General :: Samba Not Showing Authentication Errors?
Jun 22, 2011
I changed the password on my samba server and now I cannot mount the share anymore from my Windows 7 box. The logs shows no errors whatsoever about authentication, is that normal? I remember from a long time ago that I never saw samba do that and it has made troubleshooting very difficult.
I changed the password with the smbpasswd wanuser command the samba version is 3.2.5
When I crank up the log level, samba shows lots and lots of totally irrelevant messages like connected and disconnected, but not why it got disconnected. On the Windows 7 machine, I get an error that the user and password is not correct. Why does Samba not report it?
I am running Valgrind on my program. It shows me two errors but mentions only addresses against them and not actual code even on a debug build.
The output is
==23002== Memcheck, a memory error detector. ==23002== Copyright (C) 2002-2005, and GNU GPL'd, by Julian Seward et al. ==23002== Using LibVEX rev 1575, a library for dynamic binary translation.

WHat should i do. How can i delete the files which are on receiver but not on main server
I have a Debian 5.0 system, fresh install, updated with aptitude. Now i'm using vmware to test my system, but the 'real' system, is a small network with around 30 workstations connected in a cisco switch + router. So i test the configuration at home, and when it's working and done, i will copy it to the real network, because i don't want to mess it up
So i installed the newest samba to act as a PDC. You can read my configuration in the following lines:
Global Settings
Share Definitions
I added root with 'smbpasswd -a root' command. When I try to connect to the domain with a Windows XP, it says: ' The username cannot be found '
I h ave a samba server which authenticate with MS AD, and this is working fine with XP and etc. But recently we have bought some pc's with Windows7 and when I try to access this share through Windos7
I am getting this error:
Is there any special thing that I need to do on client (windows7) side or server side for this to work?
My systems details: OS - Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5 (Tikanga) Kernel - Linux server 2.6.18-8.el5 #1 SMP Fri Jan 26 14:15:21 EST 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Samba - samba-3.0.23c-2
We have a Debian Linux Server with Samba setup. It connects to our lab computers each night to pull new data over. It's worked great for several years. Over the last month or two it has randomly been getting Samba errors (13663, 13668, 13673, 13683, 13693, etc). I don't know if those numbers mean anything because they are all different. Usually after rebooting it would be fixed, but it seems to be getting more frequent.
I have a samba file server that has Windows XP machines connecting to it. Fairly regularly, I get messages such as the following. Are these anything to worry about? What do they mean? Nobody ever has problems with disconnecting or losing their mapped drive or their desktop shortcut not working.
Code: Nov 15 15:37:21 servername smbd[27516]: [2010/11/15 15:37:21, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(384) Nov 15 15:37:21 servername smbd[27516]: read_socket_data: recv failure for 4. Error = No route to host
I am new to to dovecot and would like some help, so please be kind.I have one user that can send mail but not read it either by pop3 or imap.I am running Dovecot 2.0.11 on Fedora 14.
I have debian 4.0 installed for my apache web server (for some reason I did not require PHP all these days...). Now, I wanted to install PHP5 on the server. But I get http errors. When I run apt-get update I get the following error0% [Connecting to security.debian.org] later it displays[URL]The same happens when I try to install PHP5What could be the reason... should I fix sources.list?
Ive been using fedora 11 fora few months now and suddenly today after I booted up fedora network authentication(the little icon that lets me choose wifi networks) isnt showing up in the upper right hand corner which isnt that big of a problem but the fact that its on start up applications and its not wondering is what Im wondering about but on top of that my internet doesnt work at all.It will work for a little bit after boot then die and when I go to network authentication and network manager no wifi networks show up and I have about 5 around my house not including my own which is also what ive been wondering.
In KDE I have no System Notifications, Kaffiene, Amarok2, Amarok and Xine immediately exit when opened without an error. If I try to open the System Settings/Multimedia or System Settings/Notifications control panels they also exit without an error. I have audio in other applications, MPlayer, Skype, VLC, Songbird, etc., as well as from the Konsole. I've tested Konsole audio using the published guidelines in the Audio HowTo, 'speaker-test' works fine for all users. In Yast2 I can configure and test the audio card without errors, but I am not able to get USB headphones working. I have been through the 'Check your multimedia problem in ten steps'. There are no errors or missing dependencies showing up. I've booted from the 11.2 Live CD and everything worked fine including KDE Notifications and application audio. I've tried deleting my .kde4 profile, this didn't fix the problem, and application and control panel behaviour remained the same with a clean profile.
On this moment i configure a testenvironment with 1 Microsoft active directory server and 1 Opensuse 11 samba filesharing server. But i have a issue. The samba server is add to the domain and the servers can communicate with eachother. I can login to the domain on the samba server and the LDAP settings tab on yast2 samba configuration tool tell me that samba and the MS LDAP server can communicate with eachother. I can see the shares on the samba server but i can't autenticate myself. When i whant to logon than see i always "domain: domainname.local" and "access denied". My question is now how can i give the MS administrator account rights to view the shares and configure the rights for the other users.Samba config file
I have a samba server for company file shares but we do not use domain services or active directory service. Each workstation is its own standalone system. (And we want to keep it this way.) I would like to have some centralized authentication though, and it looks like Kerberos will provide that. After a lot of searching though, I can't find any instructions for setting up samba to authenticate users using kerberos without an ADS (active directory service) or domain. Is this possible?
Install and configure Samba as a primary domain controller with LDAP on Linux.i setup it step by step following article without error until step 10.i want to join windows client when press user name and password for domain then display message:The following error occurred attempting to join the domain BIGTIME: The network path was not found.
I have the following version of centos, kerbose and samba (Samba version 3.0.33-3.29.el5_5.1, krb5-libs-1.6.1-36.el5_5.5 , krb5-workstation-1.6.1-36.el5_5.5 , centos-release-5-5.el5.centos) i have configured it and qhw i givit give me the following error Failed to set password for machine account NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) Failed to join domain: Access denied
I've been trying to set up my printer that I'm sharing through a desktop running Windows 7 and am having trouble getting the authentication details to stay saved, or even work, for that matter.
No matter whether or not I tell the New Printer program to remember my authentication details, it doesn't. If I tell it to prompt me if it needs details, I get no prompt. So, in order for me to print a document, I have to tell it to print, then go into the print queue and authenticate it from there.
1. IIs there a way, either manually or through GUI, to either save my authentication details or just have it prompt me upon printing to save me from going into the print queue?
2. This isn't exactly on-topic, but it came up while I tried to set up the printer. Has anyone else had their SMB URI come up incorrectly with the spaces incorrectly rendered as "20" instead of "%20:?
A time ago I've been trying to implement a PDC linux server with Samba and Openldap for centralized authentication for windows and linux clients, but I can NOT get it. So I read somewhere that there is another option called Directory Server and maybe that is possible to do. According to your experience do you recommend any 'how to' or 'tutorial' that will permit implement a PDC server for authenticating and sharing files and printers for windows and linux clients?
Our system setup: windows server domain controller 2008 We are installed sambain Ubuntu 11.04, with ads authentication using winbind,i can able to give the access restriction from Linux for windows ADS User for linux samba share folderall are working fine from Linux,i want give the access fro domain user from MS -windows , what is the file permission owner ,etc, any one try this concept please give me a any document any example
These message have started appearing the system logs </var/log/messages and /var/log/warn> since Mar 2, 2011. They seem to occur about every 13 minutes (780 seconds). What could it mean? Is it serious?

I added my linux server to a windows AD using winbind / samba. Everything worked just fine. After changing the OS to Debian lenny x64 I get a "segmentation fault" when trying to change user passwords. I am using the exact same configuration, on my 32 bit Server everything works.
debian:~# passwd <user> sgmentation fault tail /var/log/syslog: kernel: [689689.005934] passwd[11209]: segfault at 0 ip b7b84418 sp bfc37fc0 error 4 in pam_winbind.so[b7b7e000+b000] Debian Lenny 5.0
I've been working for hours with Samba on Ubuntu Server 9.10 (Samba version 3.4.0), trying to get it setup simply as a fileserver that performs authentication to an NT 4 server (yes, I know, old and out of date). After much struggling, I finally realized that my configuration *was* working when the clients connecting (from XP, and Win2k clients, mostly) were actually joined to the domain (where the PDC is the NT 4 Server) and logged into the domain. For various reasons, many of the Windows clients at this location don't actually log into the domain, even though they have login/passwords that are valid users on the domain and they'll typically have some drives mapped to the PDC.
By the way, I have this working on another Linux box running Samba 3.0.28, so I'm sure it's possible, I'm just lost as to how to do it.I can provide plenty more information if it would help diagnose the situation. Does anyone have an idea of how I can get this to work? I'm sure it's possible, since the exact scenario worked in a recent version of Samba.
Making a Samba Server with LDAP authentication. Will post as I go along. Found these sources, anything/hiccups I should know before jumping in? Figure would follow the official documentation then check the others for comparative errors.
I have installed Samba 1.2.63-0Ubuntu4 (system-config-samba) on Ubuntu 10.04, and it has been working without any issues for a few months now, but now the username/password authentication does not work anymore and I can't figure out why
I have tried changing username/password(thinking maybe i forgot the correct credentials) and the new username/pass does not work either.
I have also tried "sudo service smbd restart" in terminal to restart samba but this does not work either
I can still see visible shares when browsing server via "network neighborhood" on XP,,, and can access the shares that do NOT require authentication
username/password are made up of standard characters as well
I have been able to accomplish my goal of creating an AD-like authentication using LDAP,SAMBA and LAM. From what I have seen you can have this type of setup but it doesn't allow the passing of group policies to the desktops of the users.
So far I've been able to get Samba to connect to the my WORKGROUP and I can see my Vista PC as well as my 3 hdd's but when I try and open the folder, any folder, C$; D$; or E$ I'm confronted with a user name and
password prompt. No user name or password combination that's associated with either machine, openSUSE or Vista will grant me access. Why am I seeing this prompt and what I would really like to know is can it be
disabled all together? Otherwise, what user name and password does Suse want? Do I need to tell Suse in a terminal a user name and password?
I have Windows 2008R2 Server acting as Domain Controller for Windows7/XP clients. and CentOS 5.3 Installed configured as Samba Server, I want to make it as ADS member server so any user to login to any machine, and be able to access their Samba share.
I have setup a samba Active Directory PDC to essentially eliminate the cost of using a Windows PDC. There are other reasons but I won't go into those now.
So everything works fine apart from a couple of things that are bugs in samba until 4.2 which isn't stable yet on debian (so I read).
The one thing that doesn't work is users trying to change their passwords. I can change them from either the PDC or through Windows users and groups. If a user tries to change it they will get the message:
"Mutual Authentication Failed. The server's password is out of date at the domain controller".
I provisioned the domain using samba-tool domain provision, i have configured kerberos and users can log in fine....it is simply changing passwords that are the issue. I am not sure if this is a samba config issue or where it is. I would hate to have to fall back to a Windows PDC.
Below is my samba config, the [domain] is of course an actual domain on the server.
Samba Config:
# Global parameters [global] workgroup = [domain short] realm =[domain] netbios name = BILBO server role = active directory domain controller
