Ubuntu :: Notebook Webcam Stream To File On Desktop At Home
Feb 17, 2011
So I have a notebook with a web cam and ubuntu on it, I would like to use the webcam to stream videos that I take in class to my desktop at home (dual booting ubuntu and 7). The idea is that I can take video notes in class and when I get home I can look them over because they've been saved to my desktop. What would the best course of action be in this instance?
I wonder if anyone here has succeeded in streaming the video of a local webcam to the internet? Some research has turned up webcam_server Project Home Page but unfortunately it only supports v4l, not v4l2 and is no longer maintained. It seems to be possible with VLC server, but I'm a bit reluctant, because their repo is said to break other things. I still have 11.1 here.
Enter file in which to save the key (/home/vivek/.ssh/id_dsa): Press [Enter] key Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): myPassword Enter same passphrase again: myPassword
I'm looking for Webcam Streaming software that can stream over HTTP.I've done a bit of looking on google and can't find a good solution.Ideally it would be streaming video with sound.
I have a high bandwidth linux server and a lower bandwidth windows computer. I want to have the windows computer send my webcam stream to the linux server, then have the linux server redistribute the stream with it's higher available speed to any users connected to it (via http, or whatever will work).
How could I (using c++ language on linux machine) put media stream (like mpeg4 movie) into the udp packets and send it to other computer in the network?
Hardware: Notebook OS: Debian 6.0.1, installed very recently goal: access vista windows shares in my home network
What would keep changing the domain to "lan" in network settings on my Debian notebook? I've tried launching network-admin from a root terminal, made changes, but after rebooting it reverts back to "lan". Perhaps it's irrelevant, but maybe it's the reason I can't see any other PCs when I try to browse the network.
Installed samba, but that seems more for setting up a share, than trying to access existing shares. At any rate, it did not solve anything.
Weird though, because immediately after I installed Debian, I was able to browse the network successfully. I've only installed zsnes and debian updates since then. I also installed the Broadcom firmware/driver needed for wireless today, but my network browsing problem existed prior to that.
I am having problems with ffmpeg. My goal is to capture a video stream from my webcam and feed that into a webcam-capturing program. But to get that to work, I will need ffmpeg to work. I need the following command to work, but I get an error:
Code: $ ffmpeg -b 100K -an -f video4linux2 -s 320x240 -r 10 -i $device -b 100K -f image2pipe -vcodec mjpeg - | perl -pi -e 's/\xFF\xD8/KIRSLESEP\xFF\xD8/ig' ffmpeg: relocation error: /usr/lib/libavfilter.so.2: symbol avformat_find_stream_info, version LIBAVFORMAT_53 not defined in file libavformat.so.53 with link time reference
I have the notebook 10.04 version installed in a notebook. All is working well... so far. BUT I am afraid that I don't appreciate the notebook version desktop. Is is possible to convert it to the "standard" Ubuntu gnome desktop?
How's the quality of the sound that gets to your loudspeakers? What components do you have - brand, specs, mode and distance of computer to amplifier?[URL].. Mid and bass sound good.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and I have got a VNC, FTP, SSH, Apache server running on it. I would love to setup a media server on it so that when I'm away from home I can stream my movies rather than download them via ftp (made even worse by my slow upload speed).
I installed fuppes however I think that only streams to xboxes, playstations, etc :/
Is there a piece of software that I could put on top of apache? So that when I'm out and about I can just open my website and from there open my password-protected media server and stream any movie file I chose?
I turned my home PC running Ubuntu 10.04 into a server, and so i am so lost, after reading like a 10-20 different guides and/or official docs, I am totally lost.
All I wanted was to create a custom 404 error page...i read about how people edited .htaccess files to customize error pages, i tried and failed also, editing apache2.conf, I got lost and i dont wanna mess up everything and also, how you're supposed to not touch either of those as its not how it should be done and instead you need to edit httpd.conf and i did and FAILED! again...
Also how do I make it so that I can make subdomain(s) on my site? and wth is a name server and where do I get one?
I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.
I try install debian squeeze or sid to my notebook acer aspire timeline X 5820tI try mini iso and netinstall but isntallation not detect eth0 (Atheros AR8151 PCI-E gigabit ethernet) wlan0(Atheros 5B93 wirelles network adapter) is detected but not working.I try DVD http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekl ... -DVD-1.isourning is OK, but on boot edd: not reed sector and long numberError not configured file found or ......md5of burn dvd is ok, i burn it 2x, K3B, Brasero, burning is complete, check of burning files too but, not boot (I try boot on my desktop PC and its OK, but on notebook dvd not boot.
With the new pricing plans and streaming service I am strongly considering upgrading my U1 account.
1. Is there a way (or will there be) to stream from U1 to an Ubuntu desktop? For instance, I have an Ubuntu desktop/media server that I utilize as a media hub for my home. It has more storage than I'll ever use. The main PC I use however is a HP netbook with a much smaller hard drive. I'd like to sync all of my music from the media server to U1 so that I can access my entire collection via my Android phone. I'd like to be able to do the same with the netbook but if I sync it to U1 it quickly fills the hard drive. Is there a solution for this?
2. I doesn't appear that the U1 Mobile comes with additional space, is that true? (seems a little steep for just streaming while limiting you to 2gb)
I have a debian home server right now, I'm using samba for my file server but I was wanting to stream my movies and music to my other computers. My family (the other users on the network) are NOT computer savvy, and to top it off they are using both Windows (xp) and Mac (Snow Leopard) machines. So I'm looking for software that is simple to use that will allow other operating systems to use it. I would think the easiest way would be to stream the music/movies through a home website. I have seen quite a few programs out there that stream music, but none for movies.
I have both windows (xp and win7) and mac (osx snow leopard) running on my network. I'd like to find a unified system that I could use as a file server. Mainly, I'd like to have it hold music and movies, maybe run some automated backups from a win 7 desktop. I'd also like it to be a print server. I'd like to run the most simple and lightest weight OS for the server os. However, I don't think I have the basic linux knowledge to run Ubuntu Server as it is terminal based. I have installed it on my machine but I feel like im running in circles. I have it installed and can SSH in with my laptop no problem. I feel like I may be better off installing Ubuntu Desktop and removing what I dont need. at htis time the server has only a 40gig hdd in it, i also have a 500gb hdd i'd be using for the files.
I am wondering if there is a good application that would allow me to setup a webcam at home, so that if I am at work, I could launch an application my android phone (or via a web browser) that would allow me to view & HEAR what is going on. It would also be neat if the application running on the home computer could be smart... ie: start recording if there was a loud noise & send an email alert ... or similar I havent purchased any hardware... but was thinking a (USB) for the main and an additional wireless (w/infrared) for being able to move around.
My Specs: Asus UL80jt, i3 core processor, 4 gb ddr3 ram, Dual Boot Windows 7 and Fedora 14. I use Last.fm on my Xbox all the time and I use this application to stream music online all the time in windows. I would love to run this in Fedora 14, however I keep running into an issue when I go to run the make command.
I have tried looking online for awhile and cant get anywhere, I spoke to a few of my friends who run F14 and they say I am missing g++, I can't find how to install that, can't find it with yum, GUI software manager, nothing.
While I was trying to drag the Desktop icon to the places sidepane in nautilus file browser so that I can have it above Documents icon, I accidentally dropped it in Documents icon. I immediately deleted the "Desktop" shortcut that was created in "/home/user/Documents" but it was too late already and the damage has been done. When I try to create a new document on my desktop, it says "Error while coying to Desktop There was an error getting information about the destination. Show more details Error stating file '/home/user/Documents/' Desktop':No such file or directory" Now, I know that my desktop now is pointing me to a location in Documents folder which doesn't exist at all. I tried looking for any available settings/options in gconf-editor, but only in vain.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on both my laptop and desktop. I've gotten a Gigaware Webcam with Mic (Radio Shack) 25-157 camera to work out of the box on my Del E-1505, no problems. Even interfaces with Skype correctly.
On my desktop, though, the camera light comes on, the camera is recognized through lsusb:
Code: Bus 005 Device 003: ID 093a:2620 Pixart Imaging, Inc. and /dev/video0 exists, but I can't access it through VLC or Skype.
I would like to know how to demux the audio from a flash video file (copied from /tmp while browsing a video site). I would prefer to avoid re encoding if possible.
When my netbook has an extended screen, using an external monitor, all of the panels stay on the netbook, not the big monitor. When I connect an external monitor, I want to use it as my primary screen. I only really intend to use the netbook screen for skype calls (so I am looking into the webcam, and not away from it) since it is so small. I wish the secondary screen to be the netbook, not the external monitor. How can I do this?
In Firefox, when I try to download a PDF document from a particular website, I get the message, "Unable to open document. File type unknown (application/octet-stream is not supported.)" Yet the same PDF document loads fine in Konquerer. Am I missing a plug-in or something?
I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) and Firefox 3.6.11, which has an entry for PDF document under Edit > Preferences on the Applications tab that says, "Use MozPlugger 1.13.3...".
I'm working on some scheduled task script files to keep nightly backups of some of our database information in place, and it's a bit annoying when they blow up. I know how to redirect stdout and stderr to a flat file I can view when I come in, and I know that 2>&1 maps them both to the same file (whatever was named in 1). However, I'm running into some cron-time situations where it's easier to have the two streams together, and other cron-time situations where it's easier to have them separated. I can't really tell which is going to happen; is there some way I could create both kinds of output file for my scripts, so that I've got a std_err only file and an interleaved std_out/std_err file?
Note: I've looked at the 'tee' command, but I don't think it will work for what I'm after. 'tee' appears to only work with stdout; I'm trying to work with stderr.
