I know it is not advisable to write to a NTFS drive with linux. Though I'm using Knoppix and Fedora 11, is it safe to access my video and music files from linux, while I am working under them or would it be best to use external media to get them.
View 2 RepliesI am noticing problems accessing the firewall gui and mounting the second hard drive in my PC running Fedora 13. This is only when I am accessing the machine with VNC. If I am sitting in front of the physical machine, I have no problems at all. I would like VNC to behave more like I am sitting in front of the computer. Is there a way to do this? View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just managed to install OpenSuSE 11.3.When I try to access a NTFS partition (holding my .MP3s) I get the error message.There is no application installed that can open files of the type block device (inode/blockdevice).Do you want to install one? Attempting to install one doesn't seem to lead anywhere othe than the same sequence. I used to be able to read NTFS partitions with 11.2 - what has changed?

I currently have 3 drives. 1 is running nothing more than Ubuntu, 2 drives are NTFS drives that I have from Windows days...I need them that way case they are big and at some point I may need to go back to windows (don't want to though).About 3 days ago I was un-raring some files on my big portition (500 G...the files were about 24 rar files with total after extract +/- 600 megs)I also had FireFox open and I was checking email....something happen and my computer become unresponsive...no mouse, no keyboard.So I flip the switch (after about 5 minutes waiting).I can start Ubuntu not a problem but as soon as i try to mount my drive that was mounted at the time of "re-boot" nautilus is crashing, my desktop is gone.I can see the file on that drive in terminal, I can view/modify some of the files...I can see and work with the files using GNOME Commander.I try testdisk, fsck, ntfsfix and I also try XP chkdsk (that one took long to run).
Now does any one know how to fix this? If i can fix this I can move some of the file to other drives and maybe format that drive to ext3.This drive also has my VMPlayer XP files so I do need that (not able to connect to Sonic Wall VPN with x64 linux so need to use XP).
Can format a drive to ntfs in fedora 10? Do i use fdisk then use format like in dos?

I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP. After booting to OpenSuse, I can see NTFS drives are mounted but I am always being asked for a password to access them. Is it possible to access NTFS drives without typing a password? The reason is I created links referring to folders and files stored on the NTFS drives.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter trying Truecrypt, LUKS, and Ecryptfs I decided to try NTFS encryption. Now, on a dual boot computer from Ubuntu I can browse the encrypted folders but can not open the encrypted files. All attempts produce access denials yet the Unix file permissions appear to be "0777" (owner, group, and world readable-writable).
Is there someway to get Ubuntu's NTFS software to recognize and decrypt the encrypted files? Would a different NTFS package work such as NTFS-3g?
I am kind of new to linux. How can I make Fedora automatically mount my NTFS partition on boot?

I'm trying to copy all my data(approx 50 GB) from a usb drive(western digital 250GB) with ntfs partition in one go... The problem is that it only fails for big transfers... works fine for smaller transfers like 1Gigs or less... I have just one internal hdd partitioned into two ext3 partitions.. so I have sda1(Primary.. mount pt /), sda2(swap) and sda3(mount pt /piyush)... The usb drive comes up as sdb(sdb1).. just has one ntfs partition... I've also installed the ntf-3g drivers.... but doesn't seem to work... I've also noticed that when the machine hangs and I try to shut down, it fails and I get a message again again... (sdb1- no sense detected) or something like this... don't remember the exact message... will post the exact one if no one is able to figure out what's wrong...
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.
(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:

(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu Meerkat on a new build that has two HD's. The installation process saw and setup the first drive but seemed to ignore the second. Using the disk utility under Administration, I formatted and then partitioned the second drive. I then added a line to the fstab.
The disk usage utility under Applications-Accessories sees the increased space, however I don't know how to access it.Under previous versions of Ubuntu, in this situation all of the hard drives would be visible under Computer and Nautilus but they're not.Any suggestions as to how I can access that second drive?

View 2 Replies View Relatedi somehow managed to corrupt ubuntu 10.10 installed on my laptop and subsequently, i loaded a fresh version of ubuntu 10.10 on another partition. i want to access the data in the home folder of the other (previous) partition, but sudo nautilus gives me root privileges only in the current "filesystem" and not on the home folder of the other partition.
although i've been using ubuntu for some time now, but i am largely ignorant about most of the terminal commands.

Can Windows read/write to ext2/3/4, or do I need to format the drive as NTFS?
I have a secondary drive on my new RedHat Linux computer and I want to make it permanently accessible from the RedHat system that is now running on the computer.
It is an old Windows NTFS drive that was a secondary drive when this was a Windows machine.
What do I need to do to, and how do I do it:
1) Format it into a format that Linux uses.
2) After it is formatted correctly, permanently mount it so it will always be accessible
3) After it is successfully formatted and mounted, how do I access it? (For example, to add a new ascii text file to it via 'cp')
I don't know why, but all of a sudden when I plug in a Corsair flash drive with a fat32 files system, it registers on the notifier, but when I try to open it in Dolphin, Dolphin opens in the /home/documents folder. Ditto when I try it as root. Media won't open to anything, and when I click on the Corsair listing in the folders on the left side of Dolphin, I get the error message: unknown file system 'vfat'. I have used this drive for over a year with no previous problems, and can access it in 11.3 on my laptop, so I suspect that a setting or something in my system has changed.

I have an NTFS partition on my disk and whenever i want to browse files on that partition I'm required to enter my password. my problem is that my music folder is located on that partition, and as a result, whenever I open rhythmbox, it cant access the files on that partition and begins to remove them from the library. in order to prevent this i must browse to that partition manually and enter my password upon request, prior to opening rhythmbox.
on a side note - shouldn't the spell checker on the Ubuntu forums recognize "Ubuntu" as a legit word ?
I have an MSI Wind with Windows, Ubuntu Netbook Remix and another Ubuntu derivative installed on my 80gb drive. I recently acquired a 160gb drive, which I plan to put into the Wind. I cloned the 80gb drive, which left me with an identical configuration, plus 80gb of unallocated free space. The problem is that I already have 4 primary partitions; the last of them (adjacent to the free space) is divided up into 4 extended partitions. I tried to make the free space available in gparted, but it won't let me create a new partition because I already have 4 primaries. Is there some way I can get this into the last primary partition? I tried expanding the size of the extended partitions in the 4th primary partition, but gparted won't let me do this.

machine1 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine2
machine2 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine1
machine3 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine1
machine3 will read/write files that are on the hard drive of machine2
etc etc...
all of this reading/writing will be done through the terminal, and programatically. rather than SSHing into a machine to read/write files from it, I'd be happy to set up some 'conventions' on how to access hard drives of various machines. for example:
'hdd1' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.1).
'hdd2' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.2).
'hdd3' will refer to the hard drive of machine1 (that has the static IP of 192.168.0.3).
etc etc...
this way, when I want to read/write a file, its PATH will be something like ~/hdd1/myfile.txt; ~/hdd2/anotherfile.txt;
