CentOS 5 :: Segmentation Fault Error When Trying 'yum Update' Or 'yum Check-update' After Running 'yum Clean'
Jul 26, 2011
On two Centos5 servers, yum gives a segmentation fault error when trying 'yum update' or 'yum check-update' after running 'yum clean' :
[Code]....
The error is the same for the other computer except while attempting to update the rpmforge repository. Nothing has really changed on the servers in some time and 'yum update' worked fine on each yesterday and I have no idea why they would both suddenly fail!

I have been a Windows user for many years but heard lots of good things about Ubuntu and wanted to give it a shot. I have a VMware ESXi 4.1 server so I created a new VM (Ubuntu desktop 32-bit), downloaded the Ubuntu 10.4 32-bit desktop image, mounted it, and started the installation. Everything worked fine and I got a working Ubuntu system. I created a snapshot just in case I need to get back to this position.
I then saw a prompt from Update Manager and decided to update everything it told me to, which is 300 updates. At the end, I was asked to restart and I did. At that point, the system was not willing to start again. Here is what I get (... stands for omitted text):
Segmentation Fault
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- check root delay ...
- check root ....
[Code]....
I have no clue what to do at this point. I tried going back to the snapshot a few times but always ended up in the same state after installing updates. I tried installing VMware tools before the running the update but it didn't make a difference.

I just installed today's updates (apart from XFCE, which I had installed from Robby's website) and get the following error when I try to start exaile:

Segmentation fault
I'm looking at the changelogs and can't figure out which one is the culprit.

For some reason, when I do a yum check-update I get a list of no changed packages to install. If I follow this immediately with a yum update then it tries to install drbd83. I've tried a yum clean all and repeated the commands and get the same thing. This happens on both the machines that are set up to use DRBD. Just seems weird and I don't understand. Anyone got an explanation?

I tried a little C programming, and got a bunch of segmentation fault the first few tries. But from what I understand, the whole purpose of segmentation faults is the protect other programs from the damaging effects of my program. Yet, if I trigger a segfault enough times, weird things happen to my other running programs. I usually run a console inside Kate, and after 10 or so segfaults, Kate sometimes freezes or randomly highlights text, etc. just random behavior. Also, my desktop will occasionally hang and things will start failing, like copying files and such. I have to log out to restore everything to normal, but logging out is difficult since the logout prompt freezes. I have never experienced such behavior before I began programming, my system has been relatively stable. I run my program from inside Kate's console, so I was wondering if all KDE applications share memory or something, because this has happened once or twice, and only when I trigger a segfault many times.

I did a Yum update last Friday. It was done before 5.6 was released so I still have 5.5 + various updates. Yum is now giving me a segmentation fault when I try to run it. I believe it has to do with an improperly synchronized version of sqlite which was updated and then Yum stopped working. I'm guessing that installing the latest Yum RPM will fix the dependency issues. Will this throw me out of sync with for instance updating to 5.6?

I have a centos server running nagios for monitoring. I restarted the machine, it is actually a console server anyway. After getting to the login screen, I typed in my user name but it never propt for my password. I can't even ssh into the system. So I tried to use the installation cd and enter into rescue mode where I typed chroot and was able to enter into the root environment. I was able to configure a network interface in the rescue mode and can ping the machine at this point, though can ssh still. In the root environment, I tried running couple commands. like try to restart the sshd. When I typed /etc/init.d/sshd restart, I got an error saying:
766 segmentation fault.
when I vi any thing I get error:
segmentation fault.
how can I solve this problem? What is causes this. Even in the event of restarting the machine, I see so many fails with segmentation fault.

When I compile my C program on SUSE, I receive a segmentation fault error. To my knowledge, this occurs when a program tries to recall memory but is not allowed to. So I'm using GDB for the first time to solve this problem. After a series of commands, I reach this point:
Code:
#0 0x00002b13e1bab127 in getdelim () from /lib64/libc.so.6
#1 0x000000000040167b in main () at dmsp_cusp.c:158
Here's the offending code in dmsp_cusp.c:
Code:
157 printf("enter the input file name:");
158 getline(in_fname);
159 fp3 = fopen(in_fname, "r");
160 if(fp3 == NULL) {
161 printf("can't open input file %s",in_fname);
162 exit(1); }

I have built a CentOS 5.6 kernel with the Preemption Model changed from Voluntary to Preemptible Kernel. Everything works fine except for gdb. When attempting to debug a binary using start or run there is a segmentation fault. If I attach to a running process everything works fine. I expect that I need to make an additional change to the kernel config file, but don't know what it might be. I'm using menuconfig to make the changes: Processor type and features --->Preemption Model ---> [x] Preemptible Kernel (Low-Latency Desktop).
gdb /bin/true
(gdb) run
Starting program: /bin/true
During startup program terminated with signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation Fault.

My centos linux mailserver has crushed and does not allow any login form any user including root. I have managed to start it in single user mode but using vi editor, df command gives segmentation fault. I suspect the /var/* is full but I can neither remove any file/folder/mail/logs nor copy these to make a backup.Attempt to do this as single user/root is met with readonly files yet I have given full permissions to the files and the folders.

I am getting this message: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate. for every compilation that takes longer (ie: linux kernel, kde sources etc.)
I've tried other OS (at that moment I was on Fedora 12, now on Debian; was a Suse also) and it didn't work. I've tried replacing my hard disk, since it needed an upgrade either ways - that didn't work either. I assumed that it's the RAM fault - tested them with memtest and it says they are fine. Does anyone know what else I can do in order to figure out where the problem is?

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 linux 2.6.28-11-generic. When I write a program that gives the "Segmentation fault" error, or when I send this signal (SIGSEGV) to a program, the "Segmentation fault" is shown and no core dumped. When I look for "core" file in the current directory, I can't find it, too.

I'm running CentOS 5.4.In the last three days I've started to get various cron errors:
/bin/sh: line 1: 7066 Segmentation fault /usr/local/scripts/cron.email.sshd.access/cron.email.sshd.access.pl
/bin/sh: line 1: 4822 Floating point exceptionsudo -u mobile getmail --quiet
Can't load '/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/RRDs/RRDs.so'
[code]...
Then yesterday I rebooted, and all the other errors seemed to have disappeared for now, but, I am now getting:
/bin/sh: line 1: 23600 Segmentation fault sudo -u mobile getmail --quiet
I have setup cron to call getmail once every 3 minutes, and I get this error about 4-6 times an hour.

I had Skype debian_2.2.0.35-1_amd64 on my Debian 2.6.32-5 amd64 and it was working without any problem. After re-installing my gnome desktop environment, my skype stopped working. I tried to re-install it. I found out it re-installs without any error but it doesn't launch and gives me "segmentation fault" error on terminal. I purged skype, deleted the .skype folder and installed it again with no luck. when I try to re-install skype via software center it says: "Sorry, 'skype' is not available for this type of computer (amd64)." what should I do to have the skype working on my system again?

I'm running ubuntu server 10.10 64 bit.
1. Set quota in /etc/fstab like this:
/dev/sdb1 /var/www reiserfs defaults,usrquota 0 2
2. Checked quotas:
# quotacheck -cavm
quotacheck: Your kernel probably supports journaled quota but you are not using it. Consider switching to journaled quota to avoid running quotacheck after an unclean shutdown.
3. Tried to activate quotas using "quotaon -a" and got a segmentation fault error.
When I change filesystem to ext3 (using mkfs.ext3 and changing /etc/fstab) it works well. So there are 2 problems, quotacheck warning about journaled quota and the segmentation fault error.
