Fedora :: Accessing Directories From Terminal?
Aug 29, 2010
o, incredibly simple problem that I am having a terrible time finding an answer to. I am trying to setup a program in Fedora to be redirected to a folder in my 64-bit Window$ partition, however I am not sure how to tell Terminal that it has a "(" and ")" in the path name.
The exact path in standard value is as follows: "/media/12842F85842F6A85/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps" What SHOULD this look like in Terminal?

Loving my new Fedora system and the steady march towards making a MS free house but I have a problem. I need to be able to connect to my company server via VPN and then initiate a terminal server connection. Two clicks on XP but I have no idea what to use now. As soon as I have this down I can remove my XP partition forever as I have everything else I need daily working like a charm.

Is it possible to restrict users with 'sudo' from accessing certain directories? Rather than just exclude cd and ls from the sudo privileges, that is.

I currently have samba setup and connecting. What I am trying to do is have multiple users with access to different directories. For example , let's say there are folders A B C on my Linux machine. I want one guy to see A and C and another guy to see B and C and a third guy to see them all. But I want each user to have access to change delete or execute the files within these directories that they have access to

I am using ubuntu 10.04 and I am having trouble accessing my Internet through terminal, while I am able to access it through browser.
In terminal, if I try to ping any server with its name, like ping google.com, I am able to do that, even I can successfully used nslookup and several other network commands, but when I tried to download something, using "wget" or install something using "gem install" or checking out some code using "svn", I got server timeout error.

Is there a way to access remote mount points that were created within the "Places" dropdown or within Nautilus? I haven't been able to locate a mount point for these.
I know I can create a mount point using fstab that will solve my problem but I was hoping for something using these automount procedures as it's really clean.
I just want a way to access these remote shares via terminal when created within Gnome.

I'm using an external USB Iomega Rev 70GB HDD. (Have been for a few years). It uses UDF format for higher transfer speeds of large files. (This is not an option, & not changeable), therefore natively recognised since 2.6.20, I think. (But no official Linux support).
Occasionally though, I run into problems such as can't format a disk in Linux, need to boot to Wins to do it. Also like today: So I have a bunch of comic pdfs & cbrs on it, mix of .rar files & folders. They were there yesterday. Today I went to read something and I couldn't see them. Thought maybe I'd deleted it by accident, but no. Looked at the drive in terminal and I can see the "missing" files and folders fine, but can't see them in Nautilus to open in Comix.
-Tried setting all permissions on the whole drive to R/W/E through Nautilus.
-Files & Folders aren't hidden.
-Tried rebooting.
-Tried using Administrator Nautilus.
-Thought it might be a re-emergence of the recent Nautilus Preview bug, so swiched File Preview off.

So I gave the following permission using sudo su to some directories:
sudo a+x -R ~/<SOME FOLDER>/*
sudo a+w -R ~/<SOME FOLDER>/*
After doing this, I can access write and read all directories but my terminal shows these folders highlighted and I really dont like this. Is there any way they can look like before (with no highlights)?

The directories
/home/<user_name>/.Trash
and
/root/.Trash
do not exist.
I've tried viewing hidden directories with nautilus and using "cd" in terminal. "locate" is equally useless.

Over SSH when I do a "ls" command, I see some directories with a green background and blue text. What does this mean?I think it's related to a problem I'm having. I have the directories shared over the network. I'm the owner of all the directories but when I tried to move one of the colored directories to a different location (over the share from MacOSX) I got a generic "access denied" error.

I want to make a webserver with multiple users allowed to login through SFTP to a specific folder, www.Multiple users are added, lets say user1 and user2, and all of them belonging to the www-data group. The www directory has an owner www-data and a group www-data.
I have used chmod -R 775 on the www folder, but after I try to create a folder test through my SFTP server (using Filezilla) the group of the directory created has only r and x permissions, and I am not able to log in with the second user user2 and create a directory within www/test due to a lack of w permission to the group.
I also tried using chmod 2775 on www directory, but without luck. Can somebody explain to me, how can I make it so that a newly created directory inherits the root directory group permissions?

I am noticing problems accessing the firewall gui and mounting the second hard drive in my PC running Fedora 13. This is only when I am accessing the machine with VNC. If I am sitting in front of the physical machine, I have no problems at all. I would like VNC to behave more like I am sitting in front of the computer. Is there a way to do this? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

We installed Fedora on top by my WindowsXP, we have updated the connection information with the addresses, but can't access any website. Connection Manager says we're connected. We created a new wired network connection, but it doesn't appear in the choices.
I installed Ubuntu recently and had a similar problem, only mine was that my computer was competing with hers (something to do with DHCP). The solution was to alter my /etc/network/interfaces file, but I also screwed with settings in the "Network Connections" thing, pretty much altering a connection my /etc/network/interfaces file seemed to have made. My problem was only solved as far as I cared. I wonder if this is the same problem.
On the other hand, we attempted connecting the Fedora box directly to a modem and still no internet, so I believe they are entirely unrelated. But I wanted to include this for completeness in case they are.

I have some software installed on a RedHat Linux box, that is attempting an FTP transfer to a remote system.
The transfer is always aborted after 20 seconds.
The same software on another RH box does not do this. Both boxes are accessing the same source FTP server.
What operating system options should I check to see what is causing this timeout?

1)Not able to open any of the checked-out file on my windows client's machine.
2)Also it doesn't let me to commit any newly added file on the repository(Error: root is not allowed to commit files). All the permission were set to 777 and i created a new user exclusively for cvs too.The error is still the same i.e. root is not allowed to commit files Are these two points interrelated or am i making some stupid mistake. Can anyone put some light on it.

I have just formatted an external USB disk with a JFS filesystem. The partition shows up in 'Computer', and it mounts, but if I try and copy and files onto it, it will not do it. Clearly, Nautilus is mounting it read-only. How do I get this to behave like my USB Flash drive, where I plug it in, and its automatically mounted read/write?
