program that prints some output to a console using ncurses as it runs. These characters show up on the console, seemingly at random, and disturb the whole thing. Sometimes I'll also get sets of characters like "[13;" I'm not printing anything bizarre on there, just strings and floating-point numbers.

I tried to install a a custom splash screen using this guide [URL] and got as far changing the settings with Startup Manager. I found out that I didn't have an 'Appearance' tab so I reverted all the changes I've done in the 'Boot Options' tab. I then closed Startup Manager and rebooted back into linux. Now instead of seeing the purple Unbuntu screen, I see a black screen with a lot of pixelated garbage. Why I don't have the necessary tabs in Startup Manager to install a theme? I'm using a Macbook Pro 5,5.

I made some hardware upgrades today: installed a new video card, a new CPU cooler, and a DVD burner. Everything seemed fine, but every 10-15 minutes the computer just freezes. Freeze is actually the wrong word since I can still move the mouse's cursor, but it has no effect. Keyboard input is useless and I just have to reboot. On the 3rd reboot fsck checked the root partition and made some changes.
I have checked system/CPU temperature to see if maybe the cooler wasn't working right and checked it's mounts. Everything there is great.
The system hangs whether I'm using the burner or not. (It's an ASUS)
The hangs seem to happen when scrolling a window or changing desktops, but I'm constantly doing something to that effect so it's hard to say if that's the cause.
The card is GALAXY Geforce 240GT. I've never used a Galaxy card so I'm leaning towards that, and have gone back to the old Geforce 9400 in the meantime, but while I'm waiting to see what happens, I was wondering if maybe the filesystem getting modded in the fsck check might point to a filesystem error causing the hangs, or if it seemed more likely that the filesystem was corrupted by the hangs.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

When i try to install Fedora 15 on a clean machine it freezes as soon as the pixelated load bar with the white, light blue and dark blue colors show.
I have tried several different versions of Fedora (64bit and 32bit) and have tried to burn it to a CD and/or DVD (For the larger version) and copying it to a usb pen with universal linux usb, liveUSB creator (from Fedora) and last one i don't remember the name on.

I just installed Ubuntu using Wubi and I am having problems with it. I am running an x58 Rampage II Gene with a radeon hd4850. I'm using a polaroid tlx-04240b hdtv for my monitor. After installing via wubi when I select ubuntu from grub I just get a blue screen that says no signal. I had the same problems before when I tried installing ubuntu and I finally gave up after messing with it for a while. Anyhow I finally started trying to figure it out again and I am brand new to linux so i really dont have a clue what to do here. I'm about 70% sure the problem is just the resolution being to high or the proper driver not installed but as i said I've never successfully used linux so i just dont know how to fix it.

I am installing Fedora 15 as a guest machine on virtual box. the installation completes fine, but it gets hanged on the date and time screen during first boot. Even on clicking "Forward" button it doesn't work and just gets stuck there.
I am using windows 7 as the host machine and I have given 1 GB ram and 8 GB hard disk to guest fedora OS.
Before the installation, I checked the media also it was shown to be correct. The media I am using is virtual clone drive for DVD ISO image. VirtualBox version 4.1.2 was used.

I created a USB stick with Ubuntu 9.10, used it to boot a dell Inspiron 1550 laptop which has WinXP. I tested 9.10, everything went fine out of the box so to speak. But when I went back and tried to boot XP again I got a blue screen. XP starts in safe mode and no apparent problems are detectable but it will not start in Win normal mode anymore.

Just upgraded to 10.04. Screen is now unusable. It's like looking at it through a blue filter. It seems to be averaging the brightness. if there is a large dark area of screen real estate the paler sections getbrighter. The very bizarre thing is, if I switch user, whilst the theme is different, the brightness problem is gone...

I esablished a dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on separate partitions. Then, as I realised that Windows 7 was rubbish and Ubuntu annoyed me by losing wireless connectivity after an update, I decided to go back to Windows XP for a while. So I did what I probably shouldn't have done, and formatted the partition (or so I thought) with Ubuntu on, using Windows.
Now, on booting up the system, all I can get is the Grub Rescue prompt and nothing in the Bios menus seems to be of any assistance.
I've tried booting XP from a CD, but a blue screen error always occurs at the same point in the installation. I wonder if I should make a CD/external drive with Ubuntu on, reinstall it, and go from there?

I've been using linux for a long time, and I just ran into a problem that has me stumped. Any time I mistype a command, it says "Command not found."... yea, I know that's normal. But it doesn't return me to my # prompt. I have to press Ctrl+C to get back. code...
I know I do have one issue with this computer, I have 2 blown caps on my motherboard. This was a dual boot system, but after a virus with winblows, I decided to switch it to strictly linux. (roommates... *grumble*) I think I was running fc10 before I wiped the hd & installed fc12. Fc12 does seem to be running slower, and I still haven't got my sound card working properly... but that issue is for another topic...

While I was trying to install a package in the package manager I accidentally removed a package that I am not aware of.I got a crash report telling me to enter something along the lines of a broken package repair mode. The next time I started my computer it froze at the blue screen with bubbles after login. Is there a way to access the gui using a recovery/rescue type mode so I can access the package manager, or is there a way to find and reinstall the vital package?

I deinstalled Ubuntu today. Just deleted the partitions etc and thought it would be fine, but now this weird grub thing is telling me:
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
I am at the end of my wits: I downloaded a liveCD, which will not boot. My XP cd boots but gets a blue screen afterwards I downloaded a windows 7 live cd which did not help either
Problem is, I can't load my bios anymore to change the boot order... Didn't even know Grub was part of linux...
Point is, I got a presentation tomorrow and all my important files are on that laptop. . . the setroot=(hd0,0) gives no response. I tried a bunch of other commands but I keep getting unknown command...

Code:
0xc0000021 {Fatal system error}
Windows logon process system process has unexpectedly terminated with a status of 0x0000000

I tried installing KDE and KDE for netbooks, and KDE default settings (all from software center). What else do I need to do to get rid of this blue screen?

I use an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card as my work machine, mostly at a desk, using a docking station to link it into a monitor. I upgraded to Lucid last weekend. When using the integral screen on the laptop the graphics have been fine, but when using a monitor I initially got some very poor contrast, brightness and gamma output, described in this bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...ux/+bug/548709
According to the advice in that bug report, I upgraded the kernel, with Kernelcheck automatically updating me to 2.6.35-candela. Now, rather than poor graphics with the monitor it just hangs on the splash screen, displaying the words Ubuntu with the dots underneath.
Reading around, when similar problems have been seen in previous versions of Ubuntu it has been a graphics issue, which fits. One piece of advice I've seen quite commonly is to remove the "quiet splash" from grub, which I've tried but doesn't work. I am tempted to try and work through the different grub commands these guys used to tackle a similar problem with the live CD:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472054
But am a bit reticent as I don't know what they all do.
As an aside, the 2.6.35-candela kernel brings up a bunch of errors on boot, described at the link below, but reading that thread they don't look like they would cause my problem:
