View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Debian testing and after a recent software update, suddenly I can no longer boot into my single Linux kernel image anymore. I did look at the software update before I did it and I don't believe that it removed any software packages. When I try to boot into my linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 image, I get the following message from grub:"error: unknown command `initrd'"..The same error appears if I try to boot into single-user mode. I have a Windows XP partition on the same hard disk and I am still able to boot into that from grub. I've searched the net and haven't really found my same problem replicated anywhere. I would imagine that the problem is just that somehow the initrd package got removed in my last software update, but again I don't recall seeing any software that the update planned to remove.
Any thoughts on how I would go about fixing this problem? Since I'm unable to get into Linux at all, I imagine I'll have to use a LiveCD to get in and fix the problem, but I don't know where to begin looking.

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!

The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
This is embarrassing. I can't get a wireless address from my router with dhclient. The distribution is sid/lxde/liquorix kernel with no network manager on /dev/sdb1.

Ubuntu 9.10 will not boot! System froze this morning, I restarted and it is now failing to boot. Starts loading grub and I get this message:

I booted with 9.04 LiveCD discovered the drive could not be mounted-ran fsck -ln and it told me the drive has no valid partition table. I have had intermittent problems mounting flash drives before this, so I'm kind of worried it might be a hardware issue.Also have files on that drive I would rather not lose, so reinstalling is hopefully a last resort.
I haven't been active in Debian for two years back when Lenny was still in 'testing' and noticed that for some reason it is no longer protocol to restart network services using the 'init.d' scripts. I also noticed the same for Ubuntu (which I don't use or could care about) and am trying to understand what is the correct way now for Debian and what changed? I did a search on Google but didn't turn up any results. Is it no longer correct to run:

I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.
I am using Wind River Linux- 2.6.27.18-WR3.0bg_standard. The problem is whenever I execute "reboot, ls, cd" and many other commands the OS prompts me an error-

I also executed "dmesg", it also showed similar errors. Has the disk gone bad or the kernel is corrupted?

i was trying to format one drive, accidentally formated another, told the format process to stop, and i'm unable to read the folders or files in the drive. i see some greek, odd symbols... But cant open the folders.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook with a 150GB hard drive in it. A while ago I dropped my netbook and it wouldn't boot. Had a "failed command: READ FPDMA QUEUED" error at startup. So naturally I went and reinstalled. Reinstalling worked fine and I had my computer back. What I didn't account for was the fact that anytime it lost power and didn't shut down properly, I'd get the same error. I can't seem to recover my data either. Can't get any live disks to mount the hard drive after this error but for some reason I can still reinstall Crunchbang (essentially debian). Now I know there are bad sectors or something because when I try to use the disk that came with the netbook with an image of Windows XP that writes to the entire hard drive it throws an error but linux will avoid this I suppose when installing.
Now all of this is to say, being a laptop, several times I have left it on overnight when I fall asleep working or have to run into to town and it'll die and then I lose all my data, rather irritating. What's causing this error? What can I do to prevent it besides getting a new hard drive? If I can't prevent it from happening in the future is there a way to recover the data off the hard drive? I'm trying to install Kubuntu on an old Windows system. I am getting tons of errors such as:

It then reports that it's loading ACPI modules and starting the ACPI services, starting the system log daemon, doing Wacom setup, starting kernel log daemon.....and then it reads sb_bread failed reading block umptysquat.I have a feeling that this hard drive is toast. I can't get it to install Windoze or Linux. I can't even get a prompt so I can do a low-level format. Unfortunately, I'm not super savvy with Linux and don't know what to do next.

I am unable to update apt-get and I am unable to install any software. The following message when I use the sudo apt-get update command:

When I for example try to install the gcc I also get weird feedback:
gcc is already the newest version.

I thought it was that they where already installed on the comp, however, the computer keeps telling me that gcc is not installed. I am not quite sure what to do. I am using the latest version of ubuntu (10.10).
