View 7 RepliesToday I downloaded an update (can't remember which ones they were exactly) and afterwards I was told I needed to restart my computer. But once this happened I couldn't even get to the GRUB menu. before the grub menu was supposed to appear I got this error message
"error: no such device: /ubuntu/disks/root.disk" and
"error: no such device: /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/grub.cfg"
afterwards I get to some command line version of grub where I can type in commands like "reboot" but i don't have my old menu where I just selected the kernel I wanted. I have a dual boot with Wubi if that makes any difference. Does anybody have a way I can recover my copy of Ubuntu, or will I need to reinstall?
I get the following message in my F11 system when I try to yum update system.
ERROR with rpm_check_debug vs depsolve:

I'm not able to login after system update tonight. whenever I try to login, the screen goes black briefly and it automatically logs off.
I tried both kernel, 2.6.35.6-64.fc14.x86-64 and 2.6.35.6-45.fc14.x86-64, but failed.
I am running Fedora 12 on an Intel Core 2 Duo system.
I ran a software update which installed a new kernel (2.6.32.23-170.fc12.i686.PAE) along with many other things.
I am now unable to run VirtualBox which I had installed and running successfully before the update.
I tried removing and reinstalling VirtualBox from YUMEX, and rebooting. This did not help.
When I launch VirtualBox from a terminal, it produces the following output:
VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: VBoxVMM.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I'm not sure what it is complaining about. The files VirtualBox.so and VBoxVMM.so both exist in the /usr/lib/virtualbox directory.
What can be done to get VirtualBox working again on this system?
I Am Having Problem With My JFS Partition On Which Ubuntu Is Installed. It Is Not Mounting. The Bootscreen Says There Is Serious Problem With Mounting The Partition And It Does Not Load Linux. I Tried jfs_fsck -p and -a But With No Success. I Also Tried Checking For Errors Using GParted.
The Logscreen Said logredo failed and unrecoverable error reading M from /dev/sda5/ CANNOT CONTINUE. Is There Any Way I Can Repair This Or Atleast Get My Data Back?
I'm new to Linux world. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04. I'm unable to go online using Ubuntu because I'm unable to run an executable client application provided by my ISP. I called them and they are not able to help me instlling this client applicatoin for me on my Ubuntu. "I cannot go online untill I install this ISP client application on my Ubuntu." I'm entering my ISPs weblink in this blogpost so that it would be easy for you guys to help me resolving this issue. http://www.spacenetindia.net/download.php This is the weblink where I downloaded that ISP client application from. I clicked on this link and clicked on 24online clients.exe tab located on the left and downloaded linuxclient.gz. Please help me if you find any resolution for this issue. Though I tried downloading Wine but I could not as I cannot go onlnie in Ubuntu. In windows I don't know how to install wine to make it work offline in ubuntu.b

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter updating to kernel-2.6.33.6-147.fc13.x86_64 (and updating all kmods) VirtualBox guests no longer boot.
I had a Windows guest (from now on refereed as Crapdows) that worked normally. After the update, I could get to the "Start Windows Normally" screen, but then Crapdows refused to boot. At first, I thought it was a crappy M$ bug, but after creating another VM (Doublecrap), and starting from scratch, I was able to get to the "Windows is loading files" screen, and then the guest hangs again.
This problem is generalized to all OS'es I've tried. In Ubuntu, I can get to the language selection screen before the installation freezes. The same applies for Fedora and SUSE guests.
Is it time to get my hammer?
Using hd3200 on a lenovo edge 13.
followed this guide to install catalyst 10.12 and everything went fine and drivers got loaded.
Just updated the kernel to the latest version(2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64) and after the reboot, the screen is just blank.
Who has successfully upgraded going from F7 x86_64 to F9 x86_64 using the yum approach? I have had about 0% success getting everything to work correctly doing a fresh install of F9. Everything works correctly in F7( sound, firefox/flash, networking, samba, etc ), so I figure that starting with something know to work and upgrading to F9 might be a better approach that starting with F9 and having it guess.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed netatalk for Linux in Fedora 10. I managed to get the service starting correctly at every boot and from Linux side everything looks good. I even manged to tweak avahi-daemon to advertise my server on the network so would show in Finder sidebar (with a snazy tux icon). But when I try to connect to the server it asks me for username and password (as it should), but my password doesn't work. I changed my password, I even gave it a simple one to rule out possibility of "fat-finger"-ing. No success.

Having a problem with my system hanging after updating Fedora 12. Here are my system specs:
Gigabyte MA770-UD3 motherboard
AMD Phenom 9950 Quad Core
6 gig Corsair DDR 800
1 x 160 gig SATA (OS)
1 x 500 gig SATA (data)
I have my system configured for dual boot with Windows 7. After installing F12, I can reboot with no problem. However, after I install the kmod-nvidia drivers, my system hangs on reboot. If I press any key on the keyboard, it will start to load, the freeze until I press a key again. I have tried both Fedora 12 x64 and i386 with the same results. Here are the steps that I took to install the kmod-nvidia drivers code...
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday did a fresh install of UNR 10.10, all went well with that. After the first log in it found the Wifi and checked for updates. Updated the system and then it went to restart the system due to a Kernel upgrade. Once I did this, that is when the issues started. Firstly when booting up, it just sat at the Ubuntu boot up screen saying:
"The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present"
'Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery'
So firstly I hit S, this presented me with several error boxes (as expected due to setup/config files sitting in my /home folder), I then found that I wasn't able to connect to my wifi (not that it can't see it, just that it won't connect) each time I try and connect it just comes up saying that the wifi is disconnected. Of all the things to fail I was expecting the Bluetooth to and it didn't. Anyway the computer specs are: MSI Wind U100, upgraded to 2 Gig Ram, 320Gig HDD, and wifi card is the Realtek RTL8187SE.
HDD is setup as:
4Gig for Swap (/dev/sdb1)
6Gig for / (/dev/sdb5)
Remainder is /home (/dev/sdb6) (I did make this an encrypted partition)
Can't do any screen shots as I am not able to connect to the internet on that machine (having to use another computer in the house). I have tried to view the fstab file and I am not able to.
Yesterday i have installed F14 and then went to the comand line to update the system via yum update. It was about 860MB of updates in 430 packages. The strange thing is that only one package was a delta rpm and all other were normal rpm. Is Fedora giving up on presto or it needs some special configuration?

I usually find answers in the documentation but this time I'm really stumped. I am Running 64 bit Ubuntu 9.04.
Seems like the latest Kernel (2.6.40-4.fc15.i686) update screwed with my setup a little bit.
This is what happened:
I had about 100 updates to my F15 pending in my taskbar's update notifier.
I let the system update itself.
Reboot and desktop effects don't work.
Takes a long time to open up Dolphin.
electricsheep (OpenGL screen saver) doesn't work.
I'm assuming it's a problem with OpenGL or my nvidia video drivers which I tried reinstalling from mjmwired's guide.
That didn't fix anything.
I'm looking for a point in the right direction or a way to revert back to my previous state before the system updated everything.
I cant get yum to work
every time I go to install something it gives this output code...
I was wondering if and how it would be possible to put together a sort of Home "cluster" system. pecifically, I wanted to make it so I would have a central server and a few computers, where the central server holds the home folders and settings of each user, and each user can log in to any of the computers using a standardized login (into the server), where anyone could log in with their account on any of the few computers - and their home folder (Desktop, Documents, Music, etc) would automatically be there.
Also if possible, would there be some way to centralize the applications that show up on each "client"?
So this is what happen i was updating the system and electricity went out so i cancel the download and close the update manager..when electricity is back i re-select some of the packages for update everything went fine and when installing the updates one error message is generated saying somthing like it is being used my other something and i click cancel and it says restart the system now or later i restart the system and after some time it says--- ubuntu running in low graphics, nvidia kernel fail to load and there is this OK button but nothing work neither the touchpad nor the keyboard i cannot click ok and continue using ubuntu in low graphic mode also.
i tried recovery mode lots od thing happen but it also stuck after this
Begin: running /scripts/init-bottom
Done
and then it get stuck....
one more thing in the update package there are 2 x-server packages...
