I have a RT8187B wireless card in my notebook. When I turn ON my wifi and connect in a TP-Link router, after -+ 30 min, the notebook power off. It's not like shutdown. It's like the power (battery and power adapter) was removed: everything stops working immediately and erases (like a blackout when we don't have a battery). When I'm using my ethernet all things works pretty good.

My name is Dieter, from Belgium, new here. I installed suse 11.2 from the dvd. I bought a wificard that is supported under linux for this pc. Still my firefox does not connect to the internet. I set up the card in yast to dhcp. I find networks and can connect to them but that's where the story ends. I know about ubuntu. Not debian.I have installed debian 8 64bit on a notebook mainboard vga display only.During installation vga display worked. After restarting the lock up crypt hdd shows. After that debian login screen should show. It does not. Only the pointer shows.If I put the hdd in another note book, the debian login screen shows on the notebook's display. I then connect the vga display.
Then I can select settings, displays and mirror debian gui and gui will show on both displays. After restarting the notebook both displays show the debian gui. If I then put the hdd into the notebook mainboard, then the vga display will not show the debian login screen. The pointer shows. On ubuntu settings, displays, general option, I can set all displays. That option is not in debian 8. How do I get debian 8 to show the debian 8 login screen on the notebook mainboard vga display only computer?
I'm using debian testing on my Asus UX305. When my laptop is connected to power, the power notification still shows "discharging". And The battery part of the laptop feels unusually hot.

I trying to connect my linux machine( kernal 2.6)with a D-Link WBR-1310 router (Firmware fully updated). Internet was working on the computer when it was connected to other network. DLink is DHCP Server enabled. The XP boxes had no problem connecting to the internet automatically. My linux box was having trouble (absolutely no network detection.) on D link and port of linux lights are green. for the Wired Connection I set the configuration to Automatic Configuration (DHCP). I was unable to ping my router at 192.168.0.1 (Destination Host Unreachable).I'm not sure what to do, but I suspect it may be the DHCP client settings.

The firmware has been installed and at first was even able to connect, but now the access point doesn't even show up in network manager. View 1 Replies View RelatedI had Xubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer and everything worked fine, i could download and surf the net pretty fast, but all of a sudden i couldn't do this anymore. The adapter was still connected to the network but when i opened firefox it worked for 5 seconds and then it would not load any pages, and even synaptic couldn't download any packages, even though it was still connected to the network. So i tried to reinstall network manager but it didn't work, then something happened and i couldn't access my Xubuntu anymore so I decided to delete the partition and install Xubuntu 10.04. I still have the same problem. What should i do? I am sure it is not a problem with the adapter because it works on the Windows partition.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running.
If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).
acpi_listen detects the button press.
Any thoughts?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy grandson is now running on Ubuntu, but I tried an upteem dozen times to get it to install and have Wireless working, and two times the light went from orange to blue, but some later problem caused me to do the install over, and when I did that, I would lose the wireless mode. And every attempt I made with the Network settings under System/Preferences or System/Administration did not help.
Now I wrote here about my long effort getting wireless going in my own L355-S7915 Toshiba notebook, and how I finally beat it without actually knowing what I did that finally got through, but that won't work on this HP G60-630US model. Fact is, HP doesn't neven name the motherboard or the chipset, or the Wireless Adapter involved. I keep searching for more specific language, but nothing turns up.
If anybody has found a way to beat this thing, I sure would like to know about it. One thing I remember doing was using wicd in place of Network Manager at one point, and it really did work better on my machine, but I can't find wicd as something I can install now with the newer versions of Ubuntu. So far I have tried 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 LTS, and 10.10, and my sone is presently making his first shot at Ubuntu using 9.04 64-bit version. Still no wireless. If it shows up in a screen menu, and it doesn't always, it will be grayed out and might show that it is disconnected, and I don't know how to connect it.
Any help would be much appreciated. Again, this is an HP G60-630US laptop I am dealing with here, and stuff I went thru way back then has gotten lost in the midst of my 69 year old collection of memories. I went back through what I wrote then, but it is not a match to what I am dealing with now.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a D-Link DIR-655 router capable of 802.11n operation, upgrading from a DIR-624 router only capable of 802.11g operation. While my overall setup uses wired connections, other people in the house prefer wireless, and the upgrade was undertaken more for a hoped for increase in wireless range, rather than the possibility of increased speed, since the router is located to accommodate the wired connections. However, to test the 802.11n operation I bought a D-Link DWA-130 USB dongle for my now 5-year old laptop, which comes with an otherwise satisfactory 100Mbs ethernet port(eth1) and an 802.11g wireless card(eth0). By checking the dmesg | grep firmware output after I plugged in the dongle I determined that the necessary firmware was rtl8192sfw.bin, which I found on the web, and downloaded into the directory /lib/RTL8192SU.
A subsequent reboot and then YaST > Network Devices > Network Settings showed the device as wlan0, but not configured. I changed the Network Setup Method to ifup (since I can see no way to do a device configuration in Network Manager), and configured the device, and at the same time deleted the configuration for the existing 802.11g wireless card(eth0). I then rebooted, went back into YaST to confirm the wlan0 device was configured and the 802.11g device (eth0) was not, changed the Network Setup Method back to Network Manager, rebooted again. Making sure that the router was set to only transmit/receive using 802.11n I then typed iwlist scan. To my surprise, the output showed first that the supposedly unconfigured eth0 device seemed to be still active, for it found my home network, and claimed that the protocol used was 802.11g. On the other hand, the newly configured wlan0 device produced the message: "Interface doesn't support scanning: Network is down".
First, should I expect iwlist scan to work for a device that shows as unconfigured? And even if it should work, shouldn't it show 802.11n as the protocol, assuming that the router is in fact telling the truth? Is there any independent means to determine if the router is only using 802.11n as it claims? Second, the overall goal is to make the wireless network in the house 802,11n only, and since the dongle is backward compatible with 802.11g, I would expect to permanently unconfigure the eth0 device and use the dongle, both here and on the road. I have a bluetooth-enabled notebook and I used to eventually turn on/off the wireless switch, which disabled wi-fi and bluetooth capabilities.Recently I turned on the switch to find the bluetooth icon missing from the Notifications area at the panel. When I type bluetooth-properties at the terminal a windows pops up saying "Your computer does not have any Bluetooth adapters plugged in." No further hardware/software changes were made recently.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI got installed debian 6.0.1a en my compaq presario 1255 (amd-k6 with 160 Mb and 4.3 Gig), but I had to use expert install to be able to select lilo instead of grub2. I ended with a very basic system (it only uses 8Mb in console mode, and 28 Mb in fluxbox plus an xterm). It is still a very usable machine.
Previousy, I was able to install lenny 5.0.8 just with normal console mode install
I think that with lenny, the fan of the notebook (I mean the "external" one, I do not know if there is another in the micro) some times was on. but i do not think it works at any moment now with wheezy
I have been googling a couple of hours, but I am not getting a clear idea about fan and notebooks.
What have I to check? is it a module? something related to acpi?
My notebook seems to just freeze once in a while sometimes once a week, sometimes once in two weeks, sometimes once in two consecutive days. I cannot for the love of it narrow it down to anything. Granted, I have not followed the logs, but doing so for the first time gave no real results either.

goal: access vista windows shares in my home network
What would keep changing the domain to "lan" in network settings on my Debian notebook? I've tried launching network-admin from a root terminal, made changes, but after rebooting it reverts back to "lan". Perhaps it's irrelevant, but maybe it's the reason I can't see any other PCs when I try to browse the network.
Installed samba, but that seems more for setting up a share, than trying to access existing shares. At any rate, it did not solve anything.
Weird though, because immediately after I installed Debian, I was able to browse the network successfully. I've only installed zsnes and debian updates since then. I also installed the Broadcom firmware/driver needed for wireless today, but my network browsing problem existed prior to that.
There is no sound on my Debian notebook.I added myself to "audio" group and have "alsa-utils", "pulseaudio", and "firmware-linux" packages installed.
However when I try to play an audio file there is no sound regardless of volume settings.

The machine I'm running is a Sony Vaio VPCCW290X notebookIntel Core i5 processorNvidia GeForce 310M video cardI am planning on making Debian my main OS but I am experimenting with installing it on a usb drive first. I am new to linux so this has been a learning experience so far. I finally got the grub installed correctly for the external hard drive to boot up into Debian. I installed the minimal network install so I should just be going to a console prompt. After booting it it goes for a short time and then the screen shuts off, not just black. I tried ctrl-alt-f1/f2 which didn't do anything. I am able to reboot by ctrl-alt-del though. If I try to boot into the second option it goes further before shutting off. Using a live cd it does the same thing unless I choose the fail-safe option. When I choose that it boots up correctly. If I hook up an external monitor it will switch over to it when the screen shuts off, so I know it's not the video card

Locking the fn key down is not an option. What can I do?
