Debian :: Notebook Can't Find Home Network?
Apr 19, 2011
Hardware: Notebook
OS: Debian 6.0.1, installed very recently
goal: access vista windows shares in my home network
What would keep changing the domain to "lan" in network settings on my Debian notebook? I've tried launching network-admin from a root terminal, made changes, but after rebooting it reverts back to "lan". Perhaps it's irrelevant, but maybe it's the reason I can't see any other PCs when I try to browse the network.
Installed samba, but that seems more for setting up a share, than trying to access existing shares. At any rate, it did not solve anything.
Weird though, because immediately after I installed Debian, I was able to browse the network successfully. I've only installed zsnes and debian updates since then. I also installed the Broadcom firmware/driver needed for wireless today, but my network browsing problem existed prior to that.

I am unable to access wireless network from my notebook. My configuration is Dell i5, 4GB RAM and 1397 W-LAN and I have F13. I can still access Internet through Ethernet using a LAN cable but the network monitor doesn't show list of Wireless networks which my room mate's windows 7 machine easily detects.
If anyone needs more info please provide me the steps to perform to find that out

I've just bought an all-new hp pavilon dv4-2114br and I realized that I can't install slack on it... (cfdisk doesn't run)
ok, so all I need is to copy some folders from my slack desktop to my windows netbook.
How can I do it? Both desktop and notebook have wifi antenas, so I want to connect them and do the job.
I tried creating a wifi network with wicd + samba + vsftpd, but until now I got no lucky.

So I have a notebook with a web cam and ubuntu on it, I would like to use the webcam to stream videos that I take in class to my desktop at home (dual booting ubuntu and 7). The idea is that I can take video notes in class and when I get home I can look them over because they've been saved to my desktop. What would the best course of action be in this instance?

I'm trying to use Debian Stable with some newer upstream packages. I've got the upstream Firefox tarball unbacked in /home/firefox/. The problem is that it can't find any plugins, flash or anything else. It's the 64 bit binary but still needed some 32 bit libraries to run. Does it need 32 bit plugins?
Iceweasel is uninstalled and and I deleted it's ./mozilla/ directory. I tried creating a /home/.mozilla/plugins/ directory and symlinking plugins into that and pretty much any other conceivable path where it could be looking for them.
I run upstream firefox from /home/ in the past and had no problems.

I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.

At home I have two computers running linux connected to the same router. I would like to be able to connect them so that I can move files between them and execute simple commands. What is the most simple way to access a prompt on the other computer or to mount a partition currently used by the other computer?Using the www it is possible to connect two computers using ssh, but it should be easier to do this over the LAN, right? I have been googling a lot but not found anything.

I got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.
Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install
I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy
I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.
What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?

My notebook seems to just freeze once in a while sometimes once a week, sometimes once in two weeks, sometimes once in two consecutive days. I cannot for the love of it narrow it down to anything. Granted, I have not followed the logs, but doing so for the first time gave no real results either.

I try to install Debian 8 on my desktop PC that has a wireless network card.I had already used this computer with debian 7 and I could use my problem-free network connection.
My network card is : Asus PCE-N10
During the installation, a message occured to ask me to load a firmware (rtlwifi/rtl8192cfw.bin) which is loaded from a USB key. After this, Debian-installer seems to find my wireless card but can not find wireless network.I have this message, translated from French: "The search for an available wireless network failed" and I can enter an ESSID but inconclusive.

I have made a Debian minimal installer on a USB drive according to this manual: [URL] I have installed a minimal version of Debian, meaning text-only, with only the kernel, shell, filesystem, and a few programs. Now I need to install the rest of it over the internet. So here are my questions:
1. Where can I find the additional files to install?
2. Where can I find a manual that tells you how to install them? This manual doesn't say anything about that.
3. Are you supposed to install the files during the installation process, or do you get them online through the minimal Debian (using wget, etc.)?

I just installed debian, durning the installation i opted not to connect to the internet since the large network cable was in the closet and i did not feel like standing up. Now i have finished installing and plugged the network cable in, expecting it to "just work", this is not the case. What needs to happen before the wired network connection starts working? also, the lspci output, appearantly it won't find any network adapter. I suspect this is the fault of my lazyness.

I'm installing Squeeze on on a Dell Latitude D830 laptop with a Broadcom BCM4328 wireless network card, and I'm stuck on getting wireless internet to work. I have the 2.6.32-trunk-686-bigmem kernel. I run KDE and I have knetworkmanager installed to sort the network connections out. Unfortunately, knetworkmanager cannot find any wireless networks for eth2 (the wireless adapter). There is a wireless network, as other equipment can still connect to it.
I've installed the broadcom-sta drivers according to http://wiki.debian.org/wl. When I run iwconfig, I receive the following output: eth2 IEEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"" Mode:Managed Frequency: 2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate: 14 Mb/s Tx-Power:off Retry min limit: 7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power ManagementMode: All packages received Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise Level=0 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 missed beacon:0

I am trying to install Debian Lenny via Hyper-V. I get to the point where it asks for the network card. For some reason it can not find my network card. I have a RealTek (RTL8112L PCIe Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2 built on motherboard).
For some reason it doesn't see it. My issue is if I continue without the network how am I getting the drivers? Unfortunately Hyper-V doesn't support USB. I guess I can try to burn to CD but not looking to waste a cd for 480k and not sure that will work as I only see a auto.sh and a couple other files under scr directory. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. This is a fairly new Motherboard/NIC so I do not understand why it isn't recognized. I know it cant have everything but Realtek is a fairly common nic.

After sleep or after being shutdown, network manager cannot find my network's SSID. I have to wait ~5 minutes for it list my SSID. I dual boot this laptop with Windows 7, and on Windows, I connect to the internet instantly after boot. The machine I'm running is a Sony Vaio VPCCW290X notebookIntel Core i5 processorNvidia GeForce 310M video cardI am planning on making Debian my main OS but I am experimenting with installing it on a usb drive first. I am new to linux so this has been a learning experience so far. I finally got the grub installed correctly for the external hard drive to boot up into Debian. I installed the minimal network install so I should just be going to a console prompt. After booting it it goes for a short time and then the screen shuts off, not just black. I tried ctrl-alt-f1/f2 which didn't do anything. I am able to reboot by ctrl-alt-del though. If I try to boot into the second option it goes further before shutting off. Using a live cd it does the same thing unless I choose the fail-safe option. When I choose that it boots up correctly. If I hook up an external monitor it will switch over to it when the screen shuts off, so I know it's not the video card

The top row of keys on my notebook are currently assigned to various media functions (brightness, volume, play, stop, etc.) These keys are rarely used, and it would be better if they were assigned to the function keys (f1,f2,f3,...) by default, rather then using the fn key to access them. Locking the fn key down is not an option. What can I do?

I have a RT8187B wireless card in my notebook. When I turn ON my wifi and connect in a TP-Link router, after -+ 30 min, the notebook power off. It's not like shutdown. It's like the power (battery and power adapter) was removed: everything stops working immediately and erases (like a blackout when we don't have a battery). When I'm using my ethernet all things works pretty good.
