Ubuntu :: Sudo-apt Get Not Working - Not Get Lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock Resource Temporarily Unavailable

Jun 12, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]

The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.

The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'

I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Lock Administration Directory

Jan 11, 2011

So I was trying to run this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade. But then it stopped working in the terminal, so i got this:E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?So then I ran this: sudo fuser -cuk /var/lib/dpkg/lock; sudo rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/lock..Which blanked my screen. I booted to a terminal and I ran apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. All my files are there, I ran -ls. Any advice as to how to log on graphically again?Also-when I turn on the computer, it says the screen graphics card and the like were not detected properly.

I found another thread similar to my question here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-issue-535818/

But I don't understand what the solution is. I believe this has something to do with the permissions on the directory im trying to check out so I did chmod 777 on subdirectory in /cvs(my cvsroot directory) and I was able to checkout subdirectory afterwards, but I still get the same error.

Ubuntu :: Sudo Broken - No Such File Or Directory

Mar 15, 2010

In Ubuntu 9.10, sudo was working properly except it would not let me run speedy as sudo. I would get an error message, which I believe stated "No such file or directory. However, I could run the command as my regular user (being prompted it needed escalated privileges), and I could run the user as root. So I tried to "fix" it so that I could run it via the sudo command. My fix, in turn, ended up breaking sudo. I edited a file which contained the directories for PATH (I made a backup of said file), and that didn't work. It further broke sudo. So I attempted to restore the backup file, however, sudo was still just as broken.

Now, whenever I try to execute any command with sudo I get:
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for tim:
env: -i: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo gedit
env: gedit: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo apt-get update
env: apt-get: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo nautilus
env: nautilus: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo update-manager
env: update-manager: No such file or directory
tim@linux-hp:~$ sudo speedy deploy
env: speedy: No such file or directory

I have since upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3, with mild hopes that the upgrade would remedy my problem, but alas - it did not. How to get sudo back to a working condition?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Exclusive Lock

May 7, 2010

I know its been a few years since this post was made but, im having the same problem as guts and glory. So i did the things you said and it still says "status database area is locked by another process"

After i wrote 'sudo apt-get clean all' it didnt say anything but /home/user/

All i want to do is to enable desktop mode. So i can then install programs like vlc media player for watching movies

Edit:
ok i don't know where the rest of the post went?! So when i type in 'sudo synaptic' i get a error saying "Unable to get exclusive lock - This usually means that another package management application (like apt-get or aptitude) already running. Please close that application first."

And when i type "sudo dpkg --configure -a" i get "dpkg: status database area is locked by another process"

Ubuntu :: Use The Sudo Command To Edit Anything Out Side The Home Directory?

Jan 29, 2011

I am here with a troublesome question about my new Ubuntu set up. Well as I've found out that you have to use the Sudo command to edit anything out side the home directory. Well I am using L.A.M.P. Server on my computer so I can host a small forums. Well for example like lets say I install Word press Blog onto my lamp server and I want to install a theme well when i go to install a theme i can not because WPB can't install the theme because of the security stuff on Ubuntu!

Well I want to know if there is some kind of command or program i can use that will get rid of all the security stuff were i can edit stuff nice and easy. Like something that can give me FULL control over the OS so no more commands because I am going to be running a Vbulliten forums which needs themes and plug ins, well i want be able to install them because this OS will not let me!

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Upgrade Failed - Unable To Get Exclusive Lock

I recently tried to upgrade to 10.04 but during the upgrade my powerpack failed. Now 10.04 has been installed but I cannot access Synaptic through the drop down menu it says "Unable to get an exclusive lock". I've tried accessing it through Terminal which works but then the only option I have is to Partial Upgrade but then that freezes at the first stage saying the old database can't access the new (or something along those lines) then that screen just remains there. Also when I minimise any windows I have open they don't appear at the bottom of the screen I have to go to multi screen to find them.

Fedora :: 15 - Unable To Lock Screen

Aug 8, 2011

I'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on my laptop. I don't restart the system unless there's an update that requires me to, preferring to use the Suspend feature instead. However, I noticed that after an uptime of a few days, the screen doesn't lock anymore. Neither the shortcut 'Ctrl+Alt+L', nor the terminal command 'gnome-screensaver-command --lock' seem to work. I'm sure restarting the system will enable me to lock again, but I don't think I should restart just to get this feature back.

Does anyone know why this happens? Is there some other way to lock the screen?
