General :: Where To Find System Drivers For My Notebook
May 19, 2010
Perhaps it is not proper to post on this forum. Sorry for any inconvenience.
I have finally make up my mind to use Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) as the SOLE operating system on my notebook. The last obstacle is that where to find proper drivers for my devices? Such as code...
Could someone give me some advices on where to find these drivers?
I have compaq presario v6307TU notebook, i am going to learn ethical hacking and i have ubuntu 9.10 and backtrack linux OS.
Do i need different drivers for my ubuntu n backtrack linux OS or there will be only one drivers required for 'linux'.
Anyways i am not able to find any drivers for my notebook for LINUX, i have asked HP for that but nothing gud happened they told that they dont have drivers for 3rd party operating systems.
My notebook uses Conextant HD audio and has intel 945 express family 128mb graphics, i ran ubuntu from the disk i have (but had not installed it yet) and tryed palying my .mp3,mpeg,mp4,avi files and nothing worked..obviously because i had not installed the audio-video drivers...causse i didnt had them...where to find them?
Also i wanted to kno that i have installed nfs most wanted on my xp, so will i be able to play it in linux?
I got fedora 12 like 2 weeks ago. I am newb in using linux. I got enough of the problems windows 7 has and thought to change on something good and free . It seems OK but i want to try play some online games on fedora. Seemed it did not have video card drivers installed and tried to install them. Once i installed some kind of video drivers using a yum command i found on web. But i think something was wrong because when i tried the first game installed with wine it worked as if i didn't have video card . Even yahoo messenger works very bad as if i won't have video drivers. I remember at the middle of that installation it shown kind of error like it did not find something.i don't remember exactly what it shown because immediately after that it continued to install video card drivers. But after i tried that game it still seemed something wrong happened. So....how can i see what video drivers i have installed ? Do i need to uninstall them before trying again? I got a CD with drivers when i got my notebook do you think those will work if i install them using wine ?
I just install Ubuntu 10.10 and downloaded the Smartboard install. After I click the program to install it starts thinking then asks for my password. I enter my password it takes it then stops thinking. All other functions work just fine apart from the install. It hasn't started yet. I have a feeling that it would install just fine if I could take of the whole asking for the password nonsense. is there a way to do that.
Hardware: Notebook OS: Debian 6.0.1, installed very recently goal: access vista windows shares in my home network
What would keep changing the domain to "lan" in network settings on my Debian notebook? I've tried launching network-admin from a root terminal, made changes, but after rebooting it reverts back to "lan". Perhaps it's irrelevant, but maybe it's the reason I can't see any other PCs when I try to browse the network.
Installed samba, but that seems more for setting up a share, than trying to access existing shares. At any rate, it did not solve anything.
Weird though, because immediately after I installed Debian, I was able to browse the network successfully. I've only installed zsnes and debian updates since then. I also installed the Broadcom firmware/driver needed for wireless today, but my network browsing problem existed prior to that.
I am unable to access wireless network from my notebook. My configuration is Dell i5, 4GB RAM and 1397 W-LAN and I have F13. I can still access Internet through Ethernet using a LAN cable but the network monitor doesn't show list of Wireless networks which my room mate's windows 7 machine easily detects. If anyone needs more info please provide me the steps to perform to find that out
My friend has built me a computer and i'm running opensuse. I suspect that this question will have been asked many times but it seems important to make ones first post. I have a microsoft lifecam webcam and it will not work. i suspect i will need to install a driver. can anyone point me the right direction as to wher and how to install the driver.
I'm trying to install some drivers so my wireless connection will work and Ive got the genereal gist of how to do it, however Im stuck on a fairly trivial step...I cannot find the Hardware drivers folder! Everywhere tells me to look system>Administration>Hardware Drivers...but its not there.(I'm running 10.10 on a HP mini 1001)
I have finally had a enough of windows and i want to change my laptop to linux, firstly what is the best distro that people recommend, i am trying to decide between ubuntu, fedora, mandriva and ultimate.
Secondly how do i go about installing all the drivers on a acer aspire 5920G laptop, and where can i download these from?
I am not able to use internet using wireless lan. I am Not able to find the hardware and install the drivers .Please help me.I am Using red hat linux 5.4.
I know i know, some will say "eww Proprietary Drivers" but hey, ubunt is all about having more control of the OS. Is there an easy way to install Proprietary Drivers thats not through the hardware drivers option on system?
How can I get a list of what X video drivers are on my system? Preferably not using a package manager (since I'm not sure I trust it to not miss stuff like the nvidia driver). Googling didn't give anything useful .
I have been administering linux systems for years now, but usually they are commodity boxes and as a result I rarely have driver problems, short of needing to install some "restricted" or "proprietary" driver package, or manually installing the nvidia binary drivers back in the day. However, one question to which I have never picked up a straight answer regards common troubleshooting practice. Will lsusb and lspci list device for which a system has no drivers (kernel modules)? I am trying to install a webcam on a SiS-chipset laptop and though I can see a physical webcam, neither lsusb or lspci are showing me that any webcam-like device exists. What I want to know is if it would show anything, or if it needs drivers in order to show a device?
I have a Centos 5 machine, and I've been attempting to install GNOME and the like. However, quite a large number of packages do NOT install because of missing dependencies, all of which seem to trace back to 'system-logos'. Unfortunately, I can find no trace of this package in the 'yum list available' output. Google came up with nothing. If you can help, it would be MUCH appreciated! BTW, I've also tried 'fedora-logos' and 'linux-logos' without success.
I am working on a program lets say programX which must run when the computer is not in use. I want to develop a monitoring program to monitor if there is user activity on the system so that it can stop the programX from running when the user is using the system and start programX when there is no user activity. Is there a way to determine this in linux?

I want to know first how to install drivers, softwares and other learning stuff to get myself familiarize with fedora. i install fedora on windows notebook by reading fedora tutorials.
