Debian Configuration :: Unable To Use RAID On Lenny To Squeeze Update
Mar 29, 2010
Have my proxy running on Lenny and tried to upgrade to squeeze. Originally the system was installed on Etch and upgrading to Lenny was no problem. In the system i have two RAID1 volumes, md0 for / and md1 for /home. For upgrading i added the sources to my apt.conf and startet dist-upgrade. During the installation procedure, when installing udev I was advised to install the new kernel first and continue upgrade after booting the kernel. so I installed the kernel by "apt-get install linux-image-2.6-686. When generating initramfs there was a message, that there are no arrays defined in /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf I took a look and there were none. mdadm seems to have been update before.
I then added the lines for RAID definition and added the data for UUID The UUID I got from the output of "mdadm --detail /dev/md0"
What I don't understand: blkid gives the same UUIDs for the first partitions of the RAID and a different UUID for /dev/md0 and /dev/md1 than mdadm --detail The update of initramfs for kernel 2.6.32 then gives this result:
update-initramfs -u -k 2.6.32-3-686
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-3-686
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d102e_ucode.bin for module e100
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/e100/d101s_ucode.bin for module e100

I had this PCMCIA USB 2.0 card that worked in Lenny when I put this laptop into my closet in late 2009. I brought it back out a few weeks ago and put a fresh install of Squeeze on it, and it does not recognize the card. dmesg says something about "ignoring the device" (sorry, I don't have the machine in front of me).
Laptop in question is a Toshiba Tecra 8000. The PCMCIA card... has no brand on it whatsoever. I thought I had the box somewhere, but I have been unable to find it.

What happens if I update Debian Squeeze from Lenny's source.list?A step by step manual is written on Lenny, and if I change lenny to squeeze things seem to not work. When I update the squeeze from the original source.list and then change to the source.list that manual uses things are working. But if I were to start squeeze with lenny's source.list I am getting error while trying to do this:
apt-get install wget mc zip unzip bzip2 ntp ntpdate lsb-release.

I'm in need of a bit of assistance from you Debian users. I have two servers that I thought were identical installations, both running Debian Lenny. Tonight I started the upgrade to Squeeze on both servers and one of them went smooth. The other one started out good but fails on the postconfiguration of openssh-server. I'm getting the following message:
Code:
Setting up openssh-server (1:5.5p1-4) ...
Auto configuration failed
2524:error:0E079065:configuration file routines:DEF_LOAD_BIO:missing equal sign:conf_def.c:366:line 67
invoke-rc.d: initscript ssh, action "restart" failed.
[Code].....
It looks like there's an error in one of the files in openssh-server that prohibits it from installing correctly. However on the other server it all went well.

I've installed Debian Squeeze on my server several days ago. During install process installer asked me to provide USB flash drive with firmware aic94xx-seq.fw. All went fine. Today I installed all updates to my system with "U" in aptitude. Aptitude installed kernel update 2.6.32-5 and created initrd accordingly. But now I can't boot up my system because it can't find LVM volumes on harddrive connected to Adaptec RAID card. How can I boot my system now? I have USB with firmware.
I have netboot CD. Unfortunately when I tried to edit boot records in grub I found that there is no my old kernel anymore. The only kernel grub sees is the new vmlinuz kernel and new initrd How take make my server alive?

I'm trying to install Debian Lenny on my new Dell XPS 8100 Desktop with 2 x 1To SATA HD. (No Windows or any other OS install is present on the system) The Bios allows me to change the SATA mode to either "ATA" or "RAID"
- When SATA mode is set to RAID, the installation goes without issues, but when it comes to load into the system, I've got that Stage 1.5 Grub Loading... Error 2 problem. I assume this is due to the Bios "RAID" configuration. I then switched the SATA mode to "ATA" in the Bios and now I can see the menu that allows me to boot my debian install but that part actually fails too saying "ALERT /dev/sda1 does not exist"
- When SATA mode was set to ATA, I tried to re-install the system but this time my drive was not recognized by the installer: "No common CD ROM drive"

I updated today and naturally removed the old nVidia driver, compiled it again after a reboot, and then rebooted again for good measure. I can log into KDE4, but all I get is a cursor and a solid black background. I deleted the ~/.kde, ~/.local, and quite a few other directories from my normal user account using the shell so KDE would reconfigure my settings when I logged in again, but it's the same problem. I went into ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and added the "Compositing" section with "Enabled=false" to rule out compositing. Now when I log into the system I get the default KDE4 wallpaper and a mouse cursor, but nothing else. I believe the latest update broke KDE4, or am I missing something? I have recreated my xorg.conf as well, and only set it to use the nVidia driver. So what can I do now?

I have just updated my Squeeze system. The update included a newer version of network-manager (and it can not be more than a few hours old). After the update all network functionality on my machine (via knetwork-manager) is broken. The GUI applet has no effect.
Hence can anyone help me: a) Downgrade network-manager by one version; b) Find out what is causing knetworkmanager to break; c) See if the problem is with knetworkmanager or network-manager.

Now that the stable version of Squeeze is available, the newbie that I am is asking himself this almost existential question: should I get Squeeze or stick to Lenny? Some arguments in favors of Lenny that are coming into his mind are that there is more material, tutorials, in brief, more resources to find as to learn and solve problems.
But is this true and if yes, is it a reason? What about security? There is also this widespread saying that tells to always get the last release for performance and security reasons.Being in this position where I obviously don't have a lot of knowledge and experience to judge myself with all the elements, assessing thoroughly all the differents factors, I would have like to listen you opinion(s) on it.

I am currently running Debian Lenny on one of my external HDDs and Debian Squeeze on the other one. I found a package I like in lenny but it seems it has not been added to squeeze (yet). The package is ksirc and i like it because it looks and feels like mIRC that I used in windows. My question is can I install the lenny version on squeeze with out it having an adverse effect? My other question is what do I put into the /etc/apt/sources.list to do this? i now see that ksirc is also available in a sid (unstable) version. Is it safe to install this one to my squeeze distro? and again what do I need to add to my sources.list to do this?
Or could I just download the deb package and install it using dpkg? New to this and just looking for the best way to get a favorite software package.

I run into a problem when trying to update from lenny to squeeze. Seems that util-linux fails to install due to some error and that this causes xorg as well as udev to fail. If this is the case then it might be a bug in the post-installation script for util-linux..Am I on the right track or is it completely wrong?

I have a Debian Lenny LAN Gateway machine running shorewall, squid and a source install of ossec in the opt dir. The machine is an Intel Atom based asus hummingbird with no gui. It works well and has been very stable so far. However, i am considering upgrading to Squeeze. Is it feasible to attempt to upgrade this machine, or am i realistically looking at a reinstall and reconfigure with Debian Squeeze over a long weeked?

I have Ati HD 4890 card and I need to get it working with game and 3d-software. Which Debian should I choose to get those ati proprietary drivers to work as stable and easily? Can I get them working all the time with Squeeze/Unstable or should I use Lenny for that? If they work with all of them, I'd like to take Squeeze (or is unstable as stable? name doesn't say that at least). So which one I should choose? Can a newbie get fglrx to work on Squeeze?

I need libnet0 on a squeeze installation, so I can compile nemesis, which unfortunately has not been an active project. It depends on libnet0, which is not in the squeeze repository.I can compile nemesis, but will it ok to do this the same way with the libnet0 library? Or should I manipulate the /etc/sources.list to be able to install it from the lenny repositories? (this doesn't sound right...Better get the sources? And what happens when I compile it? Can I safely have libnet0 and libnet1 on the same installation?

While I've been using Debian for various years, I have never actually used Stable. No Stable means no Backports, and I have a doubt about the latter. After reading Backports's documentation and the APT Preferences's manual page, I understand that, as of Squeeze, a backport must be installed manually, and that already installed backports are automatically updated. Also, because Backports archives have a pin-priority of 1, one cannot update all installed packages to the versions available in Backports.
I guess that one could achieve it by giving the Backports archive a pin-priority of 991. However, using the whole Backports repository is discouraged everywhere, and I don't really know why. How serious are these warnings? Does it cause a dependency Hell or is it just a warning for novice users?

when I tried to upgrade my computer from Lenny to Squeeze and it downloaded everything but it's stuck at installing udev which it said it couldn't do on the 2.6.26 kernel. I then did update-grub and Squeeze's 2.6.32 kernel was seen (on grub). I have grub-legacy chainloading (if I'm not mistaken) but I don't have grub2 installed. When I try to boot through the 2.6.32 kernel so that I can complete the upgrade (that is to install udev and have everything working fine), instead of reaching the OS, it says something along the lines of "kernel panick not syncing vfs" and something about "root(hd1,0)".

I have been asked to install Windows 7 on a computer that groans to even run Windows xp properly. As I know, this is like asking for the impossible, I am posting here to have some opinions about the use of Wine in Debian. In particular, I would like to know whether wine makes Debian less secure and more vulnerable to viral, malware, adware, etc infections.
