2.6.29.6-217.2

Would it be ok to remove the earlier versions of dupes above, without adverse effects?
I've tried to use the GUI tool for update system in Fedora 10. It listed all of the available updates successfully, but it have not any response when i click the 'Update System' button~

Also this appears to have started after another user was using my system and crashed it. They said that it just shut-off with no explanation as to what happened.
lspci -v shows this

How do I get back to the systems default drivers?
I do NOT wish to have to reinstall F14 yet again because the system has been very stable since the last install.
Seems like the latest Kernel (2.6.40-4.fc15.i686) update screwed with my setup a little bit.
This is what happened:
I had about 100 updates to my F15 pending in my taskbar's update notifier.
I let the system update itself.
Reboot and desktop effects don't work.
Takes a long time to open up Dolphin.
electricsheep (OpenGL screen saver) doesn't work.
I'm assuming it's a problem with OpenGL or my nvidia video drivers which I tried reinstalling from mjmwired's guide.
That didn't fix anything.
I'm looking for a point in the right direction or a way to revert back to my previous state before the system updated everything.
Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 14. I need to install an older version of MySQL for some testing at work. To do so, I go to remove the existing MySQL 5.1.x that is installed - a dependency of Akonadi. Well, the ensuing chain of dependencies ended up essentially killing KDE. I don't suppose there is a convenient way to get KDE back without Akonadi? I really don't care if I have PIM storage services.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHow to remove X completely from the system?
As a Security practice I wanted to disable X from loading.
So i modified following line from /etc/inittab.
id:3:initdefault:
I was then able to start my machine in terminal mode(runlevel 3).
I wasn't satisfied at this stage as i was able to get the graphical console by merely typing code...
Now i have made the above line commented and removed execute bit of the file .
System is now behaving as i wish it would.
I have 2 questions here.
1)Is this Method considered to be stardard while removing X in linux distro.
Will it make any difference?
I m not using any application that explicitly use graphical user interface and i can work in runlevel 3.
2)Is any package responsible for loading X .If yes then removing shall remove X from the system, correct me if i m wrong.code...
Every time I log in, I get a "Boot Messages" indicator in my notification area. I click it and it shows me what happened during boot (uneventful, no error messages). I would like to remove this icon, it's very annoying. I can right click it and click quit but I don't like doing this every time I log in.
Is there an easy way to stop it from starting up (I couldn't find it in Startup Applications)?
I am using F14 Xfce and i have installed awn so i do not need my desktop icons anymore, ie home, bin and file system, is there any way to delete/remove them? i have installed gconf-editor and unchecked them in apps-->nautilus-->desktop, but they are still there?
View 2 Replies View RelatedUntil a recent software update, I encountered no problems when 'Safely Removing' my external hard drive.

I just installed linux Mint 9, although I was having the same exact problem with ubuntu 10.04. Just testing mint out for a bit. I am running on the 64 bit OS. When I got to select advanced visual effects, It goes to enable the drivers but then I get this message.
"SystemError: Failed to fetch [url] Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]"
It used to work before but then just stopped one day when I booted up. I use Docky, and it won't work without the drivers because it requires compositing to work properly. I am using a Nvidia GTX 260 video card if that has anything to do with it.
So I recently fresh installed Ubuntu 10.10, and after a few hiccups I got everything running fine, including the desktop effects with Compiz. So anyways, after a couple days of everything working fine, I ran an update, and rebooted. When Ubuntu booted back up and I logged in, all the effects were off. I opened up Compiz and all the boxes were unchecked. So I went to the appearance settings, tried to enable the "Extra" visual effects, and then the "Searching for drivers" box popped up. It ran for a little bit and then closed and said "desktop effects could not be enabled". So I checked the restricted drivers thing and the ATI proprietary driver is enabled and in use.
But whenever I try to enable the effects the screen just flickers, the window borders flicker for a second, and then the window pops up saying the desktop effects couldn't be enabled. The searching for drivers window only pops up like half the time.My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 3870, and I've tried reinstalling the drivers for it.Also, whenever I run compiz my window borders disappear entirely and don't pop up again until I try to enable desktop effects in the appearance settings. I've lurked the forums a bit, and I haven't been able to find anything that has fixed my problem.
Remove the sudo command software packages without damaging my system?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic on an Acer Aspire AO751h and very aware of the issues regarding the GMA500 ans psb drivers, and after reading all the forums I've finally accomplished to make it work just fine. Last week it performed an update via the update manager and since then I haven't been able to restore/run any of the compiz settings and found out that the problem is that it doesn't let me turn on my visual effects under the appearance settings. When I attempt to set them as normal or extra, it starts "searching for available drivers" then the screen blinks several times, goes black, hides every window and just shows me my desktop background and then come back again and displays "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As I mentioned before, Compiz was running fine and I had no issues with the visual effects prior to the last update perfomed a week ago. Can you help me please?? If you need further information I'll be more than glad to provide them tou you, this is driving me nuts!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Slackware 13.37 on a new hard drive today. After booting in to KDE everything seemed to be working as normal. I hadn't yet installed my video drivers but I still have the limited eye candy afforded by default. After that I switched to XFCE and transferred some data over (for some reason Dolphin hates certain folders of mine) and when I logged back in all the desktop effects were inactive. When I selected desktop effects from the menu I saw the message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:" No issues are listed, and I can select nothing, even after installing proprietary ATI drivers. I created a new account and everything works perfectly in it.

My system system suffers from frequent kernel panics, which I think are due to gnome-shell with the nVidia driver. (I see no panic message and nothing is logged, but I've enabled magic SysRq and it makes no difference.) Twice this has occurred during yum-update's install stage, which is making me wonder. Uum-update then complained about an unfinished transaction, so I ran yum-complete-transaction as suggested. I've also tried yum-clean-all and rebuilding the RPM database, suggested in other threads, but I'm still seeing the following errors on yum-update:

I don't know where these 32-bit packages have come from this is an x86-64 system and the only x86-32 stuff I've intended to install is the Adobe flash plug-in. Also the later dupes are different 64-bit versions. I've tried "package-cleanup --cleandupes" as suggested in this thread: [URL]. It wants to remove the old versions, but also wants to remove packages that depend on them, including clutter, so I cancelled that. The first time round I was left with a barely usable system and had to reinstall, which I'd rather avoid, especially if this is going to be a regular occurrence. I'm not familiar with RPM (or kernel panics for that matter).
