May 12, 2010Can I disable grub while using wubi, it's annoying going through two boot loaders, especially since grub started showing a lot more partitions that what exist for some odd reason.

Nov 27, 2010I wanted to install ubuntu via wubi, but i had to format my partitions (can't do it on wubi ) so i used a crappy program(i don't remember the name) to get rid of Backtrack4 , because i wanted windows kept for my mom.So, that was the sorry, i've ended up with a GRUB error 22, and a Backtrack4 CD stuck in my DVD-rom.So my question is: Can somewone tell me how to fix error 22? (i've seen some methods online, but i obviously can't put a Windows CD in my DVD rom because the Backtrack4 DVD is stuck in there.

May 14, 2011The "Check if already posted" brings up no results. I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 with Wubi on my Window7 Home Premium laptop. No problems, except that I can't find "System" to make adjustments, specifically:
(1) Disable touchpad (it is disabled in Windows7).
(2) The display is only using about two-thirds of the screen (11.6" Samsung X120). In the Windows7 setup I do have the resolution set at 125% because the fonts are terribly small otherwise on this quite high resolution display.
During the installation I was not taken thru settings screens for things like language, video, like I have been on the very rare occasions I've installed a Linux OS onto its own partition, presumably because Ubuntu 11.04 is being installed as part of Windows7.
Ubuntu :: Windows Not In GRUB After Install With WUBI?
Jan 11, 2010So, I converted a Vista user by enticing her with WUBI. She's a computer idiot, and she thinks Linux is great.
HOWEVER, she recently had Ubuntu muck up for her, so she uninstalled WUBI/Ubuntu and reinstalled it (9.10). Upon restart, GRUB presented no boot menu and went straight into Ubuntu. The funny thing is, under the GRUB configuration files, the timeout for the boot menu is set to 10. I tried the following (made sure to change the boot device to hda1,0 since fdisk shows her NTFS as /dev/sdb1):

No luck. No boot menu, no Windows option. I also tried the following:
Manual Windows Entry (with /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober made unexecutable)

Using THIS method, the boot loader did appear, but there was no Windows option. Odd. So, I'm at a blocking point. Yes, I was smart enough to run update-grub Thoughts? My replies may be a bit delayed - she's 2 hours away and I don't have direct access to her computer.

May 12, 2010I had a bad experience with 9.04 - I installed some recommended system updates, and the updated GRUB killed my installation (which is WUBI), not letting me boot.
I've now installed 10.04, and some updates have come through, one of which is GRUB. So I'm now looking at the "Configuring grub-pc" dialogue box that's popped up, and there's an option to "Continue without installing GRUB?".
What are the risks here? Is my 10.04 WUBI system going to die if I upgrade GRUB again? Or is it going to die if I don't upgrade GRUB?

Aug 18, 2010I beleive I had version 9.x installed. I upgraded once and everything was fine. I went the upgrade manager again and it found some more upgrades. The upgrade messed with grub. It then told me there were no new upgrades. Then I rebooted and it says
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5
Then the screen clears and there is some text I can't read and then it says command not found. Then it reboots.
Is there a way to fix this?
If not is there a way to recover the files from the disk image file.

Jan 1, 2010My Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.

Jan 5, 2011Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data

May 5, 2010I've just reinstalled 10.04 LTS, after my update from 9.10 to 10.04 made some weird errors. So everything is good now, the problems before were fixed by the reinstall.By the reinstall, grub2 were installed aswell. Before, I ran grub1 (I guess) and at bootup it didnt show the list of boot choices you have, like safe boot or other OS if you have multi boot. It just booted up and I could press ESC if I wanted the menu. That disapperead after I installed grub2, so how do I get this function back, I kinda liked it.
One more question, after the reinstall I setup the taskbar and by mistake I remove the sound control. How do I get this back, it's not in the "Add to panel" when I right click on the taskbar.

I have endured a lot of problems with grub and kernel problems etc but now realise that its just the Wubi inside windows! I have it all set up with the cube to perfection and all drivers are running great after a bit of tweaking. So a bit of a lazy question really, can I install it properly onto my drive, and retain all the hard work I have put in setting it up? I have tried, but when it comes to selecting the drive that the Wubi is installed on it just says format with no backup option.

Sep 2, 2010I have two linux boxes A and B. Each of them have serial ports (ttyS0 on both) and these ports are connected using null modem serial cable. "A" box is always on and it has getty process on its ttyS0 (I need this getty for serial communication). If I reboot box B, it doesn't boot default entry - just displays grub os select table. After some investigation I realized that getty process on A sends some data to grub on B while it's booting and grub behaves the same way as if some key is pressed during timeout period - it doesn't boot default and waits for interactive user response. I need to reboot B remotely so its no good for me.

Jan 7, 2010We have a computer lab at school that ITS is trying to get ready before the semester starts. ITS is willing to put a wubi install on all the windows 7 machines in the lab after some faculty asked for a linux option. However they don't really support linux and basically need our help if any problems arise. After getting one machine to boot up nicely they used symantec ghost to make an image and put it on all the machines (I don't know the details on this but this is what I gather). However, no machine will boot into Ubuntu 9.10 unless one edits the boot options upon choosing Ubuntu from the windows 7 bootloader. I suspect there is a subtle problem that lies from ghosting the one machine.
