Hardware :: Getting A Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB Drive For HTPC?

Apr 5, 2010

I'm looking at getting a Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB drive for my HTPC. However I was initially looking at the WD Cavier Green due to it's power saving features. Upon finding out about the Green's problems interacting with the Linux Kernel I have ditched the idea of getting a WD.

Does the Barracuda suffer from similar problems as the Cavier Green. Are there any problems at all with the drive and the kernel not playing nice together? Do I need to set anything in the kernel config to help enable power saving features of the drive so that when the PC is not in use the drive uses as little power as possible?

Debian Installation :: No Boot Disk Has Been Detected Or Disk Has Failed

Nov 3, 2015

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.

I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.

I will update the topic later..

My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.

Fedora Installation :: 11 Installer Doesn't Detect Seagate Sata Disk

Jul 8, 2009

I have an Asus P5K motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Duo 8400. It has 2 SATA hard disks, a 250 GB Seagate and a 500GB Hitachi.

I've been running Fedora 10 x86_64 for 6 months on this computer without problems.

I'm trying to do a new Fedora 11 install on this computer but the installer (Anaconda?) only detects the Hitachi disk.

I've tried to make a new Fedora 10 install to check if it was a media or disk problem and it detects the two hard disks.

I've tried to install it via a Live CD, and the installer only detects the Hitachi disk. The LiveCD detects the two hard disks, I can access it, partition, format, write, but the installer only detects the Hitachi.

I've tried to change from Enhanced SATA (AHCI) to Compatible in BIOS without success and I've changed SATA cables from one disk to the other, changed the disk order and nothing.

Must I enter some boot parameters for Fedora 11? Has the LiveCD installer some options?

Debian :: Get To Install On External USB 1.5TB Seagate HDD Drive?

Jan 20, 2011

Alright, im completely new to linux. I am somewhat knowledgeable with computers in general. My programming instructor for school told us that it would be in our best interest of the course to grab a linux distro and install it on our computers. (Don't ask me why, i dont know)ANYWAY, i am trying to get debian to install on my external USB 1.5TB Seagate HDD Drive. After learning a lot about Murphy's Law, i had to fix my MBR for windows (the windows installation is located on my internal SATA 1.5TB Seagate Drive) because GRUB wouldnt boot to windows unless i had my external plugged in.

So, the natural solution to me was to fix the MBR, unplug the internal, then re-install on my external, it worked. Well to my surprise, this cloud i was on... wasn't cloud 9. NOW, Debian will boot if i have the external plugged in and windows will boot if i have the internal plugged in. The Problem is, when i have both plugged in and my external set as the boot drive i get this weird error and it will not let me boot linux. Now, i have searched for a fix.. But the ones i have tried so far haven't worked or i wasn't sure how to use those fixes(because im new). The error went as follows:/bin/sh can't access tty; job control mode offthen i get a initramfs command line. (I think thats proper terminology)The temporary fix i have going right now is i have my computer open and the SATA cable unplugged so i can boot to Debian.

Debian Configuration :: Installing Wireless From Disk?

Dec 17, 2010

How can I load packages from the cd? I installed from cd1 which I burned on a desktop, then installed Lenny onto a laptop. Works great, no problems except I have no way of connecting the laptop other than wireless.
I've found the network manager package on the cd, but don't have a clue how to install it. I really need to get the wireless working so I can install package manager, wi-fi radar and some other things. I tried putting the disk back in and thought rescue mode might bring me back to where I could select the individual packages I need, but that didn't work, it just wanted to go through another install. Thought there was a way to select individual packages and add them to the installation.

Ubuntu :: LiveCD Does Not Recognize Barracuda HDD

Jul 23, 2010

My ultimate goal right now is to get Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit (cannot be 32 bit) installed on my internal hard drive (in particular, dual-booting with Win7). When I try to start the LiveCD, it gives me an error that says "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again." Now, I know that that problem is common, but the solutions given online make no difference. And that's not even close to being the extent of my problem. (FYI, this happens after the keyboard icon where I can push a button to bring up a menu.)

After that, it successfully takes me to a LiveCD desktop (where I'm typing this now, actually). But, it doesn't see my hard drive. It shows my external drive, but not my internal. It also seems to think I have a floppy drive. And when I try to install, it doesn't show my internal drive. I tried restarting, obviously, tried reburning the disk. I checked the disk integrity and it's ok. I tried installing without going to the desktop first, made no difference. I tried the previous version so that I could upgrade (with hesitance, I've had bad luck with upgrading recently), and it still couldn't see my hard drive.

Then I tried the alternate cd. While loading, it told me to make sure the disk was in the drive because it wasn't reading it. So, I did a disk check on that and got the message "The ./pool/main/b/branding-ubuntu_0.4-0ubuntu1_all.deb file failed the MD5 checksum verification. Your CD-ROM or this file may have been corrupted." I tried reburning it. Nero didn't even give me an option about what speed, it burned it at 10x. Here's some links to my specs (it's a custom-built machine):

Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3750528AS 750GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Ubuntu / Apple :: No Disk Drives Detected?

Jan 6, 2010

am using the community build of Ubuntu 9.10, I have an old as dirt Power Macintosh G3 Blue And White, and I can't get it to install. I tried the live CD first of course, and now the alternate. Both tell me that no disk drives detected, even though Mac OS 9, X, and Fedora all detect both my 40gb seagate, my 120gb seagate, and my 120gb maxtor.I am trying to get this running with some sort of linux for a school project. What is happening is it asks me what driver to use, and if I select the bottom option that it is none of the above, it asks me to load a driver from a USB flash drive, which I don't know what driver to use. They are all standard IDE devices hooked into the built in bus. I obviously can't move past this point.

Specs:PowerPC G3 450mhz1gb of RAM120gb hard driveDVD-ROM driveZIP 250 drive (currently not hooked up)PCI ATI Rage 128 16mb video card (stock)Apple Fast ethernet 10/100 PCI card (machine has built in ethernet, but I am turning this machine into a hardware firewall, so a second NIC is required).Oh, I have used this machine perfectly with ubuntu before. When I first got it, I started out running Ubuntu 5.10 way back in 2005. I was thinking of downloading and burning 6.06, and upgrading from there.

Fedora Hardware :: New SATA Hard Disk Not Being Detected

Feb 8, 2011

All of my computers are second-hand (except 1 laptop but it doesn't count) and I see in my Dell 4600 there are 2 SATA connectors on the motherboard. I picked up a 250 GB SATA hard disk and cables recently and tried plugging it in but the system doesn't see it. I even disconnected all other disks to make sure there wasn't a conflict (master/slave) issue going on but the system still does not see it.

The disk is vibrating so I assume it is getting juice and is spinning. Is there a setting or something I have to do to tell the system to access the SATA? Do I have to look at RAID settings if there is only 1 SATA disk? Can I not have a SATA disk and an ATA disk plugged in at the same time? I want to try and determine if the disk is bad, or is it PEBKAC!

Ubuntu Installation :: Netinstall / No Disk Drive Detected

May 13, 2011

After many hours trying to install Ubuntu(netinstall-64bit) i can not find any solution to get it working. I set-up via KVM and virtual device. Installation gives me error "No disk drive detected" when trying to detect discs/hardware. Someone told me i have to load megasr-source_13.13.1021.2009-1_all.deb by virtual-usb. It should include drivers for the controller not delivered by ubuntu-setup. After that I got to next setup-step partitioning, but it only shows me an IPMI-device which is either the virtual usb or cd i suppose.

System is one week old and I got it with pre-installed debian64bit which is working fine. So i dont think its hardware causing this.

I removed preload as I had that installed to see if that was the problem, but that made no difference at all.

I already know about the xorg problem but this should not affect me as I am running the property ATI driver.
