Oct 8, 2010I am unable to open .rar file on debian lenny. unrar-free has been installed but it does not open the .rar file. Is there another software i need to install?

Debian :: Unable To Install Java On Lenny 5.0?
Jan 23, 2011I guess I am still a beginner since I can't do this. I was able to install Java in another computer successfully. I have both running now. The successful one, had a folder for firefox the one with the problem does not have that folder, (firefox). The instuctions I trying to follow are here: [URL]
Not having a firefox folder I installed using /usr/lib/mozilla/plugin . But the plugin has an X attached to the respective icon in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins.
[URL] This website seems to offer the solution to my problem, I will need help in undoing my previous steps or in removing the incorrect plugin. But will I still need a firefox folder or directory as I have on the other machine? I have a K7S5A PRO MB and Athlon Xp 1800 + processor.
Debian :: Unable To Mount Ext4 Partition In Lenny?
Jun 27, 2010I am running the latest debian lenny OS and with kernel 2.6.26-2-686. I have a common /data partition for both Ubuntu and Debian which is ext4 file system. I am not able to mount this volume. The error message reads "unknown filesystem type ext4". How do I fix this. I searched the net and there was a link talking about this

General :: Debian Lenny Unable To Log In Over SSH Or Straight To The Server
Mar 10, 2010I have installed Debian lenny with software RAID0 (i think it makes no sence to my problem but maybe...) I have installed apache2+php+MySQL (everything worked) I have installed proftpd (to enable users to put files over FTP) after this i tried to connect over SSH to my server i have got:

I thought it is problem with SSH i have tried to connect with another machine over putty, but no success... then i have removed ~/.ssh dir and tried to connect again... i got the same error. Then i connected keybord and monitor to my Linux box, tried to connect there... no success... neither root or my regular user shark. but i should mention my FTP users who have shell: /bin/ftp (symlink to /bin/false) log into the system and then automatically disconnect...
i have tried to boot my linux box to debian safe mode... it asked for a root pass. after i provided correct root pass it didn't fit. I remember once i have made my linux boot to init 1 without asking to provide a pass (it was mandriva Free 2005 or 2006.0) how to do it with a debian machine using grub or any other fixing possibilities?
P.S. i can not how provide server side /var/log/syslog or any other info because i cannot log into my Linux "server"

Mar 29, 2010Have my proxy running on Lenny and tried to upgrade to squeeze. Originally the system was installed on Etch and upgrading to Lenny was no problem. In the system i have two RAID1 volumes, md0 for / and md1 for /home. For upgrading i added the sources to my apt.conf and startet dist-upgrade. During the installation procedure, when installing udev I was advised to install the new kernel first and continue upgrade after booting the kernel. so I installed the kernel by "apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686. When generating initramfs there was a message, that there are no arrays defined in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I took a look and there were none. mdadm seems to have been update before.
I then added the lines for RAID definition and added the data for UUID The UUID I got from the output of "mdadm --detail /dev/md0"
What I don't understand: blkid gives the same UUIDs for the first partitions of the RAID and a different UUID for /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 than mdadm --detail The update of initramfs for kernel 2.6.32 then gives this result:

May 17, 2010I have attempted to install kernel 2.6.34 and 2.6.33 kernels with this Debian howto [url] Everything worked without any errors until I went to boot into the new kernel. When I receive this kernel panic output Kernel panic - not syncing VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
It also spits out something about being unable to access ext2 FS. I googled this symptom and have seen that it is fairly common, but everyone's error seems somewhat unrelated. I used the same kernel configuration as the one that is currently working, to keep things simple.

Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

Of course I partitioned them and such (by the way the OS is XP Home) I decided that i would like to try Ubuntu so set up a live CD of version 8.10. now I used the install directions on the disk and installed onto a external 500 gig HDD.Now I can't boot to XP and I get GRUB errors. Some times iit's error 17 sometimes it's 21 . I try using the command terminal ...sudo ms-sys /dev sda1 (my boot-able NTFS disk) but I get "Unable to open -m/dev/sda1, No such file or directory"

Feb 27, 2010I created a key pair in kgpg on suse 11.1 kgpg version 1.2.2. i am able to encrypted and decrypted files on the pc with no issues. I then exported the public key for the key pair created above, placed on flash drive and moved to my laptop running suse 11.2.
i open kgpg version 2.2.2 and imported the key, all was good. I then passed the file encrypted on 11.1 to the 11.2 laptop and with kgpg tried to decrypt the file, but the decrypting failed. The details shows the public key i just imported and then it says gpg:decryption failed: No Secret key.
I am not clear why on it is failing and if i missed a step some where along the way.
