Using a SUSE server, what's the best method/tool available to mount existing shared directories? I have defined shares on a Window 2008 server and am attempting to configure the SUSE server.
View 8 RepliesI wonder how to get Samba share access working well...Dolphin supports Samba but it doesn't really mount anything, it seems... Non-KDE Applications therefor can't access samba that way. In Gnome there was a workaround for the same problem. You could simply go to ~/.gvfs in any application and find the samba mounted there.Is there anything like that in KDE? I set up a Samba mount via /etc/fstab for now but that is quite annoying because it fails after each Suspend, changing WLAN Access Points, etc. Then I have to go to the console and manually launch sudo mount -a to get it working again. How can I make things more comfortable?
P.S.: I'm even up for using something else than Samba to talk to my fileserver. However I don't know of anything that would work better in this regard. (NFS would have the exactly same problem for example)
I have a Thecus NAS with nfs support running. Now I switched from OpenSUSE 10 to 11.2 on the client side and aren't able to mount my nfs shares. With SuSe 10.0 I didn't have any problems.
The /etc/exports:
/raid/home_nas1 192.168.0.24/31(rw,no_root_squash,sync,anonuid=99,anongid=99,no_subtree_check)
/raid/soundandmore 192.168.0.24/31(rw,no_root_squash,sync,anonuid=99,anongid=99,no_subtree_check)
On the client side I'm able to see the shares:
showmount -e nas1

We are using spare parts (Socket 775 Biostar motherboard, OCZ 500wat PSU) to build a computer that will just be another system in the house. I want this system to be running Folding@Home, and the F@H SMP client for Linux is much less of a headache than its Windows couterpart, so I would like this computer to run Fedora. My dad loves networking, and knows how to do it in XP / Vista, so he has always opposed my frequent use of Linux. There are ways of accessing Windows shared folders from Linux, but that I haven't figured it out yet. I want to access Windows shared folders from my Fedora 10. I don't know how to go about doing this, can anyone point me in the right direction? Do I have to install anything special? I can go to Places, and then Network (in Gnome) and I see "Windows Network", but when I click it, I get "Unable to mount location Failed to retrieve share list from server"
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have some NFS shares on a server (say Desktop) to which the client (Notebook) is not always connected to. Even the server is not always up. To mount an NFS share in the past, I had some Device-Link icons on my KDE3 desktop. That worked fine. Now, SUSE 11.2 comes with KDE4. The NFS shares are properly configured in /etc/fstab as usual (including 'users' option). And now the big question: What is the official way to mount my NFS share on demand as an ordinary
user?
Desktop icons are not KDE4ish. And the Device-Link method doesn't work either, because it apparently doesn't take care of /etc/fstab (i.e. the users option) and insists on root privileges. Also Dolphin is not able to mount NFS shares when I need it because it
simply does not show them. The only way to mount my shares is to perform the mount command in a
terminal session. But this couldn't be the truth with KDE4, isn't it?
I am using the mount command to mount Windows shared folders are another machine on my LAN, to have them show up in the Linux filesystem. The command mounts the folders just fine, however the access is read-only.
In the command, I am also using the -o option to specify a username and password that should have full access. Also, I have used this identical command on my other distros and it seems to work fine. I've Googled high and low, trying to find a way to specify a Samba user/password for authentication. I know one of the other distros had a program that I could specify a Samba user/password to simulate a Windows login.
I am using Xubuntu 10.04 and can't find where I can create shares as well as access network shares. In Ubuntu I just go under Places/Network and there are my shares. How do you do this in Xubuntu?

However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

The folder I wish to share is configured in Windows with public permissions. I go to the Files & Folders > Documents and then I click on Network in the Places tab. A Windows Network icon appears, but when I double click it I receive the error message, "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server."
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've, for years, been using a little script, as user, to mount network shares, like this:
mount.cifs //server/Data ~/Data -o username=robertw
Previously it used to be smbmount, but that changed. Anyway, the latest updates have stopped me be able to run this as a user. I tried running it as root and that just won't let me get access to the shares, tells me permission denied. I thought I'd try using fstab. This gives varying degrees of success.
Here are two of the entries:
//server/CAD /mnt/CAD cifs credentials=/etc/samba/auth.server.robertw 0 0
//server/Data /mnt/Data cifs credentials=/etc/samba/auth.server.robertw 0 0
The auth.server.robertw clearly shows my correct username and password.
Now, I can't get into the /mnt/Data directory at all, just says permission denied and I can only read from, but not write to, the /mnt/CAD directory. My /mnt directory is like this.

I have too many problems to join my OpenSuSE 11.2 with Samba 3.5.4 in a Windows 2008 Active directory Forest (MYDOMAIN.LOCAL). I have updated Samba to 3.5.4 after read that default 11.2 version have too many bugs. Now, when I try to join the Domain MYDOMAIN.LOCAL via yast i have only an undebuggable error "unknown error". For yast, my Suse is joined but i'm unable to authenticate, i can't see "MYDOMAIN.LOCAL" at KDM login and if i try to lookup forest i have this error:

have you a samba version tested against Active Directory 2008? can you link me the repository or help me to solve this?
Here is my config so far :
1. I installed Windows server 2008, with Active Directory, DNS, DHCP.
2. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and joined it to the domain. Everything is ok. I can see the Ubuntu in the active directory, it gets an Ip address from the DHCP.
3. I create a shared folder on the server 2008.
4. I can access the server from Ubuntu ONLY by going to "Connect to Server" and entering the data to connect.
My problem :I would like to have the shared folder showing up when Ubuntu boots up or when the user is logging IN on the Ubuntu host. I have tried many things without success. I know how to do it so this is fine. BUT i would like a user to be able to access the shared folder without having to do anything (especially for users who are not familiar with computers). What is the best way to do it ?
guide me to connect the SLED 11 SP1 to KEVIN.org (This is the name of my domain I created) Wich i created on windows server 2008.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFrom Konqueror/Dolphin is possible to access samba shares. If your computer is joined to a Active Directory domain and you use a domain user, you can access samba shares with smb://server.domain/share and you are not ask for user/pass (you use a kerberos tiquet). Kde programs as Amarok, K3b, ... can access files in samba shares without problem. But other programs, specially gnome programs (including the popular OpenOffice), are unable to use files in a samba share. If instead of using Konqueror/dolphin you use Nautilus, there is no problem because it maps the share to a local folder ($HOME/.gvfs/share in sever/) and the program are able to access files in samba shares without problems as the folder is mounted locally (as if you use cifs.mount). Its a problem to use konqueror/dolphin and have to change to nautilus to access samba shares.
If you use Windows you can mount it in an easy way. That's what I try to do from konqueror, not having to open a konsole and be able to mount the share in an easy way. I've tried with smb4k, but is has not worked for me (tried in 2 OpenSuse 11.3 and 1 opensuse 11.2). What Nautilus does when accessing a samba shares like smb://server.domain.dom/share is to execute the command: [URL]... What I try is to do the same, but just form Konqueror/Dolphin. I'd like to add a button to Konqueror/dolphin that pressing the button and if the URL points to a samba share, the share is mounted in $HOME/LocalNetwork/server/share. As I say, it can be as easy as executing the gvfs-mount, but don't know how.
I hope this is the right forum in which to post this but I am currently running SUSE 11.2(I know im a couple versions back, its a long story but this box has been in storage for awhile) but the problem I am having is with updating SUSE and accessing the repositories through the Yast Software Installer. When I open it I get several variations of this message:

File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium '[URL].. I think this must have something to do with an old repository not being up but im not exactly sure how to fix this.

There are 5 other client computers that mount the same shares at boot time using almost (different user/pass info) identical data. I do not see what is different about this host.
hi i've searched the forums and haven't found anyting, so i'm posting. Linux SuSe 10. not sure of exact version. The remote desktop will not connect to windows server 2008. I'm assuming that i need to update rdesktop. So i go the Novell Add-on manager and point it to my ftp server with the extracted rdesktop files in the driectory. I can see the linux desktop accessing the folder with the files but a get an error. How do i install the new rdesktop using ftp and the Novell Add-on manager? it seams that the add-n manager is lookikng for a file listing the add-ons.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?
i have 3 ubuntu machines running 9.10. All of them are running SMB so that the Windows machines can access the shares on the Ubuntu machines, but the ubuntu machines can not access shares on the Windows machines. When I click to connect to a windows machine ( all of them running XP), it says "connecting to COMPUTERNAME.." It never opens the computer, and it always comes back with an error saying that it failed to connect. I haven't been using ubuntu for very long, so im not as savvy with it as I am on windows. All windows machines can see all ubuntu shares, just not the other way around and I'd like it to be both.

I have two non-system drives with archive files. Each drive is formatted with one primary partition only, occupying all the drive space. In each drive there will be a number of directories with files in them, like this:

I am having a problem accessing my samba shares from my notebook that has a fresh install of Fedora 15. I know that the server with the samba shares is working since I can access them from the windose box. I have just moved from using Ubuntu to Fedora and have definitely found my home. How would I tell if samba is running (or any service for that matter) on my notebook? I Installed samba-client

Recently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. One of them is a Netatalk daemon that I configured in a fashion similar to this website:[URL]inder recognizes my server and the afp service, yet when I attempt to log in (using valid credentials), Finder indicates its the wrong username and password. I have a NAS running Samba. My Samba shares are accessed from a Windows computer, it works very well.
With the kubuntu 10.04 computer, things are different : I can see the Samba shares in Dolphin, and copy files to the local drive, but lots of applications don't allow me to open a file on a Samba share.
Some applications such as OpenOffice let me browse to the share but refuse to open the remote file
Some other applications don't let me browse to shares at all.
What's up with that ? Surely I'm not the only one wanting to access files on a NAS ? How do other people do it ?
PS I chose kubuntu 10.04 because the 10.10 install hangs, the "ui" workaround I saw here and there did not work, the only solution offered was to go back to 10.04
I'm trying to do the normal setup of sharing some dir's on my linux machine using samba, to allow a windows laptop to access them.
I've managed to get the printer shared and this is allowing to send print jobs, which come out beautifully! however the actual file shares still aren't accessible
Depending on my settings, if I have security = user then when I access from the windows machine I get a username and password box - I dont want this functionality, I want the system to access right away as it would between two windows shares.
If i change security = share then it simply lists the shares, but tells me they are all inaccessible.
I've googled and searched here, tried various different things but I just can't see why/where its asking me for the username/password combo.

i m on the way to migrate from win 2008 server to centos 5.5. i just bought a new hd and have centos installed on it. my old hd runs win 2008 with SFS file system. now i put the old hd as the second hd under centos so i can copy data from it to new hd (centos). i hv install fuse, fuse-ntfs-3g, dkms on centos but still can't read old hd (sfs). the data is quite big so i really need to read old hd with sfs from centos. how do i do that pls? centos can see old hd as sdb when i run "fdisk -l"

The exact path in standard value is as follows: "/media/12842F85842F6A85/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps" What SHOULD this look like in Terminal?
