There is a script that I want to run as root when the machine boots up(which starts the Redhat Certificate System services). The problem I have is if I put this on rc.local it wont run because I havent logged in as root. Is there a way that I can run this without logging in as root at the machine startup?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed a new Linux distro (just to test it) on my usb memory stick, and I'm trying to run it. I don't know if what I did is correct so far, anyways here's what I have:
Grub on sda (internal hard disk)
sdb with no boot loader (memory stick)
In grub I've been doing:
root (hd1,0)
kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon root=/dev/sdb1 vga=normal
initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.37-sabayon
boot
This seems to work (as opposed to when I forgot the root= parameter, which almost destroyed my linux on sda1 ), but during startup the system complains about no root bein found on /dev/sdb1. I also tried (hd1,0), but it didn't change much.
I'm sure I can boot an OS from usb on my computer, so doesn anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
I have GParted installed, running openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. When running GParted, it always grayed out most file system actions, supporting only hfs fully. This made no sense, as I had all the required packages installed for other file system support. However, I recently figured out how to get it to work. Using the installed menu button doesn't work, running "gnomesu /usr/sbin/gparted" doesn't work; to get it to work, I have to open up a terminal, type "su -" to log in as root, and then run gparted. The menu button and gnomesu both prompt for a password, so it should be running as root, but launching it through the root terminal is the only way to actually get it to work. Is one root different from another?

Code:synergyc <localipaddress> at the end of the /etc/rc.local file but I still can't use my keyboard and mouse to log in. I've also tried adding the lineCode:su <username> -c "synergyc <localipaddress>" to /etc/rc.local but it still doesn't work. Just to clarify, I do have synergy+ working on Fedora but I need to start it after logging in on each reboot by switching my keyboard over to the other computer.

1. Emerald is not running at startup so I have to type emerald --replace every time I login otherwise I get no windows border.
2. The static application switcher in compiz is not running at startup so I have to go to ccsm and disable then reenable it again otherwise when I point my mouse to the edges of my screen it wont do anything.

I don't care to waste anymore time just now, or spend anymore energy just now trying to resolve *those* problems. The script works fine when I execute it logged in as root (su). I've changed the permissions to 4777 so that *me* running the script that is executed *as root* should work:
ls -l apache_up.sh -rwsrwxrwx. 1 matt matt 1114 Jul 22 16:42 apache_up.sh But it still gives the above errors. I thought changing the sticky bit would work. How do I run this script myself and have it execute the "/usr/local/apache2/bin/apachectl start" command - so that I don't have to su each time?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a weird question about the sudoers file. Currently, I am running "Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 8)".
I edited the sudoers file (via visudo) and added the following:
User_Alias RPTS2 = vtmtest
RPTS2 xxxxx = (jboss) /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
The user (vtmtest) issues the following command
sudo /oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh
and gets this message:
user vtmtest is not allowed to execute '/oracle/app/oracle/apps/rptsd/deploy-jboss/deploy_rpts_jboss.sh' as root on xxxxx
When I look at the log, I see the following:

I am setting up a system for students to use to run lab-based exams. On bootup, the system needs to download an encrypted file containing the exam files, and then ask for a decryption password.
I want to do this during system startup (before anyone logs in). But I am having trouble getting keyboard input at this point.
I've put a script in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99examsetup along the following lines:

but it doesn't respond to keyboard input. I have tried appending "< /dev/console" but this also doesn't work; in fact if I insert 'tty' before the first 'echo', it tells me that /dev/console is the tty being used for input anyway.
Is there a way round this? I can use plymouth ask-for-password, but that doesn't seem very portable, and it interacts badly with the graphics driver on one of my machines.
I am currently in place where I get high speed internet connection. I am using F15 64 bit version. I've installed a lot of softwares and updated theOS completely. My question is is there any way that I can create a startup disk of my system so that I can install it in other system of same configuration.

Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out).Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. But somehow I have to login as root and run the vbox as root. otherwise if I run the vbox as a normal user, I cannot mount the magicjack usb device, it appears as a grey disabled box. The nmb service *is* enabled at all of the relevant run levels and does start if I issue the command "service nmb start" as root after I log in. This particular box's networking is 802.11n via a usb port and is under the control of the network manager. I have another fedora 12 box with an internal intel 5100 802.11n card and it does not have this problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter yesterday system update the x server won't start up anymore. It locks immediately with blank screen leaving the computer unresponsible until hard reboot. I hat to once again go with the "vesa" driver, as I mentoined earlier in another thread it is a life saver, always works. My video card is integrated Radeon HD3250 - video driver was fglrx from ATI itself. "radeon" driver now reports that modesetting is not supported and will not load with EE-type X server error.
Anyone else experienced this? Are there any changes in the most recent X server that once again break compatibility with the official ATI driver?
I login as normal user. I can 'su root' fine - password authenticates. However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. When I run updater, it reports failure to authenticate, but doesn't even ask for root password beforehand. Is there a cached password someplace?
