Debian Configuration :: Display Size Wrongly Detected After Installing NVIDIA Driver

May 17, 2010

Using squeeze with a GeForce4 MX 440 video card (NVIDIA) I have a monitor (4/3 aspect ratio, 1024x768 usually), and a TV connected via S-video After installing the NVIDIA driver using the NVIDIA binaries I managed to have a cloned twin screen configuration working.

However, the monitor is (wrongly) detected as having size 1824x768 (aspect ratio is widescreen) Using system monitor, I can set the correct size, but only for one session; besides, the login screen too is messed up the xorg.conf file seems right: proper resolution modes are set; xorg.0.log too

OpenSUSE :: Installing The Moodle On 11.3?

Jun 7, 2011

I'm having issues installing Moolde on OpenSuse 11.3. I've downloaded the package but I get missing dependency issues like no mimtex needed and then after I resolve that I get a heap of missing pearl stuff. So do I assume then that the moodle package isn't a complete install even though I found it on the open suse site? Can I get a complete list of what's missing or what I should be installing when I install my open suse 11.3?

Ubuntu :: TestDisk - Incorrect Partition Table Detected

Apr 29, 2010

I'm not sure exactly how, but somehow one of my partitions was corrupted yesterday (GParted showed it as unallocated space). I tried using testdisk. It found the lost partition, so I happily let it rewrite the partition table. The lost partition did return, but then I found out another partition has disappeared (the one most important to me) and in its place there is an empty NTFS partition and an empty ext3 one (the original was an ext4.

The two new partitions seem to be those that were merged to form the ext4 partition). I tried testdisk again. When I run "testdisk /dev/sda" and choose "Analyse" the incorrect partition table is detected. I tried running "testdisk /dev/sda5" (sda5 is the NTFS partition) and it finds a partition labeled "magic" which is the name of the lost partition but testdisk cannot recover it. I get this:

Code:
TestDisk 6.11, Data Recovery Utility, April 2009
Christophe GRENIER <grenier@cgsecurity.org>
[URL]

Disk /dev/sda5 - 47 GB / 44 GiB - CHS 5823 255 63
The harddisk (47 GB / 44 GiB) seems too small! (< 75 GB / 70 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection...

The following partition can't be recovered:
Partition Start End Size in sectors
Linux 0 1 1 9137 234 56 146800640 [magic]

EXT4 Large file Sparse superblock, 75 GB / 70 GiB
I tried deleting the second partition and moving the one after it so that there is 75GB available but it didn't help. I have lost worth of a year of my work. The worst thing that could ever happen to me!

Debian Configuration :: Installing With A Later Kernel ?

Sep 10, 2010

My girlfriend got a 'new' (second hand) laptop, a HP Compaq 6715s. When I tried to install Debian on it, the install went immensely slow - glacial, even. It was a very minimal install but it tooks hours to get to nowhere.

I found out online that this was because of a problem between the current kernel and the hard drive (or HD bus, something hardware-y to do with the disk) which meant file operations were extremely slow. I thought "easy, patiently install Debian and then install newer kernel". Except that after six hours, the install wasn't even halfway.

So I install Arch Linux with the 2.6.35 kernel: no problems with the drive speed at all. After a lot of researching (I only played around with Arch once, more than a year ago) I got the system into a usable state. But now wlan0 has suddenly disappeared, together with some other problems - and a usable laptop wasn't exactly what I had in mind, it was supposed to be awesome (or at least good). Which, with Debian, it would be

So... is it possible to make a Debian installation use a later version of a kernel? I'd want to install Debian with the 2.6.35 kernel, not install Debian and then afterwards update the kernel (because I don't have 24 hours to install an OS, if it'll ever even install).

I've found some stuff online but it might well have been written in the Cyrillic alphabet. All I understand, I think, is that in theory it's possible.

The FTP users do not have access via SSH, only my user ID. Debian Configuration :: User Access To A USB Stick?

Oct 30, 2010

This is a perennial problem with Linux. I am just not comfortable moving a lot of casual files around as root. How can I have user access to a USB stick? I've done my Google searches and tried several methods, some of which work temporarily but not permanently. At the moment, I have this line in my /etc/fstab: /dev/sdd   /media/usb_flash  ntfs  noauto,users,rw,umask=0 0 0
As with other methods, this worked last week but not now.

All I want to do is insert a USB stick, transfer some files and remove the stick. I want to do this as a user. This should be simple. What is the trick?

Debian Configuration :: No Network Access In Gnome

Apr 5, 2011

I've installed Debian on a Sun Ultra 450 Enterprise system using the net install version, so I know that my network is working correctly. However, now that Debian is installed and I bring up Gnome, I have no network access. I've set eth0 to DHCP, and have pointed it to my DNS server, but it never gets any information from the DNS server.

I've looked through /etc/network/interfaces, which looks like this:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface allow-hotplug eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
/etc/resolv.conf contains:
nameserver 192.168.0.1
which is correct.

I've run
/etc/init.d/networking stop
/etc/init.d/networking start

So far, nothing works. Why would the Debian network install disk work, but not be smart enough to set my network correctly from the start once I'm actually running Linux? Also, how do I get the network running in Gnome?

Debian :: Configuration Could Not Be Loaded - Access Not Allowed

Apr 17, 2010

I have recently installed Debian 504 AMD64, when I try to access "System" --> "Administration" --> "Users and groups" logged in as root, I get the following message:
"The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration."
The system does not even ask for a password and the result is the same if I log in as a normal user.

I have installed from a single ISO DVD downloaded from the internet and read the DVDs of my previous Debian distro to install packages not included on DVD 1 of Debian 504 although I do not think this unusual approach can have any effect on the installation. I suspect I'll have to boot in single user mode but I have never done any troubleshooting at the command line.
(/etc/passwd and /etc shadow look OK).

Debian Configuration :: Installing Libpam-systemd

Aug 12, 2015

I upgraded my machine from Wheezy to Jessie, opted to not install systemd yet. When i try to upgrade kde-plasma-desktop, apt doesn't let me do it.

For some reason "libpam-systemd : Depends: systemd (= 215-17+deb8u1) but it is not installable"

Installing systemd-shim doesn't work. Libpam-systemd package site gives impression that you would be able to use systemd or systemd-shim.

Tried looking through changelog, but it didn't really give any hint.

At 215-6 there are just
Code: Select allSwitch libpam-systemd dependencies to prefer systemd-shim over
systemd-sysv, to implement the CTTE decision #746578. This is a no-op on
systems which already have systemd-sysv installed, but will prevent
installing that on upgrades. (Closes: #769747)
Version of libpam-systemd that would be installed is "Candidate: 215-17+deb8u1"

Thought there was a way to select individual packages and add them to the installation.
