Ubuntu 9.10 on a 1.4 Ghz system (old HP desktop) I copied over 5000 mp3's to the hard drive. Tell Rythmbox to play all in the music folder and Shuffle is on.It runs for 20 to 30 hours and locks up starting any random mp3 or crashes. On this same box I have Zoneminder running 4 cameras on Monitor only. Zm never crashes. I tried the Amrock player and it dies even sooner with much the same fate.
The Hardware: A 2 month old Asus EeePC 1008HA. 1.66 Ghz Atom, 1 Gb RAM, GMA945 integrated graphics, 160gb HDD. The OS: Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix (also tested regular Ubuntu 9.10 and Kubuntu 9.10 LiveUSBs). The Problem, In short: Ubuntu locks up after 5-30 seconds of logging in. Most of the time the Capslock light starts flashing, indicating a kernel panic. Also happens when booting off a LiveUSB, although using the ACPI=Off option from the LiveCD allows it to run without crashing.
The Problem, Long Version: Up until yesterday afternoon, the netbook had been working fine. I plugged in my 3G USB Modem, and Ubuntu locked up, with the caps lock light flashing, only way to restart was by holding in the power button until the netbook turned off. Unplugged the USB, restarted, plugged it back in again, same thing happened. Didn't use the netbook again for a few hours, but when I next came to use it, the netbook would crash shortly after logging in.
I ran MemTest for 8 hours over-night, and it came up with no errors. Figured it might be a corrupted HDD or install, so I reformatted the hard-drive and tried to re-install UNR 9.10, however the LiveUSB will also freeze shortly after the desktop is displayed. Using the ACPI=Off option let me at least boot in and re-install Ubuntu, however it's still crashing after logging in. Fsck comes up clean. If I use the ACPI=off option in GRUB, the netbook will boot, however it'll be very sluggish and will crash as soon as I try to connect to a network (Wireless, wired or USB 3G).
The clean UNR9.10 install uses the 1.6.31-14 kernel. I've somehow managed to get it sort-of running with a net connection and a terminal at the moment, so I'm running an update to see if that will fix anything, but I'm not too hopeful. If this is a hardware problem, that's fine, since the netbook is still under warranty, but I'd rather exhaust all my software solutions before I send the netbook away.
I have been working with F13 since last summer and Kontact/Akonadi worked fine all this time. Two weeks ago, more or less, Akonadi started to crash every time I tried to start it. Therefore I can use Kmail but without geting access to my contacts, since I put them on a resource controlled by Akonadi.
Just now I have updated a lot of KDE modules, include Akonadi, but the result is the same. Hereafter you will find the entire akonadi-selftest-report:[URL]..
I just downloaded OpenOffice 3.2.1 from the openoffice.org weebsite. I followed the instructions precisely and everytime ended up in the same error message - 'error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)'. I am using Fedora 13.
When i connect windows server 2003 from ubuntu these error displayed .When i installing the tsclient, by executing these following command from a Terminal window:
sudo apt-get install tsclient
When i run these command the following error displayed.
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/) , are you root?
I have pidgin2.5.2. I want to install pidgin2.6.6.How can I do that?E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls
I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.
I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.
I am having a very annoying problem with my laptop.I am experiencing many freezes. When my laptop freezes, it shows the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking. At first I thought it was a problem with flash (here is original thread: URL... )In the original thread, I thought the freeze's were being caused by the flashplayer, but it apparently isn't the case. The last time I experienced the freeze, I was playing around with the compiz desktop effects.
I am trying to get rythmbox to play my music. I used the yum install from the thread [URL].. It installed the gstreamer, however when I attempt to play music it doesn't unfortunately. Any comments on something simple I am missing or is there some other yum syntax I can use that can take care of this?
I'm having a buggy problem with rythmbox under F14. Sometimes when I start playing a audio cd or mp3 file Rythmbox will play about 2 seconds of the file then pause playback. When this happens it wont let me restart playback. I have to shutdown Rythmbox and restart it and try again.
I have all the latest updates, running on a Dell Latitude D510 laptop.
i am trying to install banshee from source and from apt.......but after install it doesnt show up on menu didnt try rythmbox but help with any one of them is fine.....
When i log in as root, and try to click the lock screen button, lock screen doesnt work? Is it disabled by default?is there anyway to lock screen when logged in as root
I use ubuntu 9.10. Recently two sound control icons appeared in the panel so I tried removing one and now both are gone. Also the rythmbox icon does not appear anymore either after I open the program.
There have been a few capabilities I've wanted to add to conky lately, chiefly mail, music, and forecasts. I installed some debs from [URL]... and I was wondering how I activate them.
Rythmbox does not open a window on the desktop, but its icon appears in the upper taskbar. I have to click on the icon to open the Rythmbox window to select songs etc.
I'm sure there's a simple fix for this, but I haven't been able to locate it.
The other day I got a SMC Network EZ-Stream Internet SMCWAA-G radio device and I am having some issue serving music to it from Linux.
It says it runs with MusicMatch or Rhaposdy on Windows. I want to run this from my Linux CentOS system.
So I was looking at Rythmbox which is on the OS already .
I have my mp3 and dvs on a Buffalo link station. I can mount the drive and see the music files OK at the browser level.
When I go into Rythmbox and select the files to be loaded into the library they appear to be grayed out.
Also I cannot select an entire older. I want to take everything in my mp3 dir that has my music broken out via artist and type etc.
Can this SW also be used to server out to my device like MusicMatch or Rhapsody? How do I configure the sw to be a server and run in the background?
I dont want to leave a windows system up on-line just for Music. I prefer Linux.
Is there other sw that might be better fro this function?
The device works fine on the network and gets Internet radio fine.
I just looked at the error file for Rythmbox and notice an error of
The GStreamer plugins to decode "MP3" files cannot be found
What is that? I tried a yum install gstreamer And I got the following : Setting up Install Process Package gstreamer-0.10.20-3.el5.i386 already installed and latest version Nothing to do
Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.
I recently installed Ubunut 9.10, and I plugged my Ipod 5g nano in, and Rythmbox detected the music and played everything. When I was done, I unplugged everything. Okay, so I did this iver a few days, but everynow and then, Ubuntu would freeze when my ipod was plugged in. Now when I unplug my ipod, it dosent detect any songs. But when I plug it into any computer (mac, windows, linux, etc.) itdetects the music and i can play it. But when unplugged, my ipod says no music is detected.
I used the script mentioned here [URL] to convert some wma files to mp3 however rhythmbox will not import these. Is this to do with the way they were conveted? Is there a better way or will converting wma to mp3 always result in this? Was going to try soundconverter but I wasn't sure if this would just do the same thing.
