Fedora :: F12 Laptop Won't Boot / Sort It?
Jun 12, 2010
My fedora 12 laptop will no longer boot properly. i get my bios screen, then the fedora intro screen (with the f / infinity symbol on a blue background) after a brief blank screen, then i get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. i can type things but nothing happens when i do, and the computer never exits out of that screen.
is there anything i can do to correct this problem short of a reinstall? i really hate to lose some of the drivers i went to a lot of trouble to find and install as well as some software and some user files.
p.s.: the last thing i did before the problem was to use yum to install quite a few fonts (xorg-...) but it ran after that and i think even went through one reboot with no problems.

Fed up with Windows and ready to become a Linux convert. Here's the only problem:
I've created no less than four separate Live USB distros - all using different USB sticks -
yet my HP Pavilion dv7 refuses to recognize any of them as "bootable devices."
1) Have formatted USB sticks in FAT16 & FAT32 - neither made a difference.
2) Have created bootable USB sticks using Ubuntu Minimal Live install; Ubuntu full Live install; PuppyLinux Live install; even a simple gparted live install - none will boot.
3) Have checked & re-checked that BIOS is set to boot first from USB drive device.
4) 2 of the 4 USB sticks are new, fresh out of the packaging; and 3 of the 4 USB sticks are each from different manufacturers - so I'm fairly certain it's not a issue of a particular brand being incompatible, nor is it due to the sticks being corrupted somehow.
5) Each of the 4 live distros appears to have downloaded just fine - all necessary files appear to be in order.
6) Have tried using Unetbootin, Ubuntu's own live usb tool, and 1 or 2 others - all have failed to boot my HP laptop.
7) Have even tried removing all non-essential hardware before booting - even booting with no hard drives installed - system still returns the error "no bootable device detected."
This laptop is only 2 years old; I know it should be able to boot from USB. I can boot from a (rather old) SliTaz distro on CD just fine - but I need a persistent USB stick so I can easily add packages as needed, etc...s.

Ok, so i just got fedora 12 all set up in Virtual Box and got the guest additions and stuff so i can have max screen res. I went to set up compiz following this site (google Using Compiz on Fedora 12 as Linux Guest in VirtualBox) installed dkms, rebooted and now after it loads the bar at the bottom that says fedora 12, it gives a blank black screen with a solid white line at the top like a c prompt curser. Whats the deal here? did dkms break my install or something? Its on a vm so no big loss but id still like to know.

I tried a number of times to install dual boot with Win2k. I keep getting errors at the stage of setting up the partition for the install. When I try to choose ext4 it says Fedora cannot be installed on a bootable drive, fix the problem. I don't see how to fix it...it does not say what to do or change.
I have had other linux installed in the same partition without a problem. What gives?
150GB drive for both OS's Separate drive for data, not involved in the install.
| 72GB NTFS Win2K | 76 GB free for ext3 and swap |
LBA support on in Bios.

I am installing Fedora 15 as a guest machine on virtual box. the installation completes fine, but it gets hanged on the date and time screen during first boot. Even on clicking "Forward" button it doesn't work and just gets stuck there.
I am using windows 7 as the host machine and I have given 1 GB ram and 8 GB hard disk to guest fedora OS.
Before the installation, I checked the media also it was shown to be correct. The media I am using is virtual clone drive for DVD ISO image. VirtualBox version 4.1.2 was used.

Downloaded Fedora.iso the other day. Burned a cd so I could hopefully load either the cd or iso. into a virtual machine. Neither one works. As a virtual machine have no BIOS issue, so that's not it. I did burn and not just copy files, so that's not it either. Anyone have any ideas?

I recently tried to clone a RHEL 4 system and migrate it to some different hardware (IBM Blade to an IBM x3650M2 rack mount). I'm getting an error when it tries to boot up. It gets past the grub part, but then errors out quickly with this error code...
I've done this before, but the other system I migrated didn't have a separate "/" and "/boot" partition. I think this may be why it's having an issue. It seems like "/boot" is actually /dev/sda1 and "/" is /dev/sda2 (from booting up RHEL rescue disk). I've tried changing fstab and grub.conf, but I think I may be missing something.

I've just installed Squeeze on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite C660D - adapter is a Realtek 8188CE) and was following the instructions on debian.org to set up WiFi. I've changed the source list, done the firmware update and the modprobe, but when I get to step 5 where it says to verify that I have a wireless interface, the output from iwconfig just lists lo, eth0 and pan0, all with "no wireless extensions". Does anyone have any ideas what I should do now?

I've got an Acer Aspire One. I don't like windows. I have used Ubuntu many times in the past and love it. I want to install it on this thing, but it's as minimalist a computer as it gets. No DVD drive or anything. It weighs about as much as a small bottle of soda. I have no access to USB Drives, External DVD drives, External floppies, external anything. I do have a cat but I don't think that's going to help. In fact, he's trying to step on my keyboard Anyway, I know you can do a "Frugal install" off the hard disk but I have absolutely no idea what it is.
What exactly is a frugal install? Can I partition the hard drive and leave my windows alone (Got some data, programs and porn holding me down) with a frugal install? Is there a difference between a frugal install and a fancy high-tech DVD install when it's finished (E.G Limitations, stability, chances of computer asploding)?

This happens at very irregular intervals. A week or two can go by with out this occurring, other times two or three times in one day. When these screenshots were taken, no applications were launched other than Top and Monitor. The laptop is mostly unusable when this is going on.
When I disconnect the wireless, everything quiets down. I can reconnect the wireless, and everything is back to normal. I have had this problem on two different laptops, with different Ubuntu versions.

I have a weird problem, i have an LG LCD screen that i connect to my laptop via HDMI through nVidia. I was watching full length movies and everything worked perfectly. So, i got myself a new, slightly bigger LG LCD, and now, when I play a movie, about 20-60 minutes into the movie, my machine just turns off. doesnt even shutdown properly, just turns itself off, as if the power ran out (which it didnt..)
I thought maybe i had too many things installed, or mabe i should wait for a new version.. so i waited till i reinstalled a fresh 10.4 on a new partition, played a movie, and again, the machine just suddenly turned itself off.
i tried looking in the system log viewer, but between shutdown and startup, i see nothing special (besides ALOT of "rt_ioctl_giwscan. 1(1) BSS returned, data->length = 105")..
i tried running 64bit & 32bit and it has the same error.

I'm at wits end...10.04 won't connect to a wireless network on my laptop, and that sort of makes it useless. What is the easiest way to revert back to 9.10? I have a dual-boot system with XP and I'd rather not have to start from scratch.

It looks like something must've slipped the attention of Ubuntu developers as in the previous LTS version laptop suspension after closing the lid worked perfectly fine for me (Dell Latitude D820) while after upgrading to Meerkat it doesn't work any more....well sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't - it behaves sort of like a weather in UK/Ireland ...anyway...is there more information I could provide to you guys or is there something you could give me to point me to the right direction ?

When I close my laptop and open it the screen become grey and blotchy with almost an argyle pattern. This has only started happening after I configured the usb ports to work in my VM. My startup screen also says something about a usb problem, and S for skip and M to manually fix it but I have had no problems with my usb. Oh except for my computer won't start

I just installed 10.04 on an Acer 4736 laptop and was prompted for a software update of about 170 MB.
I went through with the update downloads and installation, got an error message of some packages not being found, and clicked on the "close" button on the dialogue to finish with the whole thing.
Now the Update Manager window with the grayed-out package updates didn't go away, and the cursor would always show the "busy" circle thing. I waited for a while, but nothing happened. I tried opening Firefox to check for anything about this on the net, but it wouldn't open.
So I left it alone, and it the screen went black (screensaver, I guess). When I tried to get back to the desktop, I couldn't. Screen wouldn't respond and it stayed black; no password prompt or anything.
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace wouldn't take me back to the login screen either.

I just installed Fedora 11 on my HP Compaq laptop that had the original factory disk layout (Vista, a big 290GB partition and two other for rescue stuff).
The procedure was the following:
1. I resized the largest partition from 290GB to 270GB using gParted. I could boot normally to Vista after that;
2. Installed Fedora normally using the free 20GB.
After the installation I cannot boot anymore. After the BIOS post the text message shows up:
Non-System disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready
Did any of you come across this problem before? Is there anything I can do to fix it or at least be able to log into Vista (this is my work laptop...)?

I'm trying to install Fedorad 9 on my windows Vista dell xps laptop in a seperate partition. I can't seem to make my laptop boot off of the DVD i'm burning the Fedora ISO to. I'm just using Windows, not Nero or anything like that. I've changed the boot options in setup, burned the ISO to the DVD and rebooted but I end up in Windows. By the way, should I just go ahead and use Fedora 10 as a new user or has it been "debugged"? I don't need any additional "new version" problems at this point.

I had experience with earlier Red Hat Linux dual boot with Windows 98 and XP. I now have Fedora 9 and also a Compaq Presario CQ61 with Windows 7 Home edition. I have made it so that my Laptop now boots from its CD/DVD drive instead of the hard drive which it was. Only so far when I run Fedora's 9 Desktop Live CD everything seems OK until I get to a non graphics window for logging in and there I am stuck.how I am going to log in and go into Linux Fedora's windows view.

My laptop died while installing F12, without completing installation. Now I can not boot the computer from HD, CD, or USB. I have flashed the BIOS with the most recent ROM. I can access the BIOS setup and exhausted all my options there, which is mainly boot order. At the moment, the boot process goes to a blinking cursor and does not allow for input. The laptop in question is a lenovo Y510 that was previously running F10 with a single partition.

My FC12 laptop won't boot. During the attempted boot, after blue/white progress bars finish displaying on the bottom of screen, nothing more seems to happen. The screen isn't totally blank in that I seem to have a text cursor and keyboard input is displayed. But, no prompt, no login prompt, X isn't running, etc. If I hit ESCduring boot, it displays the boot messages and the boot sequence stops after "Starting atd". I'm not sure if it's related, but I had previously experimented with creating a new xorg.conf file by running "Xorg -configure' and was testing the new file with "X -?? /etc/x11/xorg.conf.new" (I forget what the -?? option was). I assumed that this would not overwrite the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file and that if I ran into problems, that the original xorg.conf would be in place. how I can get this miserable thing to boot?

I've been trying to boot an HP laptop (dv6-6135) with AMD APU A8-3500 from a F15 liveUSB. The machine gives an error message after trying to boot (the message is simplified):
Code:
... address space collision: host bridge window
[..] conflicts with Video ROM [..]
ACPI: [Package] has zero elements (..)
It does not matter if I try the x86 or the x86_64 version. What can I do to avoid this error and allow Linux to boot in the aforementioned laptop? I am sure the CPU with built-in graphics are to blame here, but a kernel parameter would solve the problem.

I'm having the weirdest thing with F13. I HAD a HP 8430 with docking station and external 22" monitor. Worked well, using the RADEONHD drivers. Now I have a HP 8530p laptop. At startup, as soon as the login would show, the screen (both laptop lid and external display) go black. To resolve, I have to disconnect the DVI connector to be able to see the login screen. After initialization of the laptop display (showing login screen) I can connect the DVI connector again.
When I'm logged in and have the DVI connector connected again, I go to GNOME monitor preferences and see, besides my laptop display, my external display, not once but TWICE. if I enable the wrong one, my screen goes black again. If I enable the right one, my external display works as expected. I made sure that the monitor is connected only ONCE with DVI.
I'm using a freshly installed F13 with the default setup, so RADEONHD is being used. My laptop has the following video device (from lspci): 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3650. The bad thing is I don't know where to go for analysis to get this fixed... any hints?
