Mar 27, 2010I'm re-posting here since I've gotten no response in the Installation & Upgrades Forum.
While running the Update Manager my system froze and all that I knew to do was power down and power up again. I restarted the Update Manager and still have errors.

This is not a crisis. I can re-boot and run without apparent errors. I thought about apt-get -f install but I don't understand enough. Is this a broken dependency problem? If this is a dependency problem will this (apt-get -f install) just clean-up the loose ends and then will the Update Manager pick up the pieces the next time I go through "check"? Is there possible harm doing this?
This system is at 9.10 and was up-to-date until I had this problem yesterday.
General :: Programs No Longer Showing In Task Bar - System Running Much Slower After Update
Apr 26, 2011using mint 10, now after updates my system is barely working. The programs were no longer showing in the task bar, and the system was running much slower.

This repeated over and over again. My temperature was never to high 40-55, and I found a suggestion to update my kernel to 2.6.37-020637. After doing so there is no longer the thermal limit exceeded error but the computer is still running poorly. The system is slow and again no programs are showing up in the task bar when open.
Fedora :: Comand Line To Update The System Via Yum Update?
Jan 28, 2011Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?

I've not changed contents of any of these. Then why does it show me this messages? I did install akmod for my Nvidia graphics card for which I followed the steps mentioned for nouveau.

Apr 11, 2010I'm running 12 (x64) on my dell inspiron 1525. It's been fine for 6months. Just updated it and now it is running incredible slow, I can't really use it, typing is delayed, opening prgrammes delayed, scrolling etc. The updates were just those that were flagged up on my desktop so I have no idea which particular update has caused this.

Aug 14, 2010I have an Acer Aspire netbook with 1GB RAM and 1.6 GHz dual-core 32-bit x86 chips. The KPackageKit / yum / rpm chain is running too slow for me. In addition to the time required to download any new packages or updates, it seems to require at least one full minute of processing time to install each package, update, or bug fix, no matter how small. Another full minute is consumed for each package in "cleaning up."Running yum from the command line takes nearly the same amount of time.During this time, I cannot run any other applications without severe thrashing. It seems that a full gigabyte of memory is in use with some 100M swapped out to disk.
Is there any way to reduce the running time and memory requirement of the update process?While not updating or installing software, I do not normally run out of memory (i.e. begin thrashing) until I have about a dozen browser tabs open, or the like.

Sep 3, 2010I fired up my PC this morning and not unusually got an update message. I updated all that I was instructed to, as per normal - and at the end of the update was told that I'd need to restart to effect changes. I was in the middle of something else at the time so I left it but I turned the PC off an hour or so later and left it.
On starting up again I cannot get my previous resolution (1600 x 1200) and Second Life resolutely refuses to run giving a "Window creation error". Trying to change the display settings from the System> Administration menu just stops: It asks for the root PW and then nothing happens
Clearly something's gone a bit pear shaped here. I'm using Fedora 12 wth a PAE kernel and on an AMD 5200 chip with an nvidia 7900GS card. Things worked fine until this update so I strongly suspect that to be the cause but what can I do to fix it? Is there any way to "roll back" the update somehow or is there a fix?

The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

Sep 30, 2009I was recently requested to try and convert a running system to RAID level 1. I did not succeed in this task. However, I am still interested in accomplishing this task in a test environment.What I did was create a RAID device with a device missing e.g.
mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb2
Once the RAID was up and running I created the /etc/mdadm.conf file so that it would activate the RAID device on boot. Once the device was created I copied all the data from the running root filesystem to the /dev/md0 device. The only directory that I didn't copy was the /proc directory. When I rebooted the machine I had a kernel panic and the system couldn't find /dev/root. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could provide some information/tips regarding the problem.

Dec 26, 2009I was updating my F12 and the system crashed .. no idea why.. anyway I cannot boot anymore using the kernel 2.6.31.9-174, but I can boot using the 2.6.31.6-166 ... now when I issue the yum update, the system says its up-to-date...is there any way to 'force' the yum to update the system again ?

Jul 11, 2011My system system suffers from frequent kernel panics, which I think are due to gnome-shell with the nVidia driver. (I see no panic message and nothing is logged, but I've enabled magic SysRq and it makes no difference.) Twice this has occurred during yum-update's install stage, which is making me wonder. Uum-update then complained about an unfinished transaction, so I ran yum-complete-transaction as suggested. I've also tried yum-clean-all and rebuilding the RPM database, suggested in other threads, but I'm still seeing the following errors on yum-update:

I don't know where these 32-bit packages have come from this is an x86-64 system and the only x86-32 stuff I've intended to install is the Adobe flash plug-in. Also the later dupes are different 64-bit versions. I've tried "package-cleanup --cleandupes" as suggested in this thread: [URL]. It wants to remove the old versions, but also wants to remove packages that depend on them, including clutter, so I cancelled that. The first time round I was left with a barely usable system and had to reinstall, which I'd rather avoid, especially if this is going to be a regular occurrence. I'm not familiar with RPM (or kernel panics for that matter).

May 31, 2010I am/was(?) running a dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium and Fedora 12 system on an AMD Phenom platform.
I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command
yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.
I removed the KDE with
yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"
This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.
I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.
I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.
