Debian Hardware :: Unable To Open The CD Drawer Whether There's A Disc In It Or Not?
Oct 1, 2010
Sometimes, I am unable to open the CD drawer whether there's a disc in it or not. I have a Dell laptop which gives me approx 4 methods to open the drawer:
1. Press the eject button on the drawer,
2. Type 'eject' from a command line,
3. Press 'fn + f10' on the keyboard,

I just installed FC12 (2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64) alongside Windows7 on a brand new box, and the DVD drive is driving me nuts. In FC, I can't get the DVD drawer to stay open. When I press the eject button, r slides out, but then slides right back in again immediately. When I start the SystemTools->DiskUtility (Palimpsest), the Eject function is grayed out.The drive itself seems to work just fine, I used it for the FC install from LiveCD. In Windows, the drawer works properly. The only device info I can see for the drive is DH16AAL, I don't know if that's a model no. and I don't know the manuf. Says SCSI, but it's got a SATA cable. The rest of the box is:

I have an issue that I think appeared in Ubuntu 9.10, and is no better in the Ubuntu 10.04 that I dist-upgraded to before I left work yesterday.
I'm sure there's something I'm doing incorrectly, but here's my scenario:
I have a pair of shell scripts that launch SSH sessions with different forwarded ports, and use them multiple times each day. I'd like to drag the shell script directly onto the top Ubuntu Bar where shortcuts go and be able to use it. Or, even better, put all of my frequently used shell scripts in a "drawer". I know that I used to be able to make a shortcut, and set its path to "gnome-terminal -e file://xx.sh" and the script would run in a new terminal window.
When I try to do this, a terminal opens with an error dialog that reads "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal". Permissions?

this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.

I'm totally unable to play or mount audio CDs and unable to use video DVD's on my box right now. When I insert an audio CD I get a dialog box saying:
Unable to mount disc: Location is not mountable
and if I check messages in the Log File Viewer I see the following text repeated (save for the last line) a couple of dozen times.
Code:
May 24 13:04:37 Amber kernel: [ 6680.434685] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE

May 24 13:04:37 Amber kernel: [ 6680.434695] sr 0:0:0:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
[code]...
on a similar but ultimately unrelated thread someone was asked to enter a few commands so I tried them and the following was the output:
Code:
main@Amber:~$ ls /dev/scd*
/dev/scd0
main@Amber:~$ sudo mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0
[code]...
An error occurred: Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file. As far as I can tell I have the relevant CSS libraries installed I'm lost without being able to play CD's and DVD's on my system.

I'm trying to install The Sims 2 (which I'm aware currently does not run properly in wine anyway), using the multi-CD version. The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. The installer prompts me to insert disc 2, but it seems that Ubuntu still believes that the installer doesn't want me to open the drive, because, when I try to open it, it doesn't open, and a window pops up with the following message: Unable to eject CD-RW/DVD RW Drive DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending

Ubuntu wont recognize my disc drive. I installed Ubuntu with Wubi, so I have dual boot. I have the latest Ubuntu. On Windows 7, my disc drive works fine. On Ubuntu, however, the tray wont open. I also tried going to terminal and typed "eject" and "sudo eject" and I receive this message:eject: unable to find or open device for: `cdrom'I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it, but when Ubuntu OS starts up, it takes a while and says "ata3 soft reset failed" or something like that. I had to set the delay to last longer so it could start up

I haven't used Fedora or anything except Windows in my entire life. I decided I would wipe my windows machine and try out Fedora 14.
I did a fresh install, rebooted the computer, and inserted a disc containing the following software: Medialink Wireless-N USB 2.0 adapter Model MWN-USB150N. It a wireless USB adapter so that I can connect to the Internet.
I can't get a single file on the disc to open. The disc is fine because it opens on Windows just fine. When I try to load it here I either get: Unexpected Error: Error reading from file. or An error occurred while loading the archive or There is no application installed to run executable files. I can't do any updates I guess until I get connected to the Internet.

Running Maverick on my desktop. Had a strange happening sometime last night. I generally leave the computer on all the time. When I got up this morning, I saw that my computer had rebooted and it said that it wanted to check for disc errors and that there was a problem with /home It checked until about 70%, at which point it stopped advancing for a half hour, so I did a hard reboot and choose "I"gnore when I got the message again.
The computer booted fine. The disc manager gui seemed to think my hard drive is fine, but I didn't do the full, slow check. My hard drive is about a month old. When I opened "open office" there as a document to recover, indicating that the thing did in fact crash sometime last night. The next odd thing- my "Opera" web browser doesn't open the browser. The command it is calling up is "/usr/bin/opera %U" Doesn't do anything, nothing shows up as running in the status monitor. Rebooting doesn't change anything with opera, and I still get the request to do a disc scan and to try to fix errors.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of opera. I uninstalled that and installed an earlier version of opera. Then, I reinstalled the latest version of opera. In terminal, typing "opera" gives me the message: Could not initialize Opera. Typing "sudo opera" opens Opera. Using the icon to open opera still points to the same place, and still doesn't work. So, here are my questions:
1- How do I get a logfile of the crash that happened last night?
2- How do I figure out if there is a problem with the /home folder or a problem otherwise with my hard disc? How do I fix that?
3- Where would I point the "opera" icon so it opens normally?
4- Is there any way to recover the information that I previously had in Opera, such as passwords? I used "my opera" to recover my latest bookmarks, but that doesn't save passwords. I'm thinking maybe those files are still around, even though I uninstalled and reinstalled opera.

I'm trying to get my Intel HM55 GMA HD graphics card to work in Debian Lenny. As the vanilla Xorg didn't have any support for it, I manually compiled the last stable Xorg source (1.7.1 - such a pain) and the Intel driver. But when I try to launch X, I get the following message :
(EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory)
(EE) intel(0) : /dev/agpgart is either not available, or no memory is available for allocation. Please enable agpgart.

I'm experimenting with old linux Distributions again, and while trying tostart an x server, I get the following error message:X: unable to open display ''That makes me think that the config file is incomplete, but I would have no idea how to make it. If there is an auto configuration utility that I do not know about for X, it would be great to hear about. Here are some other specifications that might help:*Host: VMWare Workstation on Windows XP Home*Distribution: Debian 2.2 (potato) (Yes, I know it's old.)*Connection: Local. I've heard of people having difficulties like this on remote connections, but I am on the physical computer

Then a reboot. Same issue. Next ran metacity --replace I get: Windows manager error: Unable to open X display

Trying to burn files to a disc with the option of no multisession I am getting the error message at the end of the burn "unable to fixate disc"The first time I tried burning it said it did not have permission so I used the K3B wizard to change permissions. Now it simply says "unable to fixate disc"

I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

I am putting together a DIY Point Of Sale (POS) system using openbravo pos as the software and openSUSE 11.4 GNOME as the operating system. I am running into difficulty with the cash drawer. It's a UPOS 2020 USB cash drawer and is fully recognised by openSUSE.
My problem is that after I put in the config into openbravo POS is doesn't work. Out of curiousity I decided to run the program as root, redo the config and it now works fine. how I can have my normal user use the device. It's on /dev/ttyUSB0 btw.

I am looking for a way to programmatically (Python or shell) set up my panels, drawers, app launchers and stuff. Just wondering if there is a way to do that - or a standard approach to it and such.
Am using Gnome - the regular install - no extra components or such. Would it be easier to do it if I was using Gnome 3. Just putting the question out there in case someone is using Gnome 3 and it would be easier to do the automated setup in Gnome 3.

This is a strange problem that I did not have on Slackware 13.0 with VLC-1.0.2, but has shown up with 13.1 and VLC 1.1.1. (All of the VLC packages I'm talking about come from Alien BOB!)
First problem, when I try to play a DVD by going to File -> Open Disk -> DVD -> Play, I get this error:
Code:
Playback failure: DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/hda". Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/hda'. Check the log for details. Which makes sense because of the LibATA switch-over. Right? The DVD shouldn't be /dev/hda anymore.
(There is no log, BTW, I hadn't set one up in the preferences).
I can still choose to open a directory and simply click on the DVD in the open directory dialog box (/media/<DVD name>). Then everything plays without a problem.

else had a problem with wheezy on cd1 install? I get to the install screen and can not go any farther as it will not pick up the keyboard or mouse. I have tried it on several PCs and also verified the disc. Just curious why there was not a 3/21 build? I have squeeze on my main drive and was wanting to install testing on my second drive with LXDE. It fun having stable running great on one drive and then playing around with testing on another. If you mess up so what format start over.

I am trying to install debian on a compaq presario 6000. When I try to boot off of the first dvd it just won't do anyting most of the time; one flat line keeps blinking. The first time that I booted it, there was that line that starts with isolinux, but that was only there the first time. now nothing shows up.That first time, I got several error messages: EDD: error 8000 reading sector 1360652 and the same thing 5 times over with different numbers at the end. Do these mean that the disc is corrupt in some way, or that the dvd reader is broken or something else?
