I have been working with F13 since last summer and Kontact/Akonadi worked fine all this time. Two weeks ago, more or less, Akonadi started to crash every time I tried to start it. Therefore I can use Kmail but without geting access to my contacts, since I put them on a resource controlled by Akonadi.
Just now I have updated a lot of KDE modules, include Akonadi, but the result is the same. Hereafter you will find the entire akonadi-selftest-report:[URL]..
Has anyone had this issue? Tonight, when I started KMail I got a crash of the Akonadi maildir resource agent. Everything was fine in the morning, I didn't change anything or mess about, just a normal session. The crash report will go away if I close it 5 times or so. I have seen the problem in a couple of fora, apparently the best workaround is to rename the relevant file in /usr/bin (the file named akonadi_maildir_resource). Kmail is now functioning properly (I gather it is not yet fully integrated with Akonadi, so it shouldn't matter too much). I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and any solutions you might have.
I tried submitting a bug report via the automated process; unfortunately, when I tried downloading the debug tools I got stuck on an error in downloading the repo data from the update repository:
PackageKit Error repo-not-available: Failed to download ./repodata/cefcc9d56264aa169f70a53c560ffc39cb6af575-deltainfo.xml.gz from Index of /update/11.3
I assume the repo update issue is a temporary mistake in the update process? Send me any thoughts on the akonadi issue, please!
I just downloaded OpenOffice 3.2.1 from the openoffice.org weebsite. I followed the instructions precisely and everytime ended up in the same error message - 'error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)'. I am using Fedora 13.
Kmail 1.13.2 Problem on startup, error is from nepomuk, data storage. "cannot find Redland backend, nepomuk is disabled until fixed. Also see the following error from the akonadi console:

error: failed to init transaction(unable to lock database)if you're sure a package manager is not already running, you can remove /var/lib/pacman/db.lck and there was the same error when i try to install a package. I recently did a full system update could that be the problem?
Ubuntu 9.10 on a 1.4 Ghz system (old HP desktop) I copied over 5000 mp3's to the hard drive. Tell Rythmbox to play all in the music folder and Shuffle is on.It runs for 20 to 30 hours and locks up starting any random mp3 or crashes. On this same box I have Zoneminder running 4 cameras on Monitor only. Zm never crashes. I tried the Amrock player and it dies even sooner with much the same fate.
I'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on my laptop. I don't restart the system unless there's an update that requires me to, preferring to use the Suspend feature instead. However, I noticed that after an uptime of a few days, the screen doesn't lock anymore. Neither the shortcut 'Ctrl+Alt+L', nor the terminal command 'gnome-screensaver-command --lock' seem to work. I'm sure restarting the system will enable me to lock again, but I don't think I should restart just to get this feature back.
Does anyone know why this happens? Is there some other way to lock the screen?
The Hardware: A 2 month old Asus EeePC 1008HA. 1.66 Ghz Atom, 1 Gb RAM, GMA945 integrated graphics, 160gb HDD. The OS: Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix (also tested regular Ubuntu 9.10 and Kubuntu 9.10 LiveUSBs). The Problem, In short: Ubuntu locks up after 5-30 seconds of logging in. Most of the time the Capslock light starts flashing, indicating a kernel panic. Also happens when booting off a LiveUSB, although using the ACPI=Off option from the LiveCD allows it to run without crashing.
The Problem, Long Version: Up until yesterday afternoon, the netbook had been working fine. I plugged in my 3G USB Modem, and Ubuntu locked up, with the caps lock light flashing, only way to restart was by holding in the power button until the netbook turned off. Unplugged the USB, restarted, plugged it back in again, same thing happened. Didn't use the netbook again for a few hours, but when I next came to use it, the netbook would crash shortly after logging in.
I ran MemTest for 8 hours over-night, and it came up with no errors. Figured it might be a corrupted HDD or install, so I reformatted the hard-drive and tried to re-install UNR 9.10, however the LiveUSB will also freeze shortly after the desktop is displayed. Using the ACPI=Off option let me at least boot in and re-install Ubuntu, however it's still crashing after logging in. Fsck comes up clean. If I use the ACPI=off option in GRUB, the netbook will boot, however it'll be very sluggish and will crash as soon as I try to connect to a network (Wireless, wired or USB 3G).
The clean UNR9.10 install uses the 1.6.31-14 kernel. I've somehow managed to get it sort-of running with a net connection and a terminal at the moment, so I'm running an update to see if that will fix anything, but I'm not too hopeful. If this is a hardware problem, that's fine, since the netbook is still under warranty, but I'd rather exhaust all my software solutions before I send the netbook away.
When I started my session, a box saying: "An error occurred the startup of the Akonadi server. The following self-tests are supposed to help to tracking down and solving the problem. When requesting support or reporting bugs, please always include this report:
I have accidentally locked myself out in the following manner. I have Fedora 13 with SElinux. The whole hard drive was encrypted at install with Fedora's standard method. Upon logging into a non-root account called "hoss", I set the policy (in gnome) System menu -> Administration -> SElinux administration -> User Mapping -> added the logged on user as a SElinux user with only user_u privileges. After reboot, I successfully log in as hoss, but now I get an error when trying to open the SElinux administration, any open office program, or any task requiring elevation with root password (the prompt never comes up). What is worse is I did not set the ability to login the console as root. This user now does not have write privileges to any of root's documents. I cannot access the hard drive from a remote source because it is encrypted. Is there any way whatsoever to now elevate myself to root to reconfigure SElinux? When I open the SElinux administration Should there not be a prompt that gives me a root password to be able to correct SElinux by removing "hoss" from the list? As of right now this account seems to be totally unable to be elevated to higher privileges. I cannot even use the Add/Remove software feature to apply patches to SElinux without a root password. Elevating to su in bash is also blocked.
I start Kmail, Akonadi tries to start a server and it fails (I removed the first 5 tests that were correct because otherwise this post would be to long). This is the report it gives:

What can I do to let it start correctly, or is there a way to disable Akonadi? It's very annoying that every time I start Kmail, Akonadi attempts to start.
i recently installed the banshee media player using yum extender. Everytime i run it i get this error " a crash in mono-core-2.4.2.3-2.fc12 has been detected" how can i fix this problem?
I tend to get constant crashes when using internet browsers ( Google Chrome and Firefox ) basically the application hangs not moving in any way, then eventually completely freezes up, the system then locks up and finally crashes.
Upon system re-start I get "Read Error" at boot ( No further information, it literally just says "Read Error" ).
It is sometimes fixed by going into the BIOS and select "Hold on No Error".
I tried installing OpenBios to see if using different BIOS firmware would resolve the issue, but the OpenBios install failed ....so no dice there either.
I am trying to work out if it is a hard drive problem or if it is purely a problem with Fedora.
It was working fine for a couple of months and when it does boot up ... the system works fine, ( Until another crash ).
It seems like the internet browsers crash the system and then the system crashes and can then no longer remember how to boot up.
what this could be that could be software based....if not it looks like I will need a new hard-drive.
I'm using Fedora 14. I need to install an older version of MySQL for some testing at work. To do so, I go to remove the existing MySQL 5.1.x that is installed - a dependency of Akonadi. Well, the ensuing chain of dependencies ended up essentially killing KDE. I don't suppose there is a convenient way to get KDE back without Akonadi? I really don't care if I have PIM storage services.
Akonadi control process not registered at D-Bus. Details: The Akonadi control process is not registered at D-Bus which typically means it was not started or encountered a fatal error during startup. How can I solve this?
Code: innodb_data_file_path=ibdata1:10M:autoextend:max:1000M can anyone tell me what happens when ibdata1 reaches the maximum size of 1000M? Does it break? Does it not allow writes? Does it delete old data? I searched everywhere online for answers and came up empty handed. Sorry, i know this is not an Ubuntu question but rather a MySQL question. It is running on an Ubuntu Server though
i have consistently had one problem since i started using ubuntu a couple of days ago, when i try to install or update anything i get the error message 'unable to get exclusive lock'. It says that this probobally means that another software management program is running however using system monitor none are apparent. I am currently trying to use the update manager however i was having the same problem while installing flash player yesterday.
I know its been a few years since this post was made but, im having the same problem as guts and glory. So i did the things you said and it still says "status database area is locked by another process"
After i wrote 'sudo apt-get clean all' it didnt say anything but /home/user/
All i want to do is to enable desktop mode. So i can then install programs like vlc media player for watching movies
Edit: ok i don't know where the rest of the post went?! So when i type in 'sudo synaptic' i get a error saying "Unable to get exclusive lock - This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) already running. Please close that application first."
And when i type "sudo dpkg --configure -a" i get "dpkg: status database area is locked by another process"
I use web server apache use php fastcgi (Centos 5.2, apache 2.2.9 , php 5.2.5 and fcgi-2.2.4 ). I receive error : "The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. contact the server administrator, no-reply@zz.vn and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. I view log :
So I was trying to run this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. But then it stopped working in the terminal, so i got this:E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?So then I ran this: sudo fuser -cuk /var/lib/dpkg/lock; sudo rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/lock..Which blanked my screen. I booted to a terminal and I ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. All my files are there, I ran -ls. Any advice as to how to log on graphically again?Also-when I turn on the computer, it says the screen graphics card and the like were not detected properly.
I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.
On my windows console, i have installed sun virtualbox. I only have 768MB ram and so i downloaded a trial version of eboostr. I thought it would work, but when i tried an install of 11.2, also, i tried a debian install, it did the same thing, it froze up in the middle of the install with the error Code: unable to allocate and lock memory. I guess that eboostr doesn't work, but is there a way to use a flash drive as ram in virtual box?
I am currently new to ubuntu. I would like to install jdk 6 in ubuntu. I've tried to install using this command: sudo apt-get instal. But in the end, I only got this result: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? I've tried many times and still it doesn't works.
I recently tried to upgrade to 10.04 but during the upgrade my powerpack failed. Now 10.04 has been installed but I cannot access Synaptic through the drop down menu it says "Unable to get an exclusive lock". I've tried accessing it through Terminal which works but then the only option I have is to Partial Upgrade but then that freezes at the first stage saying the old database can't access the new (or something along those lines) then that screen just remains there. Also when I minimise any windows I have open they don't appear at the bottom of the screen I have to go to multi screen to find them.
red minus sign next to internet and following states..... E: Type 'cat' is not known on line 45 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list E: Unable to lock the list directory
Unable to lock directory /var/cache/apt/archives/ Whenever I use sudo apt-get to install my apps in the terminal this pops up when its almost done downloading.
