View 4 Replies View RelatedI cannot get an install past looking for CD on any of the iso's I've tried. I have burned many iso's of other distributions onto a USB Stick and installed them so easily. Yet when it comes to Debian it is always a no go with me.
I think that Debian being up with the times would or should know most people that burn iso's just use an USB Stick it is easier and convenient. Therefore, they'd write the scripts to use them too without the "iso" thinking it is an CD/DVD that it is needing CD / DVD drivers to finish an install else abort.
I have recently installed Linux Mint 10 on my laptop. When I look at the Device Manager in Windows 7, it says I have an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. Right now, I am unable to connect to wifi with Linux. What drivers am I able to install, and how would I install them?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to build a bootable USB stick using Code: Select alldd if=~/Desktop/linux/debian-8.0.0-i386-xfce-CD-1.img of=/dev/disk1 bs=1m as mentioned here: URL... but this does not work on my MacBook 3.1, late 2007 model (yes, I am using rEFIt and my CD drive is dead). The error message upon trying to boot from the USB stick using rEFIt says something like 'unable to load bootia32.efi'.
The workaround: I took the "bootX64.efi" from here:URL... on the USB drive and renamed it as "boot.efi".I copied the "debian-8.0.0-i386-xfce-CD-1.iso" to "/efi/boot" on the USB drive and renamed it as "boot.iso".So now my USB stick has 2 files only: "/efi/boot/boot.efi" and "/efi/boot/boot.iso" and nothing else.Now I was able to boot from the USB stick get into a GRUB prompt.

The installer starts fine and I choose my locale, keyboard etc. until it starts to scan for the CD drive and I face...The error message says that a CD was not found (as expected).I fired up the shell offered by the installer and mounted the USB stick to "/mnt/usb" like this:

It works and I can see my ISO file in "/mnt/usb/efi/boot/boot.iso".I tried to mount the ISO image to "/dev/cdrom":

waited for a while and killed (control + c) the process and found that my "/dev" folder has been flooded with files named like the string "loop" followed by some digits (loop1245, loop8766 etc.).Can the Debian installer be somehow tricked into believing that the ISO file on the USB stick is the mounted CD?
I am using a thinkpad R61 and wireless is okay a livecd. Installed ubuntu 8.10 onto a 8Gb thumbdrive and the wireless is still working perfectly. Hoping to make this thumbdrive be truely portable to any laptop, I started download more wireless drivers (e.g. for rt2570, rt73, broadcom, atheros drivers etc) After installing all those wireless drivers, rebooted and noticed that ubuntu does not activate my wireless at all. (the wireless led on my thinkpad does not light up).

I want to burn the netinstall iso and also use the rest (partition the card) as storage for the camera if it can be done.

1.) Compiling a driver from the source code, but they do not give any instructions and I am lost on how to do that.
2.) Copying the firmware files directly to the lib/firmware folders. I did that but when I ran sudo ./wlan0up and sudo .wlan0down, but everything I do results in a "Could not get interface for wlan0"

And the kernel using which I downloaded, when shows up GUI, looks like a Safe Mode of Windows. So I boot the kernel that it downloaded. And there the problem is that in Network Manager applet, it doesn't show me the wireless connections. It doesn't even show the Enable Wireless checkbox upon right clicking it. How to get it back?

I have a wireless PCMCIA card.The model of the wireless card is NL-2511CD EXT2(ETSI).When I insert that card to the PCMCIA slot a window pops up and ask for a WEP key. My wireless router is configured with WPA but above pop-up has no WPA option. I suspect my fedora installation does not have the necessary driver for my wireless card.I want to install that driver. I can transfer that file to the machine via thumb drive since it has no network connection yet. How do I install this? Please refer below images as I'm still a newbie at linux.

I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix for my new laptop. I've tried at great length to install the correct drivers to get my wireless up and running. I'm currently trying to install the Broadcom driver for my 802.11g wireless card. I have downloaded the headers and tools for ubuntu and am proceeding with the instructions given on [URL].
But when I get to these steps I come unstuck

I can make the directory and open it but when it comes to the third step I get a message saying that there is no such file or directory.
I have a old mac G4 and I just recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on it. It doesn't recognize my wireless adapter at all so I get no wireless on the computer. I've never used any linux distribution in my life so I don't have any idea how to install drivers for it.

I know that there is a "mode-switch" package that needs to be installed but this is not available on the down load package list for Debian. i can find this & also instructions if possible on how to get this working on my Lenny system .
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pc as a duel boot, On the computer I use a belkin surf and share n speed controller to connect wireless ( pc doesn't have a wireless connection) I have found the correct driver RLT8192SU from realtek and unzipped it and moved the contents to a flash drive. The problem is I am a total noob to Linux based systems and i have no ideal how to install the contents, there is a read me file but it makes no sense to me and i have absolutely no clue how to install the driver so i have no internet. Is there an easier way to install or step by step instructions?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two monitors, a primary crt which I usually run at 100-160hz depending on the resolution, and a secondary lcd which I run at 144hz. I can't set either to anything above 60hz or any respectable resolution.
I'm running debian 8 with gnome. Apparently I can't use propietary drivers with gnome because it isn't supported and I have to use the open source ones. So I used this website as a guide to install drivers: [URL] ....
I tried:
1. Code: Select all# Debian 8 "Jessie"
deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
Which gave me nothing. First line didn't do anything at all, second one didn't work because 'deb' isn't a valid command.
2. Code: Select all# apt-get update
Worked as per usual.
3. Code: Select all# apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-video-ati
Only one installed, and that was xserver.The other ones failed (werent found or something?). Anyway as per instructions i rebooted and ofcourse nothing happened. I am pretty sure since step 1 was probably meant to add to the repository, step 3 wasnt able to complete.
But my concerns are...
1. How am I meant to do step 1 if it isn't a real command
2. Should I (or can I) change to something other than gnome, because I don't think its worth missing out on propietary drivers just to use gnome.

Another thing I don't know if I installed correctly are the nVidia drivers. I think I installed them succesfully, because my graphics card is now quiet (when the drivers are not installed, it sounds like a nuke) and I have the nVidia settings installed, but... when I try to modify the resolution in Preferences/Monitor, I see "Unknown monitor" and "50hz refresh rate". My TV suports 75hz and when I installed Debian I had it at 75, but after installing the nVidia drivers, everything gone wrong.
I tried to update the xorg.conf with nVidia-settings, and now it says my monitor is at 75hz and it's a Phillips, but I still see Unknow monitor and 50Hz at Preferences/Monitor. Why does this happens? Also, my integrated sound card doesn't work. When I try to open a MP3 file, It opens correctly, but my speakers don't work. And the last thing is... Compiz doesn't work! Well, nothing about Desktop Effects work. I also don't know where should I set up those Desktop Effects (I know how in Ubuntu, but in Debian...).
I just built myself a new 64bit computer, but I'm having a little trouble getting it going. At first I put windows 7 on it, but it requires 1gb of RAM just to run it's basic programs, and it's all bogged down with all these useless programs, and when I tried to turn off some programs to make it faster, half my stuff stopped working all together, because they required all these programs just to run other programs, it's just absolutely ridiculous.
So I looked into Linux, and after asking around a bit, I installed Debian. It's exactly what I want in an operating system, completely customizable, but I guess I've been spoiled by microsoft and I'm not that good with all the command lines and configuring the kernel.
Righty now I'm trying to get my video card going, but I can't even figure out how to get the drivers installed. I went to amd.com and got the drivers, but when I try to just put them in the bin, but it keeps telling me I don't have administrator priveleges, but I do. Then I tried following this manual wiki.debian.org/Manual-Howto#Atibinarydriver]Manual-Howto - Debian Wiki , but I got stuck at the part where it tells me to copy and edit my xorg.config. When I go to copy, it tells me the directory doesn't exist, but it does. And when I go to edit the xorg.config, it tells me I don't have priveleges again.
So is there any easy way to get my video card installed, or do I really have to create this new kernel and go through this whole long process? My motherboard has hybrid crossfire technology, am I able to use that with debian?

I'm using the liqorix kernel and have been updating when new versions become available. However, every time I install a new version and restart, I have to re-install my video drivers. I don't think this is normal, but I could be wrong, I'm basing my past experience on updating Ubuntu kernels. So is this normal? Is there a way I can prevent myself from having to re-install my video drivers every time I update my kernel?

I'm still getting used to the system. I've been able to install a couple of packages like Disk Manager and Firefox, and was able to mount my ntfs drive. I've only learned some basic terminal commands, but I'm managing ok so far. That is until I looked into what was involved in installing the video drivers I need for my Nvidia 8400 GS card. (ouch!) I'm trying to follow the guide here: [URL] but I've run into a snag in the 'Overview' part: "0. Make sure APT has non-free and contrib sources (consult the sources.list(5) man page for help on doing this) " The link provided [URL] is dead. With only a basic understanding (next to none) of what the sources.list is for, I'm unsure how to fulfill step 0.
