If you need to to exclude one or mode user from your gdm login window you must edit "/etc/gdm/gdm.schemas" and add the user you want exclude from the <key> "greeter/Exclude" (near the other user in <default></default>)
When Fedora could have a gdm config again?
I am looking for a default, or starting "exclude list" for system backups. We are currently using Symantec Backup Exec, but I also do not think that is important to this question. I would think that the Oracle "lock" files and the /var/run/*.pid files can be excluded from the backup, and probably the dell file also. Can some provide a list of files/directories that can be excluded (from backup) for RHEL 5?

I have three Suse Linux pcs on my network.
I'll call them desktop, media center and laptop.
I am logged in to my desktop , I want to open a new session and log in to my media center.
From GUI, I select application launcher - leave -switch user and get a fresh kdm greeter screen.
On the Greeter screen, I select Menu - Remote Login
A window opens displaying three machines - my desktop, my laptop and my media center.
When I move the mouse into the new window to select the media center as the new target machine, the window immediately closes.
I have Xdmcp access enabled in kdmrc on all three systems(and rebooted).
This did work fine back when I was on KDE45 and KDE46.
Is there a new permission or setting now under KDE47?
I got Fedora 10 and I installed a proftpd server it works in local network but not from outside. Actually I can see it checks for user and pass but when it has to list the user dir it freeze. The server is behind a router. I am using passive ports 60000-60100 and I forwarded all connections to and from 21 to 60000-60100 onto internal (192.168.0.109) IP address.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my Fedora 11 x86_64 computer I have installed OOo 3.1.1 from www.openoffice.org because I need features that Fedora disabled in the repository version. And the latter also shows up in Software Update. Now, I went around and around with this and I know that installing the 1.3.1.1 package will break my OOo. I don't want Software Update even to list the 1.3.1.1 package because sooner or later I will slip up and install it on accident.
Side note: Why does Software Update think 1.3.1.1 is newer than 1.5.1? If it really is newer, someone at OOo needs to learn arithmetic.I think I can add an exclude line to /etc/yum.conf. But I can't figure out the syntax, and I don't know which package to exclude - the one I don't want updated or the alleged update package? Both? Or just the first part "openoffice.org-ure"?
I had to uninstall f10 from my system because it would lock up my system anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes into using it and noone could tell me why.
NOW, I put 9 back on my system and after it updates everything, it locks up again. it does give me the option of the new kernel and the original install's kernel and if I choose the original to boot with, I don't have any problems.
SO, is there any way to fix it, OR to exclude the kernel and initrd from being updated?
Sorry if this is the wrong place to inquire. I was wondering if it is possible to install fedora without any remote administration tools in particular SSH?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a dual monitor setup using TwinView running an up-to-date Ubuntu 11.04 amd64. The GDM (login) greeter is displayed in the center of the screen, and thus, one half of the greeter is on the left monitor and the other half is on the right monitor. I've been trying to find away to move the greeter to only one monitor. I've searched Google and the forums for an answer.
Here's what I've tried:
1) gmdsetup => does not have an option to position the greeter
2) gconf-editor => does not have an option to position the greeter
3) ubuntu-tweak => does not have an option to position the greeter
4) Tried these settings in
/etc/gdm/custom.conf, /etc/gdm/gdm.conf,
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf-custom, /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf:
Code:
[greeter]
SetPosition=true
PositionX=200
PositionY=300
5) Mucked around with
/usr/share/gconf/schemas/gdm-simple-greeter.schemas ,
/usr/share/gdm/gdm-greeter-login-window.ui,
/var/lib/dpkg/info/gdm.conffiles
My web server has Centos 5.3 installed and uses webmin for the administration.Recently the login hangs on a black background with the mouse animation. After a long time I get the message "The greeter application appears to be crashing. Attempting to use a different one."I click OK and the message just repeats.
The web server is running fine and all the applications are still active.I can access the server via SSH.Also, I can login via my vncserver from another computer and access the gnome and kde interfaces.
I want to know if there is any way that one could remove the user list from the login screen requiring the user to type in their user name. I am not quite sure why this feature is not implemented and it is one of the very few things I don't like about Lucid but hopefully there is a fix for it.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy girlfriend has a Toshiba Satellite Athlon64 laptop, and she can't get it to go past the user list dialog before it logs all the way in. We've tried her username and password, but every time we enter it, the screen blanks for a moment and then returns to the user list dialog. I've reset the password by booting to terminal, but it still won't let us past the dialog. I'd hate to have to reinstall her system. Is there any way we can get past this? And, why is it not accepting the password? I couldn't find an open bug on this issue.
Also, we had just installed OpenShot Video Editor during the same session. She said she got it from the Synaptic Package Manager. I'm not sure if this messed with her video settings. We can see X trying to start after we put the password in, but it keeps going back to the user list dialog. Actually, I uninstalled OpenShot and gnome-screensaver from the root prompt, just in case they were causing the issue. I had noticed that the laptop was buggy coming in and out of hibernation. I wonder if that's causing X not to start properly? I did check the startup logs and I didn't see any errors there either.
In Ubuntu 9.10 I was able to remove the user list from gdm. However in 10.04 I am unable to do this. I searched the forums with no luck.
I opened gconf-editor using sudo and went to apps>gdm>simple-greeter. I then checked disable_user_list.
After complete shutdown, I was still placed in the list screen. I checked gconf-editor and the disable_user_list was still checked.
Is there a way I can list all open files by a user? I found the command lsof but it the command lists too many files some of which are not used directly by the user. What I want is to view only the files that are currently open like text files, documents, pictures etc and not other system files.

I today upgraded to 11.4 using a downloaded DVD.
I was at 11.3/kde4.6.1. I did a clean install of 11.4, reusing my /home partition from 11.3. This is a desktop, legacy ATI (uses RADEON driver)
After the install process, I ran YAST-Software Management to grab recent updates.
Rebooted system, all seemed OK.
I then added the KDE46/11.4 repo, ran YAST and performed a "Switch to files in this repo" to move to 4.6.1.
I logged out, but cannot log back in, I simply return to the Greeter GUI after a brief blip.
Logging in to console, I don't see anything definitive in /var/log/* as to what the problem might be.
I have tested this on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit many times . Use at your own risk.
1. Enter command in terminal.
Code:
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow
2. Close terminal and reboot .
3. Make changes to greeter box using appearance preferences by selecting a theme that supports color change . Use Customize > Controls > Colors to change colors of the box and text.
4. Close Appearance Preferences and log in .
5. Enter command in terminal.
Code:
sudo unlink /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/gnome-appearance-properties.desktop
6. Close terminal and reboot .

This is the global system user list, which was retrieved during the scan by exploiting one or more vulnerabilities.

To prevent your host from being attacked, do one or more of the following:
RESULT:
So.. How can I prevent this scanner to reveal user names, in my case root ? Please help, It is mandatory for me to correct these issue.
Sometimes my user list is empty on start-up. When it happens the buttons beneath the empty list (shutdown, suspend and restart), are not responding. As a work-around I login to the first terminal as root to restart the machine and usually my normal user account appears back on the list. This morning the reboot work-around didn't work any more..
